Terrorists earlier who were planning on staging public beheadings. This could be related.

Apparently a fairly common message.

Moments earlier, he noticed a sticker on the outside window of one of his classrooms: an image of a black flag with the words of the Muslim shahada, which translates to "There is no god but God and Mohamed is His messenger." The flag and slogan constitute a symbol often associated with militant Islamist groups, including Al Qaeda.

The gunman has reportedly told hostages he has planted four bombs.

He said two bombs are in the cafe and the others are elsewhere in the CBD, Network Ten reports.

He also demanded delivery of an Islamic State flag and a conversation with Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

Network Ten says it has spoken with two hostages inside the cafe, who were hysterical as they relayed the man's demands.

Suspect

is believed to be Iranian.

As the standoff entered its 15th hour, with police and news crews surrounding the shop as frightened hostages looked out through the front window, police identified Man Haron Monis as the gunman holding captives inside Lindt Chocolat Cafe. His identity was known early on to police and media alike, but was only released for the record by police sources as night fell on Sydney with the nation transfixed on the televised scene.

Monis, who reportedly emigrated to Australia in 1996, is known in Australia for his public campaign of writing letters to the families of fallen soldiers calling them “murderers” and urging the recipients to lobby the government to withdraw from Afghanistan. Haron was charged in 2009 with using the postal service to harass in a case he fought all the way to Australia’s highest court, which dismissed his appeal.

Last year, he was charged in connection with the murder of his ex-wife in a case that is pending as Monis is free on bail. He was charged earlier this year with sexual assault of a woman who went to his office in New South Wales for "spiritual healing."

like he's deranged more than an "Islamic terrorist"

"His ideology is just so strong and so powerful that it clouds his vision for common sense and objectiveness," Manny Conditsis, Monis's former lawyer, told Australia's ABC. Conditsis also said he believes Monis is acting alone.

"This is a one-off random individual," he said. "It's not a concerted terrorism event or act. It's a damaged goods individual whose done something outrageous."

The Sydney Morning Herald has more on Monis:

He recently likened himself on his own webpage to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, claiming the most recent charges against him have been laid for "political reasons".

His website also carries a quote, posted earlier this month stating: "I used to be a Rafidi, but not any more. Now I am a Muslim, Alhamdu Lillah".

It has been Monis' on-going legal battle for his conviction for penning the poisonous letters to the families of dead Australian soldiers between 2007 and 2009 that has consumed him.

It is understood Monday's incident followed an unsuccessful, last-ditch attempted in the High Court on Friday to have the charges overturned.
Must not be strict requirements to be a 'cleric'.
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/15/2014 10:49 am : link
Police say they believe the man who seized hostages is Man Haron Monis - an Iranian-born cleric who has been granted asylum in Australia.

reports that Man Haron Monis is well known to the Australian police. The cleric is currently on bail for being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife and is facing more than 40 sexual and indecent assault charges. Below is an archive image of the suspect.

That's pretty much the definition of a lone wolf terrorist.

He's a Muslim and wrote those poisonous letters to the to the families. Hence he will be labeled as an "Islamic Terrorist". Rightly or wrongly.
