Coughlin is coming back.

SanFranGiantsFan : 12/7/2014 2:32 pm
He didn't lose this team after last week's disaster. If he did, we would be playing like Tennessee. And John Mara loves Coughlin. We all know that. He was Wellington's last hire. There's the emotional pull. My guess...Fewell and Quinn gone. Major shakeups in front office. But TC and Resee survive.

Thoughts?

But it has nothing to do with this game.

If decisions were being made with this game in mind, Fewell would probably keep his job. Won't work that way.

Yep. Francesa echoed this statement for some time.

Sean : 12/7/2014 2:41 pm : link
I like the potential of the offense with McAdoo. The NFL is always a matter of a few bounces, and the Giants haven't won any close games this year. With a few more bounces going there way, they could be 7-5 (Arizona, SF, Dallas at home, Jax). And before you bash me for that, I could say just as well the 2011 team could have been 5-11.

They need to bring in a lot of talent, but the idea that this team is 3-4 years away is absurd.

The record is indicative of what we have a team devoid of talent...which is not Coughlin fault for the talent or the shitty play...how can any fair minded person blame Coughlin for the bone head interception that Eli just threw, or Donnells bone head fumble last week, or sacks allowed by scrubs on the OL like Charles Brown??

Bottom line Giants are losing this season because of the shitty play of players and lousy talent base....and if Coughlin were not there...irrespective of the coach they would still suck...I see a team that plays hard week after week despite the record...based on that and the past track record,,,,Coughlin needs to be retained...and if it were me...I would offer him an extension of 3-4 years....hope management see it the same way....

So because we beat the Titans, he should stay. Excellent logic.

This team plays hard week after week? And the past track record? You mean missing the playoffs 5 out of the last 6 years?
And the musical chairs of coordinators would continue...

Really? so they decided before to day, did they, when there was still a quarter of the season left? In your infinite wisdom ( or complete lack of any) at what point in the season are coaching decisions made? Halfway in? after 2.3 of the games are played? or do you think we should decide that after the first quarter of the season? Hey, why not pick the bye week, or better yet the week after.

They will make their decisions at seasons end like they always do, not at some fucking arbitrary point in the season.

More like they're more committed to TC than the franchise itself. Ironic how they're as similarly stubbornly loyal to a coach, who displays the same flaw towards veteran players.
Think the Giant organization
TMS : 12/7/2014 4:40 pm : link
is smart enough to know that Coughlin (like Parcells and Belichek) is a very special football guy. One you should keep in your organization in some capacity as long as he still wants to be involved in this game. They do not come along that often. Still need help in the talent evaluation area. Reese has to get more involved (more than just the first round) or replace this idiot Ross. Coughlin has to replace some of his ACs like Fewell and Quinn who are over their heads.

Second, winning a SB doesn't give you a pass for, 6 and 7 game losing streaks, and no playoffs in 5 of last 6 years....

I don't care how bad the Titans are. If a team has mentally checked out, they don't go on the road and win a game 36-7. The best case scenario would see us a winning a 19-17 rock fight-type game.

That said, Coughlin still has time to lose the team and get himself canned, but if the season ended today, he'd keep his job.

Unless the team rebounds in a big way with Coughlin calling the shots in 2015. Something this team has done numerous times.

This team wasn't winning jack shit the last two years with the way the lines played. Maybe it's time to move on from coughlin but I don't know if things would be better if another coach was in his place this very moment.

I really don't like this guy as a person, but we should look at Rex Ryan to replace Fewel if he is let go by NY. The only problem is we will likely have to change to a 3-4. IMO, our defense is not that far away from switching to a 3-4.

I second that....Coughln is doing the best he can with the cards he was dealt...after poor drafts (not including the last 2 which appear to be outstanding), and unfortunate bad luck with players like David Wilson, Clint Sintum, Terrell Thomas, Kenny Philips, Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks.

For those clamoring for a new coach....can anyone honestly say that if Coughlin were fired last year...and we had a different coach... itwould have made a difference??

How can any team win consistently with 19 players on IR and the likes of Charles Brown and John Jerry blocking for your two time Super Bowl winning QB?

I don't think that if Vince Lombardi was coaching it would not have made a rats asszs!!

I do want Coughln & Reece back...but I think we need major changes in the scouting department...but Perry Fewel despite today's win has to go...and possible Marc Ross

My only question would be - what do you do if the team repeats this nonsense next year? Do you can everyone? Do you can the coaches and let Reese pick a replacement?

You'd think it'd be cause to dismiss everyone, but how would you know if the FO was to blame if you never gave them a shot with a different HC?

When TC wasn't fired after last year, did ANYONE realistically
baadbill : 12/7/2014 9:20 pm : link
believe that the 2013 Giants could be fixed in one year's time? There was ZERO talent on the 2013 Giants - way too little to expect all the holes to be upgraded in one year's time.

So, to fire TC now, just one year after the mess of 2013 would tell me that Mara (or your) don't know football and expected TC to somehow "fix" the shitpile that was 2013 in one year. How idiotic is that?

Of course, realistically, it isn't until 2016 that the Giants have a shot at the trophy again. Gimme three straight years with a top 10 draft pick - a solid coach and QB - and now I'm expecting a team that can complete. Three years folks. 2013 is year one. 2014 is year two. 2015 is year three.

2016 is TC and Eli's next shot at the SB.

But can them both (as many on BBI have cryed for) and there isn't a chance in hell the Giants are going to the SB in 2016 or any time shortly thereafter.

I'm not a Coughlin lover by any stretch of the imagination. I think he's a good coach & the man has the rings to back that up. All I'm saying is that Mara wants to bring him back & will find any reason to bring him back. And if the team had quit on him, I don't think it gives Mara enough cover to retain him. The team clearly hasn't quit. They're good-thank you Jerry Reese-but they are still competing.
Truth be told
blueblood'11 : 12/8/2014 7:25 am : link
Through all the ups and downs this team has endured over the Coughlin years I can only remember one or two times this team did not play hard despite the result and that to me is a testament to him as the leader of this team.

That is not an endorsement for him to remain. Just a fact. So that tells me he has not lost the players. If he is retained I have no problem although I believe a change may be the way to go. But if he does stay and does not replace Fewell I will be extremely disappointed.

Even though the offense has struggled I believe this defense under Fewell has never been a feared unit with the exception of that six game stretch in 2011 when the won the Super Bowl. Other then that he is constantly outwitted by opposing OC's. Spags is the popular choice. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

what the Giants "should" do. I'm not much into trying to play the role of armchair GM or owner. It will be interesting to see what happens though. If I had to bet, I'd bet that Mara will not want to fire TC, but we'll find out soon enough.
Special? Team
Fpbflppt : 12/8/2014 11:01 am : link
If the players on special teams are the ones that couldn't win a starting job, and since when our starters went down due to injury and their replacements weren't very good, it'd stand to reason that special teams wouldn't be very good.

In Parcells's time, special team players included ... starters.

think whether he comes back or not depends whether they see another candidate that will make the Giants significantly better for the next five years, accounting for potential teething/growing pains with a new system and way of doing things. while encouraging resiliency is a factor you don't just base it on how hard the team fights until the end of the season. that said, they won't fire coughlin just to bring in a re-tread like a mooch or gruden.
Here's what's going to happen:
Britt in VA : 12/8/2014 11:13 am : link

1. Coughlin is coming back.
2. Fewell will be let go.
3. Eli will be extended.

Those three things are stone cold locks.

Coughlin is only three years removed from his most recent one, and seven years removed from his other one. It's not a totally fair comparison.

It's not a fair comparison for many reasons, but Shula also only had 1 losing season in his final 10 years coaching Miami, and mixed in playoff wins.

Coughlin
bwalker_51 : 12/8/2014 12:27 pm : link
He needs to go. Despite finally winning a game since OCT 5th the team hasn't beaten a team with a winning record this season. For a man who preaches "finishing" this team cant even finish their lunch. Perry and Quinn have to go, if Tom stays its because they don't want to stick Eli with a new head coach. I read yesterday Tisch says change is coming so we'll have to wait and see.
He may or may not.
Randy in CT : 12/8/2014 12:31 pm : link
But boy, do I hate declarations like this...
The Titans are terrible,
giantgiantfan : 12/8/2014 1:38 pm : link
let's see how we close out the season against a terrible Redskins team, a mediocre Rams team (which may be a stretch), and a playoff contender. Very reasonable to watch us go 1-2 to close out, 5-11 record....

With all the half time adjustments TC made allowing us to come back in the 2nd half and win games, how can he be fired? This topic is the biggest joke.

If tc is back, then fewell as well. One he's tc's guy, two not going to be forced out by mara like kg was last year. Not two years in a row imo
I know that typically...
Dan in the Springs : 12/8/2014 2:04 pm : link
when the HC is retained the GM is as well, but wondering if just because TC might prove to be the best HC for us right now whether that automatically means JR is the best GM.

I actually really like Reese. I feel like he gambled and lost with a lot of picks during a time when we were a talented team, and the subsequent aging has really hurt us.

Having said that, I do know that the fans will want change and I'm wondering if there is a way that JR could be the sacrificial lamb that keeps Coughlin running things on the field.
Some of you must realize that Fewell and Quinn are TC hires
Bob in Newburgh : 12/8/2014 2:27 pm : link
They suck. The man who hired, and retained, them contrary to all logic and evidence must also suck since he is basically an Executive Head Coach whose job is to hire and supervise qualified subordinates.

In the here and now, TC might rise to the level of a mediocrity as an HC.

I would hope for more.

You guys are more committed to TC than your girlfriends. What more has to happen, before a change is needed ?

its the wisdom and experience to know not to dump a mature woman in favor of the office tart. You'll get there someday.

And it takes a mature man to know, when that mature woman is no longer getting the job done.
I'll go with the good, mature woman who has proven herself; you can take your chances with the office tart. Hope you don't get STD, but if that's the choice you want to make.

Agreed. This is a very likely outcome. Add just add #4- Quinn is gone (Promote Izzo)

That's stupid. Of course he can. But, he can also bring home SB trophies. In fact, there isn't a single coach still coaching in the NFL who has brought home more SB trophies more recently than Coughlin. But - despite his being the most successful coach in the NFL over the past 7 years, you and others think he's old, stupid, and no longer knows what he's doing.

I'm glad I have the right to just go with the facts. Tom Coughlin has won more Super Bowls than any other active NFL coach over the past 7 years. Anyone who wants to fire the coach who has most recently proven he knows what he is doing more than any other coach in the NFL is ... frankly ... a fucking idiot.
