2014 NYG Draft is looking rosy

spike : 12/7/2014 9:19 pm
We all know Beckham will be a star no 1 WR in this league. Richberg has the potential to anchor our OL at center or guard for the next decade. Bromley has FINALLY been let loose and impressed with his pass rush and passion. Andre Williams had his best rushing game today and does not appear to be a bust running behind a subpar OL. Devon Kennard has reminded us what real Giants linebacking is like.

Now if Nat Berhe can at least be a reliable backup safety (or more), then Reese just hit a home run out of this draft.
Go figure. One game against the Titans changes everything.
Anakim : 12/7/2014 9:25 pm : link
Richburg went from the bench to an anchor. Bromley went from the inactive list to impressive. Williams went from a bust to a great RB and Kennard went from an unknown to a stud LB.

Thanks Titans for giving us optimism...even if it is false!
Definitely a ray of light.

We need another strong draft class this year, and this worm should start to turn. Fingers crossed.
I don't think you can say that about Richburg yet
oipolloi : 12/7/2014 9:32 pm : link
I actually think he is going to be a very good center but his performance has yet to merit his being labeled a "good pick."

OBJ, in contrast, is looking like perhaps the best pick in the draft.

Reese might also have finally struck gold with a late-round LBer. It took long enough, but this kid Kennard is the real deal. We don't know how much he will improve but we have already seen enough to know he as a damn good pick.

Williams has also shown enough to be labeled a "solid pick" in the fourth.

Bromley looking like the only Reese "reach pick." But obviously it's early.

Over grade: A

if true, and if 2013 also pans out, remember that all the holes we created by the wretched drafts from 2010 - 2012. 2009 was pretty poor as well. We had a ton of picks, and Reese blew them all except for Nicks and Beatty. And Reese didn't even want Nicks. He wanted Darius Heyward-Bey, but the Raiders, being the Raiders, overpaid for his "vertical speed." Our OL, TE, and LB situations are inexcusably bad thanks to Reese.

This team started last season 0 - 6, and had a seven game losing streak this season, including some unbelievable collapses. One win over a horrendous team changes nothing IMO. We are 4 - 9.
How do you know that?
Jupiter : 12/7/2014 10:35 pm : link
A guy who has struggled to be even a mediocre guard is going to be a star at center?

The only reason to be optimistic about that move is that Richburg is undersized at guard but may be okay size for a center.

The 2009 draft was bad for a lot of teams. I think we did well to get a star WR in the first (albeit brief) and a solid LT in the second. The 2012 draft was a killer though.
People really do live and die week to week
illmatic : 12/7/2014 11:12 pm : link
with wins and losses in the NFL. People's mood's change drastically if they win one game. A few weeks ago, Bromley was a bad pick, Richburg shouldn't have gone in round 2 and got benched, Williams was overrated and Kennard was all hype and no substance. Now some people are loving the entire draft. lol

If we're lucky, guys like Richburg and Kennard will be pretty good players. Let's not get hyped up by a good performance against a terrible team.
No optimism allowed, we forgot.
bceagle05 : 12/7/2014 11:24 pm : link
Giants have far more young talent on the roster now than they did a year ago. Beckham alone makes a huge difference when rebuilding - he's the type whose presence makes others better. We need a guard and a #2 threat either at WR or TE, and we'll be in pretty good shape on offense.

The defense? Ugh. Prince, DRC, Hankins and Kennard, and who knows what else. Lot of work to do there.

im not sold on richburg, but really OL guys can take a few seasons before their impact is fully realized.

Andre Williams is a fantastic back. Runs with authority and reminds me of Chris ivory's/Eddie lacy power with a nice sudden speed burst like David Wilson. He accelerates to his max speed quickly.

I also like kennard. He's a strict OLB who can play in line on pressure packages on third and long situations to dictate 1on1 matchups. It will be interesting to see if he can play in space next preseason, or if he has any kind of long range speed to cover TEs. Again perfect pick get a player who can contribute immediately in situational football.

Bromley's grade is incomplete, but it worries me we saw Kuhn play before he did. Kuhn is a bubble player next year for sure.

ODB is , ODB.

Looks like we got a solid haul of players who all have very high floors-- you need guys who are simply middle of the road, league average players to fill out your roster. These are the guys who your stars elevate.
OBJ

At least now the Zach Martin stuff will end, hopefully.

Still, the 2009 draft was awful, that stupid Sintim pick..
The only guy we can hang our hat on as a starter is Beckham.
Ira : 12/8/2014 5:48 am : link
But Richburg and Kennard look like they may become reliable starters. That will make three in one draft. Bromley may turn into a fourth, but it's early to say with him. Williams and Behre should be decent backups. All in all this is at least a good draft with the potential to be more.

We have to draft more like 2014 going forward (not every draft is gonna be as good sure) than '10 to '12 otherwise we aren't going to see the playoffs anytime soon.
Reese is a master at filling with...

Around last March when Reese

starter FA shopping, I figured this was a 2 year re-build only because of the huge # of holes we had to fill (for whatever reason). I didn't think it possible it could be done in 1 year.

They almost had it going by game #5 but the false security most of us had in the new Oline got exposed for what it is. Shit. Poo-poo ca-ca.

You fix that Oline, improve the Dline and have better luck with injuries, there's no reason the Giants won't win the NFC East in 2015.

The 2014 draft class is getting playing time
Rjanyg : 12/8/2014 8:07 am : link
Which is a good and bad thing. If we didn't have all the injuries there is good chance many of these guys would only be special teamers or inactive. The fact they are playing decent is a definite plus. OBJ is a star, Williams is developing nicely, Richburg will be our Center next year, we can only hope Bromley is in the DT rotation early next season. My favorite player from the draft is Kennard. The kid looks the part, seems to be around the ball, can tackle and is now making plays. Is it possible Reese actually his on a mid round LB?
My favorite is

OBJ, I know it's a weird thing to say
Every year we hear this
LauderdaleMatty : 12/8/2014 8:34 am : link
Other than OBJ who looks like a star the rest of the draft is still very questionable.

The Titans will be picking In the top 3 for a reason.
Let's not get carried away.
Victor in CT : 12/8/2014 8:43 am : link
Beckham looks like a star in the making but it's only been 8 games.

Everybody else is subject until proven otherwise.
Sorry Victor from CT
geelabee : 12/8/2014 9:27 am : link
But Kinnard just jumps off the screen and looks like a very good player already..,

I like him too. But he has only played a few games and has had an injury history here and at USC. Lets hope he stays healthy. It's nice having an active LB for a change
It just

shows that one good draft wasn't enough to rebuild this roster. We simply didn't have the depth/talent to sustain the injuries that we took this year. I think we can be relevant again in 2015 with another good draft/FA round.
I still do not understand why we drafted Berhe and Bennett Jackson
Bobby Epps : 12/8/2014 11:53 am : link
as DBs because we had so many DBs on the roster as a result of all the vet FA signings.

We had so many other problem areas to fix: TE, OL etc.

I'm not saying who we should have drafted instead but Zach Fulton, drafted IMMEDIATELY after Jackson, would have a good addition to the OL.
They're contributing and then some, cause for optimism
JonC : 12/8/2014 11:56 am : link
tempered by two very poor opponents the past two weeks. Let's see them finish strong and give the front office a reason to start moving on from some aging vets who look closer to done.
It is always said on this board it takes several years
Reb8thVA : 12/8/2014 12:38 pm : link
before you can objectively condemn a draft a bust. Why are we so quicjk to anoint it a success? These are still a few incompletes.
The only thing the remainder of this season is about is learning more
Tom in NY : 12/8/2014 1:02 pm : link
about the young players.

It was great to see all the young guys on the field, and contributing!

The Titans, at least yesterday's version, may very well be the worst team in the league, so a good starting point.

Each of the following weeks (Wash-STL- Phila) represents and increasing level of talent as opponents. Let's see how the young guys perform each week, and then Giants can game plan their off-season from there.

I am encouraged by what I saw from Moore, Bromley, Kennard, Richburg, Williams, Harris, and of course OBj yesterday. I hope we can see more from Berhe, Harris, and Washington this coming Sunday.

If the Giants want to get back to winning the division and playoff games, these last 4 games have to give them a true barometer of where their young players stand.
our rookies look great
giantfanboy : 12/8/2014 2:54 pm : link
too bad a few of them could not get on the field because of tweaked hamstrings

i will say it over and over again
the issues with the NY Giants during the Tom Couglin era
have not been Kevin Gilbride , or Perry Fewel or Resse

it is
the NY GIANTS strength and conditioning program

It is causing our team to be depleted year after year
and causing potentially good players on this team to have their career cut short.
