Odell Beckham greatness, by the numbers

Stan from LA : 12/15/2014 6:36 pm
Just one more OBJ thread for the day.

Quote:

Odell Beckham has entered rarified territory.

We might have to go back to Randy Moss in 1998 to find another wide receiver who dominated at this level in his first season in the league. Beckham was positively transcendent against the Redskins on Sunday, finishing with 12 receptions for 143 yards and three touchdowns in a 24-13 win over the Redskins.

This is some special stuff, so we decided to check in with the NFL Media Research Team to get a better handle on Beckham's heroics.

They came back with the following nuggets:

» Beckham has five 100-yard receiving games this season, the most by a Giants rookie in franchise history.

» Beckham finished Sunday with 972 receiving yards, passing Jeremy Shockey (894) for the most for a rookie in franchise history. Beckham did it in 10 games, Shockey in 15.

» Beckham has three games with at least 10 receptions, which ties him with (the other) Steve Smith (2009) for the most by a Giants wide receiver in one season.

» Beckham is the first rookie in NFL history with at least 12 receptions, 140 yards and three touchdowns in a single game.

» Beckham has 61 receptions for 866 yards and six touchdowns in the last seven games. That is the most receptions ever by a rookie in a seven-game span and the second-most receiving yards by a rookie in league history.

» Beckham is the first player with 10-plus receptions, 100-plus yards and a touchdown reception in three separate games of a four-game span.

On Sunday's edition of the Around The NFL Podcast, Chris Wesseling said the only thing that will stop Beckham from being one of the greatest players in NFL history is injury. A bold statement for sure, but watch Sunday's game tape before you tell Wess he's crazy.

with better numbers than Evans ?
He already has

more catches and yards right? The only thing Mike Evans has more of is TDs 11 to 6, but with 3 more games played also.
sorry mistake...

based on how often he puts the ball up when Beckham is essentially covered.

Many of us criticized the Seattle interception, but my guess is that Beckham had regularly come up with those balls in practice (and now in games as we have seen).

As others have acknowledged, yes it is still very, very early, but I see an LT-like potential with Beckham.

There still is only one LT and how much he changed the game; very, very few players do that and I don't see Beckham going that far. However, Beckham has the potential to be one of the truly great Giants.

As with LT, I find myself finding Beckham on the field and attempting to follow where he is going. Unfortunately, the network feed follows the ball and QB, so it's harder to follow Beckham during the play than LT.

I wish Beckham the best and hope to be dazzled by him for years to come.
I'm glad I got to witness his outstanding rookie season

Too bad the rest of the team sucked eggs.
If they both continue the pace
Big Rick in FL : 12/15/2014 8:09 pm : link
They have been on recently then yes he finishes with better numbers then Evans. He hasn't had over 50 yards in 4 weeks. He shouldn't even be in consideration over Beckham Jr for ROY. He had one huge game and then 2 good games. Other then those 3 he's had 10 games under 78 yards and 8 of those have been under 55.

Evans also doesn't see the teams #1 CB like Beckham Jr does. He beat up the Redskins, Browns & Falcons.
The best part about Beckham

Is how humble and gracious he is. Met him after the Outback Bowl last year. He was extremely nice and sat there for a good 25 minutes talking to fans and signing autographs. There was only about 15 people getting autographs. So he did not need to be there that long. He could have signed autographs for 2 or 3 minutes and been gone. Everybody would have still been happy. He asked everybody if he should stay in school or not. Everybody there except my Brother & I were LSU fans so they all wanted him to stay. He talked to us for a good 15 minutes on why we think he should go to the NFL. Talking to him about where mock draft sites were projecting him. He was genuinely interested in hearing our opinion. Such an awesome guy. At that time I never thought the Giants would take him. Sure glad we did.
It's almost time to start giving OBJ the Chuck Norris

Had 866 yards coming into skins game and then had 143 yards in the skins game, that's 1009 yards and 9 td's so far but stats say 972 yards.so what number is correct?
He didnt have 866 going into skins
BSIMatt : 12/15/2014 8:54 pm : link
Game. I think he has 866 in his last 7 games, including the skins game.
I love the stats for the most part but...

Really? Talk about trying really hard to find some stat.
The most impressive aspect of all of this,
j_rud : 12/15/2014 10:12 pm : link
at least to me, is the amount of time he missed. He leads all rookie receivers in essentially every stat except TDs and he missed the entire offseason and a month of the regular season. Most of those other guys have a good surrounding cast and they aren't expected to be The Guy. But at this point Beckham is pretty much all the passing game has and everyone in the stadium knows it. And he still goes out Sunday and has a career day.

As fans we really have been blessed with some excellent WR play in recent years with Nicks and Cruz. We were lucky to have witnessed some incredible plays and performances, like Cruz's breakout game when he torched the Eagles and Nicks simply owning Green Bay in the 2012 divisional. Toomer and Burress were no slouches either. But Beckham, with what he's doing, how's he's doing it, and how early he's doing it, it just screams "special".
you left out the most important stat (to me)
WillieYoung : 12/16/2014 11:11 am : link
he has 7 consecutive games with 90+ yds. Two more and he ties the all time record of 9 held by Michael Irvin who I despise.
I can't believe we drafted this kid

Giants needed to get lucky last April. I'd say they hit the jackpot.

Beckham will never catch Moss or Boldin but has a shot for top 5 rookie receiving seasons of all time.
BTW this is an old article but there where no strong performances last year.

LOL. I was thinking the same thing. However, no on is history has ever done that so...
Speaking of Beckham and Jeremy Hill...
Big Blue Blogger : 12/16/2014 1:33 pm : link
...how did the 2013 LSU Tigers wind up in the frigging Outback Bowl, and out of the Top Ten? The offense had Beckham AND Hill, plus Mettenberger, Landry and Blue, who have all played a lot (and pretty well) as rookies.

Was the defense that bad? Four of the starters are in the NFL, though only Ferguson has done much so far.
The lost a heartbreaker
BSIMatt : 12/16/2014 2:11 pm : link
in Georgia, the offense played out of it's mind. The young defense was shredded by Aaron Murray though, extremely close game. They looked better than Alabama for half a football game, Beckham was uncoverable(Saban himself admitted as much), and then Bama made adjustments which LSU never adjusted to. Ole Miss was just a bad game by Mettenberger against a good ole Miss defense on the road.
