He didn't lose this team after last week's disaster. If he did, we would be playing like Tennessee. And John Mara loves Coughlin. We all know that. He was Wellington's last hire. There's the emotional pull. My guess...Fewell and Quinn gone. Major shakeups in front office. But TC and Resee survive.
Thoughts?
If decisions were being made with this game in mind, Fewell would probably keep his job. Won't work that way.
Tenn. is SOOOOOO bad Eric, even the 2014 Giants can't lost today.
Fewell is gone, Quinn should be too.
Yep. Francesa echoed this statement for some time.
They need to bring in a lot of talent, but the idea that this team is 3-4 years away is absurd.
Let's see how NY does against a skilled, bitter division rival in week 17 in a game that will likely matter for Philly.
only things to survive the ice age-- cockroaches and quinn
Agreed.
Bottom line Giants are losing this season because of the shitty play of players and lousy talent base....and if Coughlin were not there...irrespective of the coach they would still suck...I see a team that plays hard week after week despite the record...based on that and the past track record,,,,Coughlin needs to be retained...and if it were me...I would offer him an extension of 3-4 years....hope management see it the same way....

Agree..along with staff in tact. Continuity is needed

So because we beat the Titans, he should stay. Excellent logic.
This team plays hard week after week? And the past track record? You mean missing the playoffs 5 out of the last 6 years?
Rinse Repeat.
What? Was Coughlin fired after the Jaguars loss? That would be a knee-jerk reaction.

They will make their decisions at seasons end like they always do, not at some fucking arbitrary point in the season.
If we make the correct moves to shore up
the O-line and pick up a 3rd down scatback type .
Add a FA tackling machine insurance for Beason .
I think were right back in the Mix .
Think we have to keep both JPP and Rolle .
More like they're more committed to TC than the franchise itself. Ironic how they're as similarly stubbornly loyal to a coach, who displays the same flaw towards veteran players.
Me too.
That'll be up to tc..though he backed fewell a few weeks ago

No matter how many times I see this bullshit, it still pisses me off.
Second, winning a SB doesn't give you a pass for, 6 and 7 game losing streaks, and no playoffs in 5 of last 6 years....
Whether Coughlin comes back, is still up in the air....maybe he doesn't want to be part of a rebuild......maybe he will leave if is his coaches are canned.....or, maybe he does come back.....
I don't know......only the Giant brass knows what direction they are going in....
That said, Coughlin still has time to lose the team and get himself canned, but if the season ended today, he'd keep his job.

is to have some garbage wins influence the hard choices that need to be made.
Agreed.
Unless the team rebounds in a big way with Coughlin calling the shots in 2015. Something this team has done numerous times.
This team wasn't winning jack shit the last two years with the way the lines played. Maybe it's time to move on from coughlin but I don't know if things would be better if another coach was in his place this very moment.
I really don't like this guy as a person, but we should look at Rex Ryan to replace Fewel if he is let go by NY. The only problem is we will likely have to change to a 3-4. IMO, our defense is not that far away from switching to a 3-4.
Obviously upgrades should be made
DL: JPP, Hankins, Jenkins
LB: Kennard, mcClain, Beason, Moore
Don't think this is likely to happen, but just trying to have some fun with this shitty situation.
For those clamoring for a new coach....can anyone honestly say that if Coughlin were fired last year...and we had a different coach... itwould have made a difference??
How can any team win consistently with 19 players on IR and the likes of Charles Brown and John Jerry blocking for your two time Super Bowl winning QB?
I don't think that if Vince Lombardi was coaching it would not have made a rats asszs!!
I do want Coughln & Reece back...but I think we need major changes in the scouting department...but Perry Fewel despite today's win has to go...and possible Marc Ross
Yes, 2011 we managed to go on a late run.
You denigrate players like Eli and others and say the team had no talent in order to protect the reputation of TC.
Bizarre
I like Coughlin. He is the second best HC of the Giants that I have seen, after Parcells. But every coach reaches the end. Coaches that hang on don't win again. It's just an historical fact. So why the rage at the suggestion that Coughlin is meeting the same fate as other great coaches like Shula Noll Landry and many others?
Shake up the front office and player personnel. Reese, Ross, Mara, etc. the coaches can coach and the players play for the coaches. We have almost no talent and can fill a ward at Bellevue.
Eli will be back, and should be.
Coughlin is only three years removed from his most recent one, and seven years removed from his other one. It's not a totally fair comparison.

What about those of us that are Coughlin AND Eli lovers?
They beat arguably the worst team in football, let's not go crazy
I have no doubt he puts in the time and effort. It just isn't working anymore. He has his faults and certain ones in particular he will not admit, and therefore not change.
My only question would be - what do you do if the team repeats this nonsense next year? Do you can everyone? Do you can the coaches and let Reese pick a replacement?
You'd think it'd be cause to dismiss everyone, but how would you know if the FO was to blame if you never gave them a shot with a different HC?
So, to fire TC now, just one year after the mess of 2013 would tell me that Mara (or your) don't know football and expected TC to somehow "fix" the shitpile that was 2013 in one year. How idiotic is that?
Of course, realistically, it isn't until 2016 that the Giants have a shot at the trophy again. Gimme three straight years with a top 10 draft pick - a solid coach and QB - and now I'm expecting a team that can complete. Three years folks. 2013 is year one. 2014 is year two. 2015 is year three.
2016 is TC and Eli's next shot at the SB.
But can them both (as many on BBI have cryed for) and there isn't a chance in hell the Giants are going to the SB in 2016 or any time shortly thereafter.
Quote:
but I think Coughlin has earned the right to leave when he sees fit. I'd fire Jerry Reese before I'd fire our Hall of Fame head coach.
No matter how many times I see this bullshit, it still pisses me off.
You and me both. Some guys really think TC is Vince Lombardi. He's a good coach. But he's not great! TC is slightly above average.
Quote:
Because the Giants beat the titans ?
He said clearly why. You simply fucking ignored it.
You simply fucking ignored my sarcasm.
That is not an endorsement for him to remain. Just a fact. So that tells me he has not lost the players. If he is retained I have no problem although I believe a change may be the way to go. But if he does stay and does not replace Fewell I will be extremely disappointed.
Even though the offense has struggled I believe this defense under Fewell has never been a feared unit with the exception of that six game stretch in 2011 when the won the Super Bowl. Other then that he is constantly outwitted by opposing OC's. Spags is the popular choice. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
You've got years of data to go on.
I do not believe this is the season Mara was expecting, by any stretch. I'm not sure the Giants believed they were rebuilding coming into this season as much as we here believed it. They had 7-9 wins in mind.
In Parcells's time, special team players included ... starters.
1. Coughlin is coming back.
2. Fewell will be let go.
3. Eli will be extended.
Those three things are stone cold locks.
Coughlin is only three years removed from his most recent one, and seven years removed from his other one. It's not a totally fair comparison.
It's not a fair comparison for many reasons, but Shula also only had 1 losing season in his final 10 years coaching Miami, and mixed in playoff wins.
With all the half time adjustments TC made allowing us to come back in the 2nd half and win games, how can he be fired? This topic is the biggest joke.

@SI_PeterKing RT @bigsphil: Is Tom coughlin's job safe … No.
So its a definite he'll be back then

If tc is back, then fewell as well. One he's tc's guy, two not going to be forced out by mara like kg was last year. Not two years in a row imo
I actually really like Reese. I feel like he gambled and lost with a lot of picks during a time when we were a talented team, and the subsequent aging has really hurt us.
Having said that, I do know that the fans will want change and I'm wondering if there is a way that JR could be the sacrificial lamb that keeps Coughlin running things on the field.
In the here and now, TC might rise to the level of a mediocrity as an HC.
I would hope for more.

Agreed. This is a very likely outcome. Add just add #4- Quinn is gone (Promote Izzo)

I'll go with the good, mature woman who has proven herself; you can take your chances with the office tart. Hope you don't get STD, but if that's the choice you want to make. [/quote
]i think youve stretched this analogy about as far as it can go
That's stupid. Of course he can. But, he can also bring home SB trophies. In fact, there isn't a single coach still coaching in the NFL who has brought home more SB trophies more recently than Coughlin. But - despite his being the most successful coach in the NFL over the past 7 years, you and others think he's old, stupid, and no longer knows what he's doing.
I'm glad I have the right to just go with the facts. Tom Coughlin has won more Super Bowls than any other active NFL coach over the past 7 years. Anyone who wants to fire the coach who has most recently proven he knows what he is doing more than any other coach in the NFL is ... frankly ... a fucking idiot.
