check length of book vis-à-vis length of time in car. Some of the classics are over 20 hours long. Also look into OverDrive app for your smart phone. If you get that you can download books from your local library. Another option is Audible from amazon but that will cost you although they have a nice start up sale.
James Patterson has a bunch of detective stories about 6 to 7 hours.
Also the Harry Potter books can be fun to listen to but are very long.
Good luck
Audible gives free membership almost every other month Â
I've managed to get the entire game of thrones series from them and about 8 other books on top of that without paying a dime. Though I should state that I sorta cheated there and had a second account(my dad's) that would gift me books with the free membership. On top of that, they often have membership deals where it's $2-3/mo for 3 months. Anyhow, it all depends on what you and the mrs. like. The GoT audible books are quite good as is world war z which unlike most audiobooks, features many different voice actors.
Not sure your wife would like it, but "HERO FOUND"is a great story of a German born American citizen who escaped captivity from a Vietnam prisoner camp.
Check it out on Amazon for more info. Highly recommended !
make a 1700 mile trip twice a year.
We stop at the first Cracker Barrel on the trip and they have about 2 racks of audio tapes that can be rented and returned at another Cracker Barrel in another City. They have a pretty nice selection of books and the cost is about $4-5 for a rental. Their food is not bad and their rest rooms are clean.
I am a huge audiobook listener, and I get everything for free at the library. I either pick it up physically, or I use their online system to download the audiobooks for free (almost all libraries have these now). I will never pay for an audiobook.
The hard part of audiobooks is that you need a good book AND a good narrator. This has killed a lot of good books for me.
Its coming out this Christmas (and all over the TV), but Unbroken was a great audiobook. As previously mentioned, it depends on the length of your trip. Other recommendations are: 11/22/63 (long), the Lincoln Lawyer series are light and fun (you can start anywhere in the series in my opinion), The Color of Law was another law book, Ready Player One was great, The Help, Prisoner at Birth (modern day Count of Monte Cristo) , Water for Elephants.
All of these recommendations are ones that BOTH my wife and I enjoyed. Individually, we have different tastes
