2015 Keepers and Goners

Bluenatic : 12/15/2014 3:22 pm
There were 22 new players on the Giants roster at the beginning of the season and I am expecting more roster turnover next season. As the G-Men play out the string here to end the season, why not make some early predictions about which of these 2014 Giants will remain Giants in 2015?

My recommendations are as follows. K is for Keeper and G is for Goner.

Feel free to add your own lists.

Presteon Parker
ECham : 12/15/2014 3:26 pm : link
is not un useable as a 5th WR/Kick Returner/ ST player
I didn't finish
Semipro Lineman : 12/15/2014 3:27 pm : link
going down the list but do you realized that you are predicting or hoping for 18 new players on offense? Doesn't that seem a bit much? Granted some of those guys are on the IR but still...
Case in point, you got only 4 linemen returning as keepers. Replace a couple of starters and all the depth as well?

There is nothing wrong with
section125 : 12/15/2014 3:30 pm : link
Preston Parker or Ogletree.

I'd keep Walton.

Not getting rid of Adrien Robinson.

The defense well....have at it. Thik after the past two weeks Antrel might be done, as much as I like him.
Hmm... wonder based on your why would Hynoski be a keeper
Mason : 12/15/2014 3:32 pm : link
He is under used and the run blocking particularly short yardage game has been poor.
Yeah, a lot of those listed
Enoch : 12/15/2014 3:32 pm : link
"goners" are, at the very least, getting an invitation to training camp and a shot to defend their roster spot.
I'd keep Chykie Brown
Headhunter : 12/15/2014 3:34 pm : link
He is playing decently,he can provide depth
Randle will be back
GIANTSr01 : 12/15/2014 3:37 pm : link
He has 1 year left on his deal, and there's virtually no cap benefit to cutting him.

I think Walton returns as well (hopefully as the backup OC)
Marcus Harris is another guy we all seem to forget
mofti : 12/15/2014 3:37 pm : link
I could see him replacing Randle at the 2 if he has another strong camp and preseason.

Parker should be brought back as an insurance to Cruz.
Kuhn will also make it to camp at least
GIANTSr01 : 12/15/2014 3:38 pm : link
and could stick as the 4th/5th DT

Kickers and Snappers: All good here

5 Steve Weatherford - K
3 Josh Brown - K

Three major items for me this offseason are 1)draft a blue chip OT, make the moves on the line I suggested 2)Sign JPP back (hopefully at Top 5-10 money and let Rolle walk unless its on a mutually beneficial deal 3) Go get Suhhhhhhhh
I agree that some of the guys marked as goners.....
Bluenatic : 12/15/2014 3:41 pm : link
.... will at least be invited to camp and that a number of them will likely stick. Some of this is wishful thinking.
Good thread...
Dan in the Springs : 12/15/2014 3:43 pm : link
I disagree with a lot of what you've got, but that's what makes for good discussion. I'm going to respond as though everyone were under contract (since I don't really know everyone's full contract status).

I would definitely be bringing Parker back. Randle too. You need to have guys who are ready to contribute, and these guys both are. Randle hasn't given us a return on the investment, but that's because we invested so much in him, not because he can't contribute. If he'd been an undrafted rookie free agent we'd be thrilled with the value he provides. Case in point: you want to keep Washington over him even though he's proved to be far more productive than Washington has. Same thing with Jernigan. He'd at least make it to camp.

I'd also be bringing back Robinson - but on a short leash, and I would still be looking at finding more talent for the TE position.

Mosely would stay, as would Jerry and Brewer. I'd be signing 2-3 more vets though to compete and draft at least 2 more OL (only 1 high).

Don't disagree with your DL G/K with maybe the exception of Patterson. I'd probably bring him in to camp if I could. Kiwi could only stay if he took vet min.

I'd bring back Peysinger and Herzlich as you need about 9 backers anyway.

Chykie Brown is a definite keeper for me. He's young, has speed, and should continue to improve. I don't think he's played too terribly either.

The rest of your assessment is okay, imo.
interesting
snumber6 : 12/15/2014 3:43 pm : link
only 4 OL being kept ... granted the talent is not the greatest ... but the street FA and next year rookies would even be worse ... fill in the 5th with an expensive FA like Baas or Schwartz who'll rapidly find the IR ...

I disagree
Doomster : 12/15/2014 3:44 pm : link
on Randle....you have him for the last year of his rookie contract....maybe the light goes on in a contract year for him?

Unless you have a replacement for Parker, I'd keep him......Washington has showed he can play against scrubs.....he has to play against starters in preseason, and show he deserves to be here....

Unfortunately, I don't think you can fully clean house on the OL......we definitely need a MINIMUM of one starter, and better backups......and the 4 starters we have, are average at best....

We Need a good RB, who can stay on the field......not sure Donnell and Fells are the answer.....we need a blocking TE, who can catch an occasional pass....

JW? No....even have to question Beason's health.....McClain is slow.....

If we do not re-sign Rolle(we still need an upgrade over him), we have no safeties on this roster.....

Need DT's, DE's.....I think JPP is gone....

Can Cruz come back? Will he be on PUP for half the season?

Just a lot of holes on this team.....

I don't want Bowman back.....
Where are you going to find the 31 replacements

Keepers
DP : 12/15/2014 3:55 pm : link
Randle, Marcus Harris, Robinson. - Harris flashed in training camp until injuries put him on IR. Robinson is our best blocking tight end and does have a lot of talent.

Mosley, Walton and Herman. - They all can fill backup roles.

Kuhn - Run stopper

Paysinger - Smart, doesn't make mistakes

Both Browns, Rolle. - Until we can find someone better.

Kuhn?

Is a run stopper. When and where? Ten yards down the field. The guy is awful.
Rubin Randle will be on the team, that's a complete given
JohnB : 12/15/2014 4:17 pm : link
he has the goods (but hasn't shown it), on the last year of his contract and will be asked to be the 3rd WR. Who is the heck is cutting him? I'll agree that 2015 might be his last year with the Giants but it makes no sense to cut him before May of 2016.

Arc, I think Rolle's future depends on if there are any real good offers from other teams. I don't think there will be though. His 2014 campaign was not impressive. We may get him back for cheaper.

Hillis, Randle and Herzlich all can play a role and allow you more flexibility come draft time.

I do agree with most of the thread starters Gones, though...were to get 39 or what have you, players...

A lot depends on what happens with the coaching staff.
Big Blue Blogger : 12/15/2014 4:34 pm : link
That said, most of the controversy seems to revolve around a very small number of players. Of these, a few could either play major roles or be gone:

Pierre-Paul (50-50; not under contract)
Randle (Probably here)
Rolle (Probably gone; not under contract)
Beason (No clue)
Walton (No clue)

The rest of the close calls aren't really that important:
Jenkins
Hynoski (not under contract)
Brown (not under contract)
Robinson
Mosley
Jerry (not under contract)
Fells (not under contract)
Herzlinger (not under contract - two LBs, worth one line)
Hosley
etc.
etc.
etc.
Beason will be back
BillT : 12/15/2014 4:41 pm : link
They may ask him for a paycut but they'll want him in camp.
Coughlin and Fewell love Kuhn
Mason : 12/15/2014 4:49 pm : link
I don't get it. Must be a great practice and meeting guy. Same with guys like Herzlich and Paysinger. Some of these will make the roster not based on talent but factors like how much coaches love them. Kuhn looks like he should be a beast but it doesn't translate in games.
G & K
Dragon : 12/15/2014 4:55 pm : link
Some of the G you had are signed for cheap contracts which until after the FA and draft periods will more than likely remain. The JPP issue is going to be a big problem not sure what his value is to the team or league wide. Rolle could be a very good indication of what if any hope this team has of winning soon, if he is quick to sign elsewhere then our secondary is in rebuild deep mode very early. Kuhn and Patterson not sure how they made the team from camp to this point. Why we are still holding on them is a concern from a move forward and future development of other young players.

In truth I can't see how we don't bring RR back unless he is traded NE would love to have a WR with his talent. As for all the other hurt or Ogletree and Parker if we can't replace them easily then it's another nightmare at WR next year. Cruz is a big mystery no one knows if or when he will return so it's not wise to count on him when making WR decisions. Washington has wasted a season on the bench for some reason or he is just not any good another team secret.
Damn guys let's be honest we have no idea what direction this team is going in the near future so it's almost impossible to predict who will come and go.
Another vote to keep Parker
njm : 12/15/2014 5:04 pm : link
Based on his being a solid KO return man who is as good as most 5th WRs in the league.
I just love these posts about roster moves
Jupiter : 12/15/2014 5:12 pm : link
It is pretty easy to judge the roster based on performance but who stays and who leaves depends more on the $$ and length of a guy's contract compared to performance.

You can't just dump a guy because his performance is average or less than average because then you have to rely on draft picks and overpriced free agents to fill out your roster. Either that or bring in a JAG who doesn't know the system to replace a JAG who does know the system.

He'd be some I think they'd want in camp as a depth player. Harris is sure to be back. Walton, too. Even if he's a backup he'd be a very good backup and given the Giants injury woes he's a good insurance policy.

Ogbuehi, Scherff are seen as Guards, not Tackles at the NFL level. As for the rest of your garbled message, try writing it in English and I'll get back to you.

By the way, Suh is going to be looking for QB money; if you don't understand why that's a foolish investment, I have some stocks I'd like to dump on you.

Where do you get this stuff. Neither of those OTs, who are listed as top OT prospects, will play guard. Then you combine a grammar criitique with a financial investment joke. Here goes
dpinzow : 12/15/2014 7:23 pm : link

15 Kevin Ogletree - GONE
88 Corey Washington - KEEP, he has some decent skills

think Randle gets traded on draft day.To unreliablle and patience is wearing thin.
why
Eric from BBI : Admin : 12/15/2014 7:57 pm : link
would you assume Marcus Harris is gone? Before he got hurt, he was vying for s starting spot.
None of it matters unless

RB Needed
Jeffrey : 12/15/2014 9:21 pm : link
I know that Jennings and Williams are staying but I think another RB is needed, particularly one with speed.
Adrian Robinson, TE has been playing more
SGMen : 12/15/2014 9:40 pm : link
In his limited spots he is showing flashes of some talent. Yes, we've waited three years on him. His first two years were a joke with injuries and missing OTA's. This year, he stayed healthy and had to learn a new offense. I have a feeling we'll having a superb One/Two punch in Donnell and Robinson next year with a veteran TE like Fells coming back as well. Fells will come cheap, he knows the offense now and I just don't see a HUGE upgrade coming if in fact the Giants feel Robinson will blossom.

Donnell will get better too btw.
Herzlich's mohawk should be gone
Giants2012 : 12/15/2014 9:44 pm : link
Worst looking mohawk possible.
Interesting roster,
shepherdsam : 12/15/2014 11:00 pm : link
but you have way too many kickers and guards.
Regarding Bluenatic's prediction
SHO'NUFF : 12/16/2014 12:49 am : link
we are not bringing back only 3 WRs out of the entire group for next season, especially because we don't know if VC will be back 100% and Washington is still pretty green. Randle will be back for sure because we don't lose anything by keeping him. I also vote for Preston Parker to be back, assuming he works on his route running in the offseason. Is Jernigan still on the roster?

Kuhn is safe. He seems to be a coach favorite for some reason.
The guys worth discussing at this point are in three categories:
Big Blue Blogger : 12/16/2014 3:53 am : link
1) Unrestricted Free Agents (Rolle, Pierre-Paul, Thurmond, Brown, Williams, Hynoski, Jernigan, etc.);
2) Restricted Free Agents (none of importance);
3) Potential cap casualties (Kiwanuka, Beason, Jenkins, McBride, Walton, etc.).

The third category has two parts: Guys like Beason and McBride who require immediate attention because they have new money coming in the offseason; and guys like Kiwanuka, Walton and Jenkins whose salaries may exceed their likely value.

The players who remain from the 2012 draft class are basically irrelevant to this discussion until August. They are signed through 2015, at modest salaries. Even Jayron Hosley might hang around a while, because there isn't a better use for the last spot on the offseason roster. Why cut Brandon Mosley or Adrien Robinson or Markus Kuhn? Why even think about cutting Rueben Randle?
This team isn't good enough
BigBlueCane : 12/16/2014 5:32 am : link
to pass on less then Blue Chip OL. Just look at the fact that John Jerry is still getting snaps.
RE: Rubin Randle will be on the team, that's a complete given

he has the goods (but hasn't shown it), on the last year of his contract and will be asked to be the 3rd WR. Who is the heck is cutting him? I'll agree that 2015 might be his last year with the Giants but it makes no sense to cut him before May of 2016.
Unless Eli and the coaches really, really can't stand the guy and have given up on him.
Fans tend to think that to have a good team,
81_Great_Dane : 12/16/2014 10:10 am : link
all your players have to be above average. You can win with a bunch of average guys on the roster. An average NFL player is a helluva player. But you need a bunch of very good and Pro Bowl and elite level-guys around them. The question is going to be: Where are those very good to elite players? Answer that question and you know which average players you can keep and which you need to dump.

I second that, we need better depth at WR to compliment OBJ and Vic...and this guy brings good work ethic to the table unlike another player wearing blue does.

has not played much due to injury, but when he did I thought he played well. He pulled and handled secondary blocks well. He might be a keeper, at least quality depth. Did anyone else get this impression?

Absolutely.
