How would Beckham do in Gilbrides offense?

yankeeslover : 12/15/2014 9:36 am
Assuming in an alternate universe where Gilbride was still coach and Eli had a halfway decent line to give him time.. Do you think he would have taking a couple years to learn that complicated offense and would not be the monster he is today? or do you think that vertical attack would have suited him? I dont think he would have been the monster he is so early.. esp with missing training camp...
He wouldn't

even get on the field with that option route tree.
He would be even more impossible to defend

If he and Eli were on the same page...there is no ceiling really
What about Erhardt's offense?

he would have been completely unstoppable

for all the pissing and moaning about the option routes and Gilbride's offense, it made stars out of Nicks and Cruz and got Bennett a big contract. Burress, no rocket scientist, picked it right up as did Steve Smith. With Beckham's ability, he would have been a 17 yards a catch, double digit td terror with option routes.

But, if you like watching him catch 7 yard passes, fine.
Yeah Homer, It sucks
drkenneth : 12/15/2014 9:46 am : link
watching him catch 12 balls and 3 TDs.

You're a clown.

Beckham is a great player
BigBlueinChicago : 12/15/2014 9:47 am : link
he would fit in any offense with the skill set he has.

As you can see, Reuben Randle has not "flourished" with the coaching change and is one more discipline situation away from a permanent spot in the doghouse.
He'd be a monster.

Smart receivers excelled in that offense. Even the dumb ones put up numbers. One thing was clear about the Coughlin/Gilbride offense - it was VERY WR-friendly.
Gilbride doesn't work here anymore.
drkenneth : 12/15/2014 9:58 am : link
Or anywhere for that matter. Let it go.
Really the Coryell Vertical
RetroJint : 12/15/2014 10:00 am : link
is dead. Witness the Cowboys for proof positive. And Kevin always held down Cruz & Nicks. Randle? Oh let's forget about him for the moment. Must be a body-lean situation at work there.
You make a system to fit the talent you have
JohnB : 12/15/2014 10:13 am : link
not the other way around.

Both BM and KG would find a way to get OBJ the ball. Anything less is just plain dumb.
As hard as it is to believe I think he would be even more explosive

Receivers of all levels of intelligence excelled in KGs offense
armsteadeatslittlekids : 12/15/2014 10:21 am : link
From Smith, Nicks, and Cruz all the way down to Mario Manningham.

You know who didn't? The receivers that sucked.

The myth that you had to be a genius to play receiver in that offense was born out of Jerrel Jernigan sucking and Randle making mistakes. And, surprise, both are still true in the new offense.
Some guys are great in any

System. He looks to be one of them

Gilbride's system fell apart because Reese let the OL go to shit and the WR talent wasn't enough once Nicks broke down.

I have to disagree with you. Randle didn't flourish mostly because of his lack of work and his lack of understanding. He has still struggled because of the former and also because he is still not making correct reads when he needs to.

Manningham, by the way, was very similar to Randle before he hurt his knee. He was very talented and capable of big plays, but often made mental mistakes in the old offense.
If Gilbride were still here, ODB would be buried on the depth chart

because of missing too much time this summer..
I thought about that last night.

It's hard to tell. But could he learn all the positions that quick and still be productive? I am not sure, and on top of that he missed a lot of time early on due to injury. If I had to guess I would say no. If he did learn or absorb information, perhaps outside WR, X or Z. But to learn all of them, and be productive, that would be tough.

Plus there is the obvious too. A lot of the vertical passing concepts are 5 and 7 step drop. If by chance, we were still in the old system, I think we would be in trouble. I use the Eagles game as the example. We got away from the passing concepts used earlier. We got the shit kicked out of us. I would expect games like that if we were in the old system.

disagree.

there have been more receivers that have failed in KG's offense than receivers that have thrived in it...a lot of them are sitting at home on their couch because of it.

I can only think of 3 or 4 receivers that were outstanding in that offense... Toomer, Steve Smith, Victor Cruz and most of Hakeem's career as a Giant....Shockey, Bennett, Plax, Manningham and a whole bunch of others were never consistent enough with their routes.

He averages 13.7 yards per reception, 40th in the league.

Both Cruz and MM needed a red shirt year to pick up the offense. OBJ missed all of training camp and the first 4 games of this year. But was producing immediately after he returned in his rookie season.
What's your point?

LM,

From what I remember, we took between 4-5 games to adjust, and go to quick passing concepts that weren't 5 and 7 drops and their associated longer depth routes.
in Gilbrides offense
mdc1 : 12/15/2014 1:39 pm : link
he would probably have about 50% of the production as most of his catches would have been beyond 20 yards with less percentage of completion (overthrows, etc). Right now this type of offense makes him a weapon across all areas of the field, which is ok for now, but not the future if we expect to have him around healthy.

Enjoy it now, because someone will figure how to slow him down and it won't be the scheme.
