Which players made you eat crow?

#10* : 12/11/2014 10:34 am
Here to eat my crow soup. I was wrong about Beckham. He was the perfect pick for this organization. I wanted a tackle but if we put ourselves in a position to draft one in the next draft I think this team could really surprise people next year. That said, they would have to solidify that defense and draft another guard but next years team could take the lid off.

Who else have we pounded the table against that turned out to be a player?

hard to come up with any draft picks because most of the classes have sucked in recent years.

In FA, I thought Jameel McClain was worse than he is. He hasn't been outstanding, but he's a legit starter.
I liked but didn't love the OBJ pick
Andy in Halifax : 12/11/2014 10:45 am : link
He just didn't blow me away in the 2 games I saw of him last year ('Bama & TAMU). Thought he was a good player, but I confess I thought Donald was better.

That's just recent history, too many plates of crow in my life to list them all here.
Ayers before he was injured...
okiegiant : 12/11/2014 10:45 am : link
He wasn't playing lights out but he was effective and showed a lot of hustle.

Would have liked to see Thurmond all year.
I don't watch much CFB so I don't normally take
jcn56 : 12/11/2014 10:46 am : link
a stance when players are drafted, but it seems that Pugh should be a guy that draws a few people here. There were plenty that were convinced Pugh'd be a huge bust, and I think he's been anything but (albeit playing dinged up on a crappy line isn't doing him any favors this season).
I wasnt mad when we drafted Hankins
gmen9892 : 12/11/2014 10:46 am : link
But not knowing who he was, I thought we could do better at the time. Needless to say, he has been excellent this year and I did not see this type of production coming from him.
In a different way, Barrett Green made me eat crow
FranknWeezer : 12/11/2014 10:57 am : link
I thought he was going to be a stud LB for years when we got him in FA from the Lions. Monumental bust.
Josh
kickerpa16 : 12/11/2014 10:59 am : link
Brown.

I thought he was going to be an easily replaceable vet, but he's been slightly above average.
I thought this guy was going to be a star
Semipro Lineman : 12/11/2014 11:00 am : link

I think many of us were excited about Green.
L.T.=Lawrence Taylor : 12/11/2014 11:04 am : link
For me it's hands down Kawika Mitchell. I had someone on the Chiefs on my fantasy team the year before we signed him, and I remember commenting constantly about how I never saw him make a big play for Kansas City, and it was a travesty the that the Giants were considering him as an answer at linebacker.
And I was just talking about this season...
okiegiant : 12/11/2014 11:05 am : link
may list of crow eating would be high as a mountain if we went back the '80.
oh if we're going by picks I loved that didnt pan out
Deej : 12/11/2014 11:06 am : link
then I have a million. William Joseph and Wheatley really come to mind. I never thought much of Hampton, and Wheatley looked amazing in college.
Semipro, is that Marvin Austin?
Greg from LI : 12/11/2014 11:09 am : link
If so, ditto for me - I thought he was going to be the steal of the draft.

Toth029 : 12/11/2014 11:14 am : link
Michael Boley was better than I expected. One of the better LB's for the team in the past ten years.

Didn't Green suffer a career ending injury in like his 2nd game and never played again? Always wondered how a guy who gets injured is a "bust". Unfortunate, sure; bad luck, absolutely; disappointing, right; but bust?
semi pro's pic
crick78 : 12/11/2014 11:19 am : link
None other than Ian Allen
Greg
Semipro Lineman : 12/11/2014 11:23 am : link
it's former offensive lineman Ian Allen. A mainstay of the Chris Bober days of the offensive line before the Snee, O'Hara, and Dielh era started.

Marvin Austin is another good one though. I thought he would be a good player as well.
Link - ( New Window )
oh, I unfortunately remember Ian Allen well
Greg from LI : 12/11/2014 11:25 am : link
Didn't remember what he looked like though
Yeah, Austin
BillT : 12/11/2014 11:27 am : link
He had some red flags but had played well in college. What was so intriguing were his measurables. His workouts were off the charts. Unbelievable numbers for a big man. Oh, well.

I remember being overjoyed that Joseph was still there for us when Buffalo didn't take him.

BLUATHRT : 12/11/2014 11:30 am : link
I talked up Sinorice Moss like no tomorrow to anyone that would listen. Thought EA moving up to get him was the best move of the draft.
Will Allen
pjcas18 : 12/11/2014 11:30 am : link
kind of made me eat crow.

that was pre-kids and I still watched college football. I thought for sure Jamar Fletcher would be the better corner and Will Allen would be garbage.

He did have feet for hands, but he was a pretty damn good cover corner and wasn't afraid to get his nose in there in the run game. William Peterson (later William James), who I had no opinion on, was even better for a short period. That should be been a good corner duo for a while.

I always liked Will Allen
Rob in NYC : 12/11/2014 11:41 am : link
he definitely had some limitations, but played corner at a reasonably high level for a decade.

Dead wrong on Wilson, loved the guy at Virginia Tech. I also though Ramses Barden would be a very useful player...not so much
LaVar Arrington
crick78 : 12/11/2014 11:45 am : link
Yeah he had the achilles, but he just want the same explosive player he had been in washington.
wasn't
crick78 : 12/11/2014 11:46 am : link

I thought Kenny Holmes would be a stud as well...
BLUATHRT : 12/11/2014 11:49 am : link
We had a run of misses trying to plug a guy on the other side of Strahan foerver.
Jamaar Taylor
Rocky369 : 12/11/2014 11:50 am : link
didn't know anything about him, but thought he and Eli would have a future together after the two 50-yarders.

Was excited to have Jayron Hosely in the mix, but meh.

Chad Jones was high on the list after we drafted him, but unfortunately didn't work out how we all wanted.
Eli
trueblueinpw : 12/11/2014 11:56 am : link
Thought Eli was all about the name. Thought Ron Dayne and Tyron Wheetly were going to be great backs.

Pretty much know now that I don't know shit about how draft picks will pan out.
Tiki
steve in ky : 12/11/2014 12:05 pm : link
When I first watched him as a rookie I never envisioned him becoming such a complete and dominant back.
the lesson with Marvin Austin
oipolloi : 12/11/2014 12:05 pm : link
is that you don't spend a second rounder on a guy with those type of red flags

Suspended his senior season for taking money. Tweets of him playing gangbanger with guns. Partying for week in DC during the semester.

When you are approaching the draft and have millions riding on your selection and you go out and do stupid scheit like Austin did, it says something

And on top of all that, he was injured.

Bradshaw is a guy who turned it around. But he was a 7th round pick. He also had infractions when he was younger not when it when it would cost him million as was the case ith Austin.

Preston Parker is another guy.

But these were both low risk moves. A second rounder on a guy with Austin's character issues is just not a good risk/reward situation.
I thought Andre Brown was not NFL roster worthy
Bino5 : 12/11/2014 12:33 pm : link
and although he's always injured his 2012 season was pretty darn good.

I still do not see Larry Donnell as an ideal starting TE, he is definitely better than I expected.

The fact that Craig Dahl was an NFL starter for a couple of years was a shocker to me.

I guess it should not have b/c he always had a big leg, but I never thought Matt Bryant would become a very good reliable kicker

I hated the Sehorn pick
Headhunter : 12/11/2014 12:43 pm : link
thought that a white CB was a disaster in the making
Craig Dahl is surprising
oipolloi : 12/11/2014 12:46 pm : link
he looked way too slow in his time with the Giants. But he has carved out a nice career for himself.
Luke Petitgout
Mike in NY : 12/11/2014 12:46 pm : link
When we rushed up to make the selection I was expecting L.J. Shelton or Aaron Gibson, two OT's who were rated at the time higher than the Giants were selecting. I remember fumbling through draft mags trying to find anything about Petitgout
JPP.
Red Dog : 12/11/2014 1:04 pm : link
Going back many years, he's the only GIANTS choice I can think of who worked out better than I thought he would.
Cruz
ANGPASS : 12/11/2014 1:10 pm : link
So i took my younger cousin to his first training camp in 2010. He is raider fan first but likes the giants as well. We all got autographs then went out to dinner. we were discussing who we got.
Me:"I got Nicks, Manningham, webster, boss, steve smith, diehl, JPP, Tuck, Mara, Gilbride"
My cousin: "i got Cruz"
Me:"Who? who the hell is cruz?"
Cousin: "he went to UMass and i am going to college there next year"
ME"he is going to get cut like, tonight. that sucks"

Then 3 tds against the jets and then 2011 happened and yea, that crow taste amazing.
Petitgout is a great call
English Alaister : 12/11/2014 1:17 pm : link
BBI had a collective meltdown. For 3 months we had talked about Shelton (lean OT type) vs Gibson (man mountain) nearly constantly and then we skipped both for a guy most of us had not heard of.

I hated the JPP selection. I saw him as a workout warrior. Happy to have been proven wrong there.

2003 I loved Joseph and Babers. Was ho hum about Osi and Diehl. Got that one wrong...but then I guess so did the scouts who took the formers before the latters.

i thought
Les in TO : 12/11/2014 1:33 pm : link
cedric jones would shut the critics up and be a legit DE for 10 years

same with kiwi, thought he would be a lot better than he was.

hated the brad daluiso signing but he was a solid kicker for us.
Coughlin...
kinard : 12/11/2014 1:50 pm : link
.... I was calling for his head after he blew a 21 point lead with 10 minutes left against the Titans in '06.

Went on to win 2 Super Bowls and shut me the fuck up.

But I'm too stupid to learn my lesson. I want a new Giants head coach in 2015. (Don't fire the guy, but nudge him upstairs to the FO).

not so much that i didnt think he was good, just that we didnt need him.

we needed him.
Greg Lasker...

thought he'd be All-Pro. Can't think of any others I missed.
Literally have never been wrong about anything.

I watched Ramses Barden make catch after catch in camp.
Marty in Albany : 12/11/2014 2:47 pm : link
I was certain that he would be a star in the NFL. He was a star for one game... against a bad defense.

you saw Beckham's succes coming ?
Shockey
Rjanyg : 12/11/2014 4:36 pm : link
I didn't want him, instead wanted Levi Brown. Ended up loving Shockey. The one I knew wouldnt be to good is Ron Dayne, wanted Sean Alexandet instead. I was right about that one.loved the OBJ pick.
I wanted Derrick Morgan over the potential of JPP.
Shockeyisthebest80 : 12/11/2014 4:54 pm : link
Even the JPP we complain about now is still better than Morgan's career apex.
Corey Webster
Hammer : 12/11/2014 5:01 pm : link
When he was benched I ran around telling anyone who would listen how much he sucked.

The rest is history.

I ended up wearing a Corey Webster Jersey for almost four years.

Oh well...
I'll go with 1 in each direction..
Mike in Long Beach : 12/11/2014 5:16 pm : link
I was wrong about Jon Beason (so far). I thought it was a great decision to resign him and I was on the verge of buying his jersey. So far that has not worked out at all.

On the other side of the coin, unfortunately, I can't think of a single player who came in here I was ho hum on that has exceeded my expectations. I wasn't a fan of the Beckham pick so that could count I suppose, but I wasn't a big critic either. I just had a small preference for a DT.

Also, I was right that cutting Will Hill was f*cking stupid. :::ducks:::
I wasn't a big fan of the Beckum pick.
RDJR : 12/11/2014 7:57 pm : link
Watch a lot of SEC football, knew he was good, but didn't think he was 12th pick worthy. Enjoy crow.

travis beckum sucks! no need to eat crow about that one
Beckham and Sinorice
NYG4246 : 12/12/2014 11:54 am : link
I was furious we didnt draft Zach Martin, I questioned beckhams size as a negative for a top pick. thought we did an ike hilliard again. To this point i have been completely wrong. thankfully so.

on the other hand I thought sinorice moss was going to be a stud in the slot and be just what we needed to give us a top recieving core with burress and toomer. i thought hed be better then santana or at least on santanas level. He just couldnt stay on the field, or get there for that matter. he flashed in a blowout of seattle once but that was it for the former hurricane. hell the guy couldnt even stay with saskatewan in the CFL, he did get a ring though.
Eli.
ed90631 : 12/13/2014 8:45 pm : link
I thought at the time the Giants obtained Eli they had more pressing needs and that Captain Dunderhead would do for a few more seasons. Eli turned out to be a once a decade pick for the Giants and I have been a fan of his since his first start.
