Would you trade up for Amari Cooper

CMicks3110 : 12/13/2014 8:51 pm
if we have say the 7th or 8th pick in the draft in 2015, and Cooper is there at 5, would you trade up for him.

Yes, we have a lot of other needs, but if we filled a bunch through FA, what a dream receiving corps that would be. Beckham, Cruz, and Cooper.
No. There are a couple of equally talented players
Ira : 12/13/2014 8:54 pm : link
who should be there for us when we pick - both with the first initial L and both with the last name Collins.
if its the raiders were trading up with sure
CGiants07 : 12/13/2014 8:59 pm : link
we should be able to get them to take a 4th round pick to trade down 2 spots
I also don't think we have a ton of needs
CGiants07 : 12/13/2014 9:01 pm : link
1 OL plus depth
DE-how many depends on JPP
S
LB
RB
TE

that's about it for me
Don't think we will need to
Big Rick in FL : 12/13/2014 9:06 pm : link
Watkins went at 4, because the Bills are a dumb team. If they didn't trade up he wasn't going till 7 IMO. Watkins was a bit better prospect then Cooper.

I would be one happy motherfucker if we took him at 7 though. An offense with Eli, Rashad, Andre, Odell, Cruz, Cooper, Randle & Larry Donnell has the potential to be a top 3 offense in the NFL. Teams couldn't double Odell. Cruz & Cooper would pick them apart. Couldn't double Cruz. Odell & Cooper would pick them apart.
depends but the Giants won't. ...so it does not matter.
George from PA : 12/13/2014 9:14 pm : link
We will get a great player at 7......I would definitely go for a top WR and a top large OL.......and the balance defense.

Another decent draft and a supplement of FAs...and some reversal of fortune with injuries.....The Giants should be able to compete with the big boys.

I expect and hope with the jump in cap......we should be a good shape to sign some nice players. The Giants should be an attractive team for FAs.

I kind of expected we needed 2 years.......
No. Only reason to trade up is for a franchise QB
Jupiter : 12/13/2014 9:22 pm : link
Stay put or trade down for extra picks.

After the past 2 drafts, the Giants have gotten the best O-lineman in 2013 and the best WR in 2014.
Maybe 1 or 2 spots but no more
dpinzow : 12/13/2014 9:27 pm : link
If Amari isn't there the better move is to trade down unless you believe that a franchise left tackle or DL is sitting there
heck no
BigBlueCane : 12/13/2014 9:30 pm : link
the defense is almost complete rubbish.

And the OL needs at least 2 starters.
No way in hell.
Red Dog : 12/13/2014 10:12 pm : link
OL is a mess and needs serious reinforcement. And the RBs need a little more help to get a serious running game going. It doesn't matter who you have as receivers if your QB can't get the ball to them.

And that's just the start of the problems. This team needs 30 or 40 new players so they need quantity, not quality at one of the stronger positions on the team.
..
AnishPatel : 12/13/2014 10:15 pm : link
If he is on the board when the team in front is on the clock, I would do it. If not, then I am not trading too far up. I'd rather go OL if possible, and warrants the pick and finally fix the god damn OL!
The Giants DO NOT need
OldPolack : 12/13/2014 10:21 pm : link
another 1st round receiver.
NEEDS are STUD DL or BIG TE that can block or mauling guard/tackle.

Too many needs to trade up for anyone.
yatqb : 12/13/2014 10:21 pm : link
If anything I'd be willing to trade down a bit and get the best OL available a bit later in the 1st (unless there is an absolute blue chip prospect there when we are on the board).

I suspect that an OL or LB may well be the best player available when we are up...the DLs are either going higher than we'll pick or are too small to fit our 4-3 defense. And aside from Cooper (who won't be there) I'm not sure there's a WR suitable for a 7-10 pick. Same for CB, RB and TE.
No I wouldn't
eleven : 12/13/2014 10:22 pm : link
I also wouldn't trade down. Reese is Aces in round one. 2-7 pretty awful. Don't mess with that pick. If I had to choose, I'd trade up before trading down.
I think a trade up
bceagle05 : 12/13/2014 11:04 pm : link
should always be considered when you're up this high. We could be talking about All Pro-type talents in that part of the draft. If we wound up with Amari Cooper you wouldn't hear any complaints from me, regardless of how we did it.
Reese
stretch234 : 12/13/2014 11:06 pm : link
I still find it comical that people think this is terrible drafting in the 2nd rd

07 - Steve Smith
08 - Terrell Thomas
09 - Clint Sintim, Will Beatty
10 - Linval Jospeh
11 - Marvin Austin
12 - Rueben Randle
13 - Jonathan Hankins
14 - Weston Richburg

Go look - every single NFL team has missed in this round including, GB, Bal & Pitts.

No
kepler20 : 12/13/2014 11:14 pm : link
the only reasons to trade up are
1. You need a qb and have identified a franchise one

2 you feel that you are 1 player/position upgrade away from competing for the Super Bowl

We fit neither criteria
I'm perfectly fine with OBJ, Cruz, and Parker/Randle
PatersonPlank : 12/13/2014 11:19 pm : link
I want either the best OL player available, a stud LB, or a stud DL.
And,

14 - Weston Richburg

How many are starting now, and playing real well?

Just Randle, Hankins, and Richburg are starting...Nothing special about Richburg at guard...may be better as a center, we don't know....

Randle, the pro ready receiver, just continues to screw up at the wrong times....

Hankins is probably the best of the three, but he plateaued at around the 6th game.....been kind of invisible the last 4-5 games....
For 2 or 3 spots I would

We need a stud.

I'd do it
bignygfan : 12/14/2014 1:47 am : link

JohnB : 12/14/2014 2:24 am : link
Plus Reese stood pat the last 2 years and came out with talent that was much better than their drafting position would assume in the 1st round.

No!
Giants need to draft OL and DL for the next 2 years
Jimmy Googs : 12/14/2014 5:05 am : link
14 picks = 14 lineman on both sides of the ball. Don't care order of position by which they do it.

just do it...
I generally don't like trading up
Big Blue Fan 74 : 12/14/2014 5:21 am : link
Trading up is too expensive and we need OL much more than WR.

BTW, do you really want our expensive star quarterback being hit so much in the backfield?

I want us to draft OL in rounds 1 & 2 and if OL talent is not there when we draft, I would like to see us trade down.
This would be a great year to trade down
81_Great_Dane : 12/14/2014 5:50 am : link
unless there's a stud pass rushing DE or "blue goose" OLT there. If there's no trading partner, go BPA, but no trade up. The Giants need a lot of players. Fortunately, excellent interior offensive linemen, tight ends, linebackers, safeties and even running backs can be had later in the round, or in the 2nd.
Can't afford to trade up
Steve in South Jersey : 12/14/2014 6:44 am : link
Would love Cooper to fall, but those other picks are needed for OL and DL. Pick the best talent in round 1. OL is a critical need in round 2 and beyond.
No
Mike in NY : 12/14/2014 7:25 am : link
We have too many needs elsewhere. While I do not like the Round 1 OL where we will be picking I would use the pick to upgrade our D
No ....
Beer Man : 12/14/2014 7:51 am : link
When you have all the holes to fill that the Giants do you can't afford to give up high round draft picks.
Cooper could be great, but
section125 : 12/14/2014 8:25 am : link
as almost all have mentioned, there are too many needs to give up a 2nd and/or a 3rd to move up a couple slots. Reese gets good value with his top 3 picks usually. Can't afford to lose 1 or 2 additional picks.
There are so many
River Mike : 12/14/2014 8:31 am : link
situational variables to consider when you are actually on the clock. However, as a rule of thumb I think the best way to build long term is quality over quantity. You can only put eleven on the field at the same time.
Cooper
Dragon : 12/14/2014 8:56 am : link
Has to still run a sub 4-5 fourth maintain his hold as the top WR in this draft. He has looked great no one can argue that point but his final speed number will really tell the final story of his value.
If he is their guy
Headhunter : 12/14/2014 9:05 am : link
trade up and then you can trade down for picks. You will find OLine in the 3 & 4th rounds.
Victor Cruz

Short answer no.
Watson : 12/14/2014 9:09 am : link
Giants have so many needs, just pick the best available player. Frankly, if things fell right, I would be ecstatic if we ended up with DL and OL in first two rounds.
Trade up? No.
Sy'56 : 12/14/2014 9:49 am : link
Take him in the 1st round? Absolutely.
No to trading up.......
Simms11 : 12/14/2014 9:57 am : link
we need all our picks and then some. Can't afford to give up picks in our situation. Is Cooper an outstanding player? Yes, but we've said it time and again, if you are not strong along both d and o lines, you are going nowhere. Picks have to be used to solidify those areas in the first two rounds. I think we'll probably pick up another FA vet that can come in and help, like an Antwan Boldin type and with Cruz, Washington and Harris coming back, I think we will probably be OK at WR anyway.

I am not. That's a not a good WR. corps Our damn TE corps is average too. Cruz is a question mark coming back from injury. RR I can't stand as a WR. Next season will be his contract year. Parker is average and that's being too kind.

We need skill players on offense as well as OL talent.
Yes, and we should have traded up last year

Maybe, but the recovery time I saw was 8-9 months and that would mean May or June. So Training camp is still possible.
I am not an advocate of trading up, typically
BigBlueShock : 12/14/2014 10:19 am : link
unless it is for a franchise QB. So the answer is, no. However, the Giants need to move forward with the expectation that Victor Cruz will not contribute much next season, and maybe never again. Nobody knows how this severe injury is going to affect him and it would be foolish to ignore the WR position because they are counting on him coming back as good as new. If he does, great! That's what we all want. But if he doesn't, and they don't upgrade the position because they were counting on him, this would be one of the worst units in football.
No.
bob in tx : 12/14/2014 10:23 am : link
I wouldn't trade up for anyone except maybe Williams but even then you give up too much to get into top 3.

we were that ONE PLAYER away from winning the big show, yes....

This team is many players away.....too many on this board are over rating the talent of our players for next year.....yes one OLman could make the line RESPECTABLE, but not really good.....Beatty is a mistake waiting to happen, Schwartz has shown nothing, hoping Richburg can be a better than average center, where will Pugh play and at what level, and just how good will the new guy be? And then there is the matter of not having one decent backup for any of them,,,,,

Cruz has gone down two years in a row...that is a flag....Jennings is not a war horse.....TE situation is still up in the air.....

Resign JPP and Rolle? At what cost? Need a DT....Need a DE...Need a couple of linebackers.....need backup corners....need a whole new group of safeties, if Rolle doesn't accept less money....

And out of all those guys, how many do you think Reese will click on?

I think the OL is top Priority for Eli's closing window....
Agree with Dragon
Bob in Newburgh : 12/14/2014 11:05 am : link
40 time is not the be all and end all, but Cooper does not have great height although 6'1" ain't bad.

He does not need to time as the NFL's fastest man, but I do think he needs a 4.45 or better to hold his draft position.

Assuming Cruz recovery is not in real doubt, I would much rather go stud pass rusher than WR.

Beatty is more than adequate at LT. We need a reliable RT and should not have to use a top 10 pick to get one. Richburg is our C and Pugh our LG unless Coughlin continues with his crapping around non-sense that a Trindon Holiday can play RT if need be. I would rather have good players with the physical skills to excel at a position than versatile crap.

We need lineman
Marty866b : 12/14/2014 11:21 am : link
Enough of the wideouts. We have a true #1 receiver in Beckham. Receivers are a dime a dozen. We are among the weakest teams on the offensive and defensive lines. You guys want to see Romo stand back there for an eternity again? You want to see Eli get hit before he even sets up? The games are won and lost on the lines and at quarterback. We have the quarterback. It's time to give him some protection and get a couple of guys who can get after the quarterback. Enough with the wide receiver talk!

Cooper is there when we pick and we don't and take a lineman I will be furious. A skill player at that talent level you take him...trading up to get that player I wouldn't do. We need picks and have other needs
I agree with Marty. OL or DL ideally,
yatqb : 12/14/2014 11:54 am : link
but I'd add a top LB to that mix, a guy who can both cover and rush the passer -- a stud who is a difference-maker.
I'd go Green-Beckham

at the top of the 2nd instead. Will end up being a better player in the end, yes there are off field concerns but I think he justs needs stability. He's a monster, I see similarities to Dez Bryant with him. At 6'5 would be perfect on te outside with Beckham.

You've gotta be damn sure about his character if you take him. And the Giants have become more risk-averse in the last two years. Less high-ceiling/low floor guys in these recent drafts, thank god.
