Offseason Priority Numero Uno has to be re-signing JPP

NYGmen58 : 12/15/2014 4:25 pm
Obviously has to come at the right price but he's clearly earned a nice contract and think he would want to stay with the Giants. The guy has been a beast this year and silenced a lot of doubters on here. Some of the know-nothings and stat-sheet-readers on BBI criticize him but he's still a very good pass rusher and arguably the best run-stopping DE in the NFL. He's drawn attention and double teams all season and allowed for other players to accumulate sacks (especially Hankins, Kennard, and Moore).

Been talked about.

It isn't a no-brainer. But you are demonstrating that attribute.
JPP is
TMS : 12/15/2014 5:02 pm : link
monster of a DE. He may get much better in the next couple of years if he becomes completely healthy and gets some help. Very disruptive in the offensive back field and very good against the run. You never know what this team will do through, they do like to pay our players but will over pay for other peoples. Especially the ones who are injured all the time as soon as we sign them
He was a great player for us
CaLLaHaN : 12/15/2014 6:15 pm : link
But he doesnt put up enough sacks/pressure for the price he will command this offseason. I doubt he will come back some team will spend really big on him.

I think this kind of proves my point about perception (casual fans that read box scores) versus reality (knowledgeable fans who re-watch every game and understand X's and O's).

JPP's value is that he is so much more than a pass-rusher. I could be wrong, but I believe he has more tackles and tackles for losses than any DE in the NFL (at least he did a few weeks ago and it wasn't close). He is a superior run-stopper and the best player on our defense (DRC a close second).

JPP will go the team that puts up the biggest $
Bold Ruler : Mod : 12/15/2014 6:44 pm : link
I expect and hope that will not be the Giants.
I'd rather give that money
eleven : 12/15/2014 6:47 pm : link
To Suh. He is a disruptor up the middle and just a beast. I like JPP but he is a great run stuffer who doesn't really get to the QB anymore. Worth keeping at a good price but not willing to break the bank for him.
The fact that JPP will be a perfect fit
Lowell.. : 12/15/2014 6:53 pm : link
in a 3-4 defense as well as a 4-3 suggests there will be lots of bidders. The odds are that someone will outbid the Gmen.
I agree with Lowell
mrvax : 12/15/2014 6:58 pm : link
that the Giants could easily see themselves outbid. Slapping the franchise tag on JPP is not a far-fetched idea. It's better to do that than to give him away for free.
Even the franchise tag would eat up a huge amount of money next year.
Bold Ruler : Mod : 12/15/2014 7:02 pm : link
letting him walk isn't free, it results in a lot of cap space that this team, frankly, needs.
I would counter that the
section125 : 12/15/2014 7:03 pm : link
Numero Uno proirity is building an offensive line that will protect Eli and create running lanes for the running backs.

JPP is second to that and only at a reasonable price.

diable : 12/15/2014 7:12 pm : link
JPP already has more sacks than M.Strahan did.

Best thing that could happen for the Giants is to re-sign JPP. If I'm JPP one of my demands would be conditional to getting a new DC.

While that's true, it misrepresents things quite a bit. Strahan's 5th season was his best (to date). JPP's fifth season is 3 years removed from his best. Fortunately he's looked better this year than the past few, but nonetheless his career success to date is heavily weighted towards his 2nd season, so looking at total numbers paints a very incomplete picture.
Section 125
geelabee : 12/15/2014 7:27 pm : link
If you want to improve the OL...slap the Franchise tag on JPP...they should then have a deadline on negotiations...if they can't get a long term deal in place by a set amount of time...trade him to the highest bidder for a price probably in the neighborhood of at lest 2 #1 picks...you can then use one of the picks to improve the OL...

probably the dumbest thing the Giants can do in the offseason is do nothing and watch this 25 year old stud DE...among the best DE in the NFL get 15-20 sacks per year for a team like the Dallas Cowboys...Reece should be fired if he decides the price for JPP is too high.,land he allows him to wal for nothing...
Sorry iPad auto correct
geelabee : 12/15/2014 7:32 pm : link
Reece should be fired if he decides the price for JPP is to high and then allows JPP to sign with another team wirhout getting any compensation...even if the Giants don't value JPP as much as people on this board..,I suspect other NFL teams would be lining to try to acquire a 25 year old stud DE that is scratching the surface on his potential
I agree at the right price and hopefully moving him over to LE

Mad Mike,

What picture am I misrepresenting?
I think the Giants are going to be willing to pay more for JPP
regulator : 12/15/2014 7:40 pm : link
than many of us expect... and I think that's the right move. I doubt we would be able to pay much less for his caliber of production, even though it's pretty clear that he isn't going to be returning to 2011 form. The bottom line is that he's young, productive and one aspect of this defense which is decidedly not broken. I give better than 70-30 odds that he'll be back.

I wouldn't break the bank for him. Someone will overpay for his services and Reese will let him walk. I think he'll hit the market and he'll be gone.

If you hope JPP signs elsewhere
djm : 12/15/2014 7:59 pm : link
Then you want the giants to lose one of the better players at a premium position. That's crazy talk.
His past back issue is still a concern
Grandpa : 12/15/2014 9:05 pm : link
although he seems fine now and he has disappeared in a few games but overall if the money does not break the bank for improvement in other areas I agree they should work out something to keep him in blue and turn this defense around. A D-line of JPP Suh Hank and Wynn/Moore would match up against the best O-lines in football including the Cowboys. Opponents run games would disappear leaving a lot of second/third and longs and stalled drives. Then we get to see even more of Beckham!
How do people think that we can sign JPP and Suh?
ciggy : 12/15/2014 9:15 pm : link
The salary cap makes this impossible. Especially for a team with so many other needs

One or two O line
Safety
LBs (at least one )

And possibly
RB and TE

You're not offbase, but we actually have a ton of cap room next year and even more the year after. You can make something work by backloading a few contracts.
jpp
msh : 12/15/2014 10:00 pm : link
is a no brainer he is the best run stopping DE in the nfl and has played under a weak contract his whole career he deserves to get paid and i cant believe some want them to let him walk.

reduce his base salaries and tack on sack/pressure incentives if need be that way if he doesnt get the pressure/sacks he gets less money but he has had an oft injured tuck and guys like ayers, and a declining osi playing opposite him they havent exactly given him much help to reduce his double teams or focus plus injuries of his own to deal with

signing JPP and fixing OL are 1A and 1B on the offseason priorities, along with adding help at DE/LB and getting a decent DC being 2a and 2B
Really?

He has not been a beast....

Some of the know-nothings and stat-sheet-readers on BBI criticize him but he's still a very good pass rusher and arguably the best run-stopping DE in the NFL.

Yet he can't seem to contain quarterbacks running to his side, time after time....He has one pass rushing move.....

He's drawn attention and double teams all season and allowed for other players to accumulate sacks (especially Hankins, Kennard, and Moore).

What bull....in big games he has been handled one on one.....the double team is a true myth....He, like everyone else on this defense is padding stats against the dregs of the league......even the last two games, against those two elite Qb's, Shaun Hill and Mark Sanchez, won't tell us much about this defense......but it could give us, the same mirage last year's stretch against backup qb's did....

Fact is, this defense can't stop a good passing offense....no pass rush.....can't cover backs and TE's....will screw up big time in coverage....will give up big plays, like it has all year.....

As mentioned, the number one fix for this team should be the OL....
what are they going go do

Sign eli to 20 million a year and JPP to 15?
Sign JPP or franchise tag them sign

...and forget Suh. Too much $$ and a little off his rocker. I'd go after Nick Fairley (think he's a FA) to team with Hank Jenkins and JPP. Really wish that D-Moore can break out next year...
I did hear Francesa say today that Suh might be a fit in Dallas, though...
I'm trending towards resigning him
giantgiantfan : 12/16/2014 2:45 am : link
but he's really inflating his numbers against terrible teams these last few weeks. 6 weeks ago a majority of BBI was ready to get rid of him or at least very on the fence about signing him.

Now in the last 2 games he has more sacks then he did in the first 11 games... totaling 9 sacks. He'll probably go double digit...

The reality is he has 6 of his 9.5 sacks against the 3 teams who are in the top 6 of the league in giving up sacks and have combined records of 7-35 (Washington, Jax, and Tenn).

Sure sacks aren't everything, and he is good against the run, he does get pressure other times. His other sacks came against two playoff teams in Arizona and Dallas. It will be really interesting as too how the Giants structure his deal. They absolutely cannot give him a JJ Watt type contract. They would get more bang for the buck by investing in an a good offensive linemen and a good defensive player unless they can sign him to a reasonable deal that still makes him a rich rich man.

How could Dallas afford him? They're already close to the CAP and they need to re-sign Dez Bryant.
I still have reservations about giving him primo, cap busting $$.

He has had 3 good games against garbage. When they have played good teams with above average OTs he has been neutralized.

a DE who stupid fans like me can understand and see their value in the form of sacks and tackles. I dont want to have to re-watch and analyze the 9 losses and the 5 weak wins the Giants have had this season to come to a greater appreciation of JPP. This sounds to me like all the fools who were bragging about the Giants awesome defense towards the end of last season. I couldnt hear it then, and Im not hearing it now. I wouldnt bang the table for a defense who went 0-6 to start last season, and I wouldnt be lobbying for anyone in MetLife stadium, not Coughlin, not Eli, and certainly not JPP. NOt saying they shouldnt stay Giants, Im saying that whatever they decide to do I can live with, because you get paid for results, not shit hidden in the all 22. I agree, keep the guy if the price is right, but the shine has worn off this dude, and it aint getting brighter in the future. Hey, the GIants recovered an onsides kick against the Redskins, Quinn deserves tenure.
why is Suh considered a better player than JPP?
djm : 12/16/2014 11:43 am : link
...because the grass is always greener.

Why would you dump JPP for Suh? Is Suh really a better player? I don't see it.
Is it a coincidence
Gmen in 2012 : 12/16/2014 2:06 pm : link
JPP suddenly starting playing well in 3 games against the worst teams in the NFL the last 3 games the guy was nowhere to be found the 4 games prior to the Jacksonville game. I think he had a combined 5 tackles in 3 of those games with no sacks, not fooled by this guy. Let him walk,
Suh
Glover : 12/16/2014 7:05 pm : link
is a much more relentless player. He is better.
suh
msh : 12/17/2014 10:26 am : link
suh is a headcase who commits stupid penalties the guy is a driven animal thou.i think he would need a strong locker room especially on the defensive side of the ball to keep him focused. when they had strahan and tuck in there it may possibly have worked but just cant see it working with the locker room they have now

then you have to look at the cap implications on signing him the idea of having hankins and suh at DT is an intriguing one thou and would definately give opposing offences more to worry about that just jpp so i can see why people are keen on the idea
