Eli needs to be extended this offseason....

kmed : 12/15/2014 9:20 am
He has proven, at least to me, that he's still a great NFL QB. He's not in the upper echelon in the NFL, but he's clearly someone we need for the next 3-4 years at a minimum. Great bounceback season and clearly last year was a disaster on all fronts, not just the QB. The system was terrible, the line was terrible, the running game was terrible, the weapons were non existent. With just slight improvements on all fronts, he's proven to be a very valuable piece moving. If we once again bolster the line a bit and maybe add a weapon, I expect this offense to be very, very good. Eli needs to be extended to lower his cap number, allow us to add other pieces and most importantly, ensure he's around for a while longer.

Below average offensive line play
bxgiants4 : 12/15/2014 9:25 am : link
Again this year. He needs protection
I'd love him to take a team friendly deal
GIANTSr01 : 12/15/2014 9:34 am : link
but that's 99% wishful thinking...

A backloaded deal averaging $20-22M per could probably get it done and keep his cap hit <$15M for the next 2-3 seasons.
He needs to look at what Tom Brady has done
kmed : 12/15/2014 9:35 am : link
and take a note from his playbook if he wants the Giants to build a good team around him.
No.
AcidTest : 12/15/2014 9:37 am : link
Pay him the $17M next season. Franchise him the season after that if necessary. By then he's 36. I admire what he's done this year with no running game, few weapons aside from Beckham, and a bad OL. But he's still made some unbelievably bad throws. Five INTs against SF, and the inexplicable throw against the Titans leap to mind. Even yesterday's throw to RR across his body and field in tight coverage was ill advised.

I'd love that obviously, but hard to ask someone to freely give up $10M a year.
Here's Brady's contract info:

Eli's going to get his $$$. You guys act like Brady plays for free.
Brady - ( New Window )
I can't wait until Brady's deal gets redone this offseason
YAJ2112 : 12/15/2014 9:46 am : link
so everyone will shut the fuck up about how he signed this "below market" contract.
Why?
kmed : 12/15/2014 9:46 am : link
Are you arguing that Brady didn't sign a very team friendly deal?
Tom Brady giving the hometown discount isn't really true...
Britt in VA : 12/15/2014 9:47 am : link
I was reading this somewhere else, but his guaranteed money becomes 60 million dollars as long as he plays in the last regular season game this year, and he's 36.

If Brady is relatively healthy at the start of next season, they will restructure him again.

It was creative cap work on their part, but he gets his money.
He got more guaranteed money
kmed : 12/15/2014 9:48 am : link
which is fine, he deserves it, but he most certainly could have gotten more. He left money on the table for the good of the team and they gave a little back by guaranteeing more.
So at the end of this season...
Britt in VA : 12/15/2014 9:48 am : link
Brady will have essentially played a 3 year, 60 million dollar guaranteed contract.
Imagine a run game
Rjanyg : 12/15/2014 9:48 am : link
to go with this passing game.
It's still 3 years at an average of 20 million per, guaranteed.
Britt in VA : 12/15/2014 9:49 am : link
And it was signed 3 years ago, before that was the going rate for QB's.
Tom Brady signed a 5 year 60 million(70 million??) deal.
kmed : 12/15/2014 9:50 am : link
In comparison. Peyton signed a 5 year 100 million dollar deal. The cap numbers are whats important and theres a big difference because of structure.

One only has to look to the other Met Life locker room to see the problems of not having a franchise QB ... and the Giants trophy case to see the benefits ...

Eli gives us a chnace to win any game at any time ... Even with a makeshift O'Line, a practice squad TE, losing your #1 receiver and a rookie RB who had no receptions his entire college career replacing the oft injured vet ... The offense still has been able to shine at times ...

He signed a cap friendly deal, but he didn't take less money. And when he redoes the deal this offseason, I'm sure it will be similarly structured to get him paid but spread the cap hit out.

At some point when he retires, the Pats will have to eat a bunch of dead money the way they are structuring his deals. But they are doing a good job of managing his cap hit while still paying him top QB $ so they can keep a good team around him.

Hopefully the Giants are taking notes and can structure Eli's next deal(s) that way.
This is what Brady could have gotten..
kmed : 12/15/2014 9:52 am : link
3/20/2012: Signed a five-year, $96 million contract. The deal includes $18 million guaranteed -- Manning's 2012 base salary. The guarantees can rise to $60 million (Manning's 2013-2014 base salaries) if he passes a physical on March 13 of 2013 (He did). Manning's fourth-year salary becomes guaranteed if on roster at end of year three, and his fifth-year salary becomes guaranteed if on roster at end of year four. 2014: $15 million, 2015-2016: $19 million, 2017: Free Agent

This is what Brady got:

Tom Brady signed a 5 year / $70.60 million contract with the New England Patriots, including a $30,000,000 signing bonus, $33,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $14,120,000.

Oh yeah, this was after Manning got his contract.
If Jay Cutler got this deal, Brady is clearly playing for less...
kmed : 12/15/2014 9:53 am : link
1/2/2014: Signed a seven-year, $126.7 million contract. The deal contains $54 million guaranteed -- each of Cutler's first three base salaries. There was no signing bonus. 2014: $17.5 million (+ $5 million "signing" bonus), 2015: $15.5 million, 2016: $16 million, 2017: $12.5 million (+ $2.5 million in per-game roster bonuses), 2018: $13.5 million (+ $2.5 million in per-game roster bonuses), 2019: $17.5 million (+ $2.5 million in per-game roster bonuses), 2020: $19.2 million (+ $2.5 million in per-game roster bonuses), 2021: Free Agent
Maybe you guys can make a case that Stafford
kmed : 12/15/2014 9:54 am : link
is better which is why he was paid this around the same exact time....

7/9/2013: Signed a five-year, $76.5 million contract. The deal contains $41.5 million guaranteed, including a $27.5 million signing bonus. 2014: $2 million, 2015: $9.5 million, 2016: $17 million, 2017: $16.5 million, 2018: Free Agent
Rivers signed this deal in 2009, so prices haven't skyrocketed
kmed : 12/15/2014 9:56 am : link
a month after Brady signed his team friendly deal.

8/24/2009: Signed a seven-year, $98.25 million contract. The deal contains $38.15 million guaranteed, including a $19.55 million signing bonus, Rivers' 2009-2010 base salaries, and a second-year option bonus of $6 million. He was paid an additional $5 million "signing" bonus during the 2013 offseason. 2014: $13.8 million, 2015: $15.75 million, 2016: Free Agent
Brady's deal is essentially a 2 year deal with $33mm guaranteed
YAJ2112 : 12/15/2014 9:59 am : link
and he got another $24mm guaranteed money (which is his salaries for
15-17) which will be pushed into his redone deal in the offseason.
kmed...
Britt in VA : 12/15/2014 10:01 am : link
in all of those deals the players you're bringing up were 3-4, years younger than Brady, or the equivalent of nearly an entire life cycle of a contract.

It makes a difference.

As YAJ said, he helped them with the cap, but he didn't take less money to do it.

Also like YAJ said, I hope the Giants can do something similar for Eli.
Except that Peyton guy.
kmed : 12/15/2014 10:05 am : link
Tom Brady was at the peak of his game at the time, age had absolutely nothing to do with it. The Pats were creative with the structure, but Brady 100% took less than he could have gotten.
Let's see what Tom gets this offseason....
Britt in VA : 12/15/2014 10:08 am : link
tacked onto the sixty mil he's already recieved.

In the absence of a really bad throw, we're taking to criticizing his completions now, are we? Rodgers, Brees, Brady, Peyton make that throw and we talk about how great they are. Eli makes it, and we're bashing him for it.
he took insurance
YAJ2112 : 12/15/2014 10:09 am : link
if he retired after this season, he would have played 2 years and been paid 57mm.

When he makes the easy decision to keep playing, he will redo the deal and structure it similarly.
He is in the upper echelon to me
mrvax : 12/15/2014 10:11 am : link

The Giants cap situation is quite healthy
Milton : 12/15/2014 10:31 am : link
There is no need to extend Eli. If he'd accept a team-friendly extension, great, but I wouldn't count on it. Chances are he's going to want something in the vicinity of what Flacco, Ryan, and Brees received, meaning 20+M/year with at least $40M guaranteed. Considering that the Giants have him under contract for $17M next year and the cost of franchising him in 2016 would be roughly $21M, there should be no rush to give him a deal that pays him more than that over the next two years.

Bottomline--the Giants won't be handcuffed by Eli's contract in 2015, so why commit stacks of guaranteed money to him when the future is uncertain.

media and fans of other teams I've takes to perceive that he's having 'another bad year,' after the 5 pick nationally televised game. Fact is, he's been good this year. was great at times such as games 2-5 until Cruz got hurt when the O started clicking. Overall a very solid year. The nonexistent run game when Jennings missed games has been the biggest problem, the personnel needs to be bolstered, the line of course.

Why give him a blank check when it's cheaper to give him a check for $17M? Eli isn't going anywhere.
why?

He's not twisting in the wind. He knows he's not going anywhere. And it's not like he'll be scrimping on Christmas and Hanukkah gifts this year because he's unsure about his future income.

I really don't think Eli is going to consider being paid $17M a sign of disrespect.

is bullshit. we paid him for the super bowls. now he needs to fall back in line with a team friendly deal and take up a much lower percentage of the salary cap. their poor drafting, injuries and bad free agent signings have made it very tough to build a team with eli taking up this much cap space.

Look, if Eli wants to accept a team-friendly deal, I'm sure the Giants would be open to giving him an extension. But I wouldn't necessarily anticipate that. I'm not saying it isn't possible that Eli will sign an extension, I'm just saying it's not something the Giants "need" to do (as the op opines).

With Eli under contract for 2015 and with the franchise tag an option for 2016, the Giants have the leverage in negotiations. And my guess is that Tom Condon would rather put his faith in Eli having a stellar 2015 and do his negotiating the following off-season when the leverage is more balanced.
Let the season play out
AnnapolisMike : 12/15/2014 10:53 am : link
I think the next two games will be a pretty good measuring stick of where the team and Eli are right now. It is difficult to make much out of beating a really dysfunctional Washington team.

You just completely missed my point.
Britt in VA : 12/15/2014 10:53 am : link
NO WAY does Condon want Eli playing his final year without an extension.
