Serby NYP: 99.9% Chance Coughlin Returns

Riggies : 12/15/2014 12:05 am
Not really news at this point, but backing up what Francesser has claimed recently:

Quote:
"99.9 percent he’s back,” a source familiar with the club’s thinking told The Post Sunday night.

The Giants, as is their preferred policy, prefer to make their decisions public when the season ends.

“I have no comment,” co-owner John Mara said following Giants 24, Redskins 13.

“No comment,” co-owner Steve Tisch said.

Neither owner would divulge whether the decision on Coughlin’s future has already been made.

A source had told The Post several weeks ago Coughlin’s return at that time was “50-50.”

Serby's reasoning. - ( New Window )

So we beat two of the worst teams in football
Essex : 12/15/2014 5:08 am : link
and that wipes away three years of dreadful football????
Or missing playoffs 5 of 6 years.

Now I know why we haven't made the playoffs 5 of 6 years
Exactly
jeff57 : 12/15/2014 6:29 am : link
And if they lose the last two they'll be 5-11 ending the season with 2 straight losses. Just the formula to bring him back to go for three losing seasons in a row.
if Coughlin's back
jsboston : 12/15/2014 6:30 am : link
then so is Kiwi, Herzlich, Kuhn, maybe even Snee.

Moore is back to the bench.
...
SanFranGiantsFan : 12/15/2014 6:41 am : link
I think he's coming back. And as long as Fewell & Quinn are gone, I'm alright with that. I think another season in McAdoo's offense will work wonders, provided OL is much better next season.

transitioning to McAdoo in 2016. Seems to have been the plan from the beginning. If they're that certain he's coming back, they should just say it and eliminate the uncertainty around Coughlin...he deserves that much.

Absolutely not! Think of the future. If the Giants maintain the policy of never talking about a coaches future until after the season, reporters can never read things into it and speculate that the coach is in trouble because the team won't talk about it. Is just policy.

And Fewell and Quinn. Might as well bring everyone back since we had such a successful season. The teams they have beaten have a combined record of 20-50.
I'm 99.9 % sure...

only way Fewell goes,
Simms11 : 12/15/2014 7:18 am : link
is if TC gets an extension and Mara feels injuries had a significant effect on the defense. Personally, I still see too much miscommunication, even yesterday and schemes appear iffy at times. I don't know who to blame. Carl Banks thinks it's on the players. That would be more an indictment of Reese. Just have never been a fan of Fewell personally and he really only had a decent defense during 2011 playoffs and when Beason came in last year.

blueblood'11 : 12/15/2014 7:20 am : link
I didn't near Tom's presser but if he brings back Fewell im going to throw up. Why, so he can keep guys like Kennard and Moore under wraps??? Those two guys were all ove the field when they were on it.

He was the genius who took Kennard out after he nearly intercepted RGIII right before the half and it would have been a pick six. Then they went right down the field and almost scored on that disputed non touchdown. Then he put Kennard back in the game when it became first and goal right before that controversial play.

I have no confidence in that guy. I don't know how he has managed to survive this long. It's hard to understand what he is coaching. They constantly lose contain. They always get sucked in on mix direction. When he dials up pressures guys are running free all over the place with no one near to cover. It happened over and over again yesterday.

If not for the defensive line playing the way they did in the second half they probably lose this game. Wynn is another guy who really plays well and did so in preseason. Why did it take so long for them to get this guy on the field? Fewell has to go.
Wow. I'd be OK with Coughlin retireing
mrvax : 12/15/2014 7:38 am : link
but sad knowing the next HC would not be as good as Coughlin.
I'd really like to see a new DC. Year after year the defense is confused on the field and blow way too many coverages. They don't know how to blitz. The cannot get a critical game deciding stop.

I think the big factor is magically cutting down on injuries and getting a bit more talent, and getting a new DC.

If Coughlin stays, Perry will be back.

gmen9892 : 12/15/2014 8:37 am : link
I think the last game of the season is going to be really important. If the Eagles manage another 27+ points on our defense, I think the Front Office will have seen enough (if they haven't already) to see that Fewell simply cannot game plan for a good offense.

I never want to see the Giants lose, so that is one game where I'd love to see us come out on top 35-31.

Well these last 2 games have proven that Tom "hasn't forgotten how to coach" so if we lose the next 2 games it must be due to a lack of talent and we should fire Reese.

nate, if the Giants see fit to move on from Coughlin I'm all for the decision. I also understand how frustrated a lot of folks are...these sucky seasons, well, they suck!

I'm just not a change for the sake of change person. Tell me some names. Tell me who is out there so I can study their work and get fired up about thepossibilities!
This was always going to happen....
Britt in VA : 12/15/2014 9:06 am : link
it's not off two wins or anything that's happened in the past two weeks or so.

The truth is, there was very little chance he was going to be let go this year, regardless of how the season ended up from the get go.

The only time he'll be shown the door is when he's ready to retire.

Fewell will be let go. They will let McAdoo continue his education under Coughlin. No idea about Quinn.

Been saying this all season.
All kidding aside
aquidneck : 12/15/2014 9:11 am : link
This is Reese's team now. He's in his 50s (prime for an executive in any field) and able to be accountable for the Giants' future. Reese should decide whether TC stays or goes and either way be held responsible for the results.

There was an article in one of the NY rags a month or so back that discussed how the re-hiring of Steve Spagnuolo at DC could fix the Giants. Was this just fantasy conjecture, or is there any real talk of Spags being reunited with the Giants?
The heads have started to explode
HomerJones45 : 12/15/2014 9:36 am : link
unless Mara lost his mind completely and listened to the entitled morons in the fanbase, Coughlin was coming back.

You guys have had good coaching for so long, you don't know the difference anymore between good coaching and bad coaching.

This team could have tanked completely with a 7 game losing streak featuring several heartbreaking losses, cb's coming in off practice squads to play, having to depend on rookies like Williams and flakes like Moore for bodies. They have held together, there is no sniping or back-biting (see Chicago Bears, Washington Redskins), and they are out there competing, finding guys who can play, and laying the foundation where a good draft and a couple of free agents get them right back in it.

Follow the Major

but the players seem to still be playing hard and there are a few bright spots.

I know a lot of fans are frustrated and want Coughlin gone, and Coughlin is ultimately responsible for this season, but I never thought the Giants would make a change this year.

I think, imho, we may even see some heads explode around here in a few weeks, because I have a feeling we may even see Fewell come back(personally I hope not).

I think Quinn may have hurt his chances a bit today(Coughlin didn't appear happy late)but I wonder if we'll see much in the way of change.

I don't understand how having the team playing hard when there is nothing to play for trumps the team being awful when there was everything to play for. 3 straight years the team has played hard after throwing the season away. This is the standard management is satisfied with?

MadTeck : 12/15/2014 10:30 am : link
Bill Parcells did it best when he made the personal changes and coached the team. Coughlin knows how to build a championship team. His influence after the 2006 and 2011 seasons brought NYC two titles. Let TC find and place the right people at the right position and let him have a greater stake in the team. NYC has 4 SB Titles and if they want a second it will take one person to take the reigns and put puzzle back together. Let's not forget it's Eli's, JPP's, Prince's and other players contract year.. LET THEM GO OUT SWINGING!!

bigblueheadache : 12/15/2014 1:11 pm : link
He was mediocre with the Bills and no better here. I don't want to think his skin color played a part in his hiring, but considering we have hired more black DC's in the past 15 years than probably any other team in football, I think politics had something to do with it. Hope he goes because he's not getting it done and it shows on the field.
Why make this a race issue?

or reassert the management structure. No one knows what the first scenario looks like, but as I said earlier, this is Reese's team now. He's the one on top and in the prime if his career.

Should be his decision whether or not TC goes. Either way he is directly accountable for results in the field.

Similarly, if retained, Coughlin must be given authority to run his own ship, choose his own coirdinators, Fewell and Quinn included.
