Why I would not bring Coughlin back

GeofromNJ : 12/11/2014 11:16 pm
For years I watched this team start out well and proceed to play themselves out of the playoffs. And each time it happened, I heard Couglin say that his players failed to finish, despite the fact that he preached "finish" ad nauseum, as if he were the brilliant coach and his players were dense for not listening to him. This year, he's gone one better, taking leads into the second half and watching his team blow it, and after the game telling us that his team failed to finish, despite the fact that he screamed it to the high heavens. In other words, once again, he's the brilliant coach and his players are dumb for not listening to him. But any a-hole coach can tell his team to finish. It's the coach's job to get his team to finish.

Coughlin also seems incapable of hiring competent assistants or firing bad ones. He hired Spagnolo in 2007 only because ownership forced to fire Tim Lewis. I also remain convinced that he hired McAdoo because ownership (Mara) told him that McAdoo's offense, unlike Gilbride's, is quick hitting and doesn't require an inept offensive line to hold their blocks for three seconds. Rather than lose his own job, Coughlin fired Gilbride and forced Gilbride to say that his wife wanted him to quit. I'm not saying McAdoo is an improvement. Merely saying that I don't think McAdoo was Coughlin's idea. As for failing to fire incompetent coaches, he refuses to replace Fewell and Quinn.

I also fault Coughlin for not telling Reese that letting Martellus Bennett walk in 2013 and bringing in Myers was a recipe for disaster. Last year's 0-6 start was proof. With Bennett, the Giants start 3-3 and finish 10-6 at a minimum. Did Coughlin not see that?

Sure, I can think of worse coaches in the league. And I'm not forgetting the two Super Bowls, but did Coughlin win them or did Spagnolo's defense (Strahan, Osi, Tuck, Kiwi, Pierce, Wilson) win in 2007 and Gilbride's offense (Bradshaw, Jacobs, Ware, Nicks, Manningham, Ballard, McKenzie, Diehl, Snee) win in 2011?

A coach who cannot get his team to play well on a consistent basis and is not able to attract competent assistants should be let go. Do I have a replacement in mind? No, I don't. Do I want "anybody but Coughlin"? Certainly not. I'm just tired of watching this team "fail to finish" and listening to Coughlin's post game analyses, telling us why his team loses (they don't finish, they turn the ball over, they miss assignments), as if he were a post-game commentator instead of the guy responsible.

The last two years we've been decimated by injuries AND
SGMen : 12/11/2014 11:22 pm : link
feeling the pinch of poor drafting.

Bennett would not have gotten us to 3-3 last year - no chance. We had a poor, injured, old OL coming out of the gates and it got worse. Coughlin RALLIED the team to 7-9.

This year, the new offense along with not having a FS cost us the first two games. We just don't have the personnel to play with the big boys. Look at our shedule and quality of teams we've played and lost to?

I want Coughlin back UNLESS there is a top college coach and proven GM that wants this job. Heck, I'm not even sure Fewell can be totally blamed for the defensive mess though He'll likely get axed.

Mainly because the team is playing hard. The fact that they are injured, and have a bad o line is not all on the head coach. We have won 2 Superbowls with a 10-6 wild card team and a 9-7 Division champ. If you think the head coach had nothing to do with those championships you are both blind and dumb.

I'm fairly certain Bennett wanted a 1 year deal so that he could get a better long-term contract the way he did.

I don't know if he would have taken a cheap multi year deal, so you can't really say that.

that ownership and some fans are using to make a case for TC and not his body of work for 10 years? Not many coaches are perfect and TC sure isn't, but he's really good at a lot of things. Team unity, motivation, fighting through adversity, teaching football. Those are great qualities in a HC and it shouldn't be overlooked. On the other side, he lacks in some areas too and sometimes a culture change is needed when things are going bad. I'm glad I'm not the one who has to make the decision.
Disagree with your reasoning
TMS : 12/12/2014 7:47 am : link
and conclusions. Coughlin is a consensus good HC and very knowledgeable football person. The best in the entire organization. He is expieriencing problems in controlling the talent that he is given to work with from the draft and FA decisions. These are the responsibilities of the GM Reese with input from Chris Mara. Coughlin makes suggestions and voices opinion but they have the final say on these moves. Coughlin's past history indicates he would not allow our OL to be neglected like it has been for one thing. He manages the product on the field but has to work with the material that he is given. This is on the other guys. True he needs a good DC to work with and he has been mistaken with Sheridan and Fewell. Bur the biggest problem is the talent.
Coughlin is the guy
aquidneck : 12/12/2014 7:55 am : link
Who put Charles Brown on the field when Pugh went down. The guy that held onto Snee and Deihl and made both starters when cooked thereby making his OL worse.

Don't give Reese all the blame for the roster when Coughlin is the guy deciding who stays, who goes and who plays.

When the team goes 8 and 8 next year and everyone is saying TC should have been fired last year I would like to hear the comments from his supporters. A number of you refer to the Super Bowl wins. They were great and TC deserves all the credit in the world, but he should be held accountable that for five out of the last six years no playoffs. In some of those years the team died at the end of the season. As a long time fan I believe TC is the best coach we have ever had but it is time to move on.

So much awesome on this board sometimes.
So many things wrong with your post but most glaring to me:
nicky43 : 12/12/2014 8:32 am : link
"I also remain convinced that he hired McAdoo because ownership (Mara) told him that McAdoo's offense, unlike Gilbride's, is quick hitting and doesn't require an inept offensive line to hold their blocks for three seconds."

At the time McAdoo was hired to be Giants OC, there was no such thing as a McAdoo offense. In fact, McAdoo was never an offensive coach prior to being hired by the Giants. And how do you know it was Mara who liked McAdoo and not TC or not Reece. And lets not forget the fact that Gilbride officially retired so anything other than that is officially just speculation.

Also, you put way too much stock in what a coach says in a press conference where he is being pressed to answer stupid questions in a public forum that does not allow him to speak his mind without publicly humiliating Reece, coaches, and players. Don't forget, TC reports to Reece (who is the idiot that is really fucking up this team) so TC does not have the freedom to talk in public about the shitty job the GM is doing.

Also, you look at the inconsistency from the perspective that the problem is the coach. Have you considered looking at in inconsistency from the perspective that TC is a great coach and maybe the level of talent is so bad that the times they do play good can be attributed to the coaches basically succeeding in squeezing blood out of a rock if only temporary? Just saying!

coughlin gone because there have been too many instances over the last few years where we have been outsmarted by opposing coaches and there has been a trend towards very sloppy play (turnovers, penalties, attention to small details).
Sick of hearing about injuries!
yungdeeks : 12/12/2014 11:33 am : link
Every single team in the NFL deals with injuries! Look at the Arizona Cardinals. They are in the toughest division in football, have had more devastating injuries than anyone and they are going to the playoffs and have 11 wins.

New England has lost several key players on defense and is still rolling towards another deep playoff run.

Aside from the injuries excuse, Coughlin is simply not getting consistent results. You cannot give him a pass forever for his 2 Super Bowls. His team has not made the playoffs in three straight seasons although we have a quarterback that is in his prime and many would consider a top 10-15 guy at his position (maybe not today but certainly after ring 2).

I'm not sitting here and saying Coughlin has the most talented roster in the league, but there are plenty of teams with good coaches that outperform their talent. We consistently do the opposite.

I'm very scared because I saw this coming (as I'm sure many of us did) where we would get crushed by all playoff contenders then win a few meaningless games against Tennessee, Washington, St. Louis and then everyone goes into the offseason feeling like we those last few games really showed us something and Coughlin deserves a second chance.

I hope the Jacksonville game showed us enough and I hope we lose to St. Louis and to Philly to end the season. This team needs to rebuild and it would be great to have a top draft pick and a new coach to start fresh. I look at what Philly did prior to last season. They were consistently strong under Andy Reid for a decade, but they saw the writing on the wall after a horrible year and knew it was time to make a change. They drafted in the top 5, got a new coach and they are going to win the division for the second straight year.
TC
Dragon : 12/12/2014 11:54 am : link
I keep hearing he is keeping the team together during the 6 and 7 game loosing streaks. That's great but good HC loose two or three games in a row some even four but they stop the bleeding before it costs the team the season. Two years in a row this team has thrown away the season with 6+ games loosing streaks. That just can't happen and then you say it was the injury bug, poor ST, poor defense, poor offense and yet not hold the HC responsible.

A good coach brings the best out of his players in the tough or tight games we loose these games not win them. We find a way to loose that's the reality of these teams and that is not acceptable.
If you replace Coughlin:
Doomster : 12/12/2014 11:58 am : link
Who do you replace him with?

Does the new HC completely wipe out the present coaching staff, with his own people, or will he be handcuffed by ownership into keeping certain coaches, as one of the prerequisites for the job?

What will his relationship be with Eli, who will be in the last season of his contract?

Does Eli want a 3rd OC in as many years? Does Eli want a new coach?

Tom coughln is a good coach.... one of the best 3 the Giants ever had.....his teams have won two SB's.....has potential to be a HOF coach, but I don't think he makes it.....

The downside is, 9 out of 11 seasons his team did not win a playoff game......for the most part this team has just been an 8-8 +/-1 team, the last few seasons.....in the last six seasons, this team has not qualified for the playoffs, 5 times, and has a record of 47-46......

Unfortunately for Coughlin teams, they are known for fast starts, and finishing poorly......they are also known for not showing up for games.....losing streaks or 6 and 7 games, the last two seasons, has been an embarrassment....

Where is Coughlin's mindset? Does he want to be part of a rebuild after this year? Will another failed season be too much for him?

Let's face it, the Coughlin era has to come to an end some time.....will delaying the inevitable be good for the team? What plan does ownership have, to bring this team just back to respectability, never mind championship runs?

This team is more than just a few players away.....a sweeping change in coaching personnel is a two edged sword...the new staff inherits what?

Either way, this team goes, this team will be a work in progress for years to come....just too many question marks....I don't have the answer.....BBI does, or so they seem......until we know what actions the ownership/front office takes, we can't even speculate.....

and jump straight to the injuries and talentless rosters of 2013 & 2014. Sad the selective memory some have. Under Coughlin we have always been inconsistent no matter the perceived talent level. As great a coach he is, some say hall of fame good, you'd think he would have a better track record than missing the playoffs five out of our last six seasons.

It's not just that we miss the playoffs, it's how we've managed to miss the playoffs. It's always a collapse of some sort. Recently it's been the long six and seven game losing streaks of '13 & '14. Prior it was the late season collapses of '08, '09, '10, & '12.

Only three division titles in eleven seasons. You have to take care of your division first. Let me remind you of the teams in our division. The Cowboys who have not made the playoffs since '09 and before that hadn't won a playoff game since the 90's. The Redskins... enough said. Which brings us to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Tom Coughlin has never been able to beat the Eagles when it matters most. Commonly games we beat Philly in are either earlier in the season are late season meaningless games when we're already eliminated. If you think about it, you know it's true.

In the past three seasons, Coughlin has shown no reason why he should be brought back or extended. Fans simply want him back on the strength of the past and fear of change.

'08 Plax shot himself and well you know the rest. Not TC's fault but I think the Giants win the SB had the mind-set remained focused and Plax played. The defensive injuries that year mounted but other teams had hurts to. We beat AZ for the SB and we beat Pittsburgh too. Plax drew double teams and made it easier for the rest of the team. Antonio Pierce's play was "off" after the incident too. Damn shame as that was TC's best team. '12 collapse was terrible. 1 more win and we may have been in. Shame. '13 and '14 are due to injuries and lack of talent drafting and UFA's. Just not all on Coughlin though it may play out that way.

But Tom Coughlin is not a savior. He may not be faulted for the final decisions in the draft but does anyone here really believe that he has not had major input into these drafts? Does anyone really believe that the Giants sign free agents without his input? Does anyone think that he has no control over who his assistants are and the gameplans? If you do, on what basis and why is he still the head coach? What exactly is his job then?

Are you kidding me? It's absolutely the head coaches fault if the mind-set of the team can't remain focused enough to finish the season strong. His best team ever, seven pro-bowlers, our running game and line were in it's prime and we collapsed. That is completely on Tom Coughlin, regardless of what happened with Plaxico. A great coach keeps his team focused. Instead we lose three of our last four, two of which were against division rivals. Then we go into the playoffs and after a bye week get embarrassed, at home, again by our division rival Eagles.

Let's see what Mr Mara and Mr Tisch

say about this.

There are too many factors between winning and losing to believe

your reasons to fire TC.
