By the time he's done at the WJC, his team in Quebec will have something like 25 games left, plus playoffs. There's really nothing to gain from him being there, and the Rangers wouldn't be able to get him back if they need him to fill-in during the regular season or early in the playoffs.
I think they'll send him back to juniors. He isnt going to play enough here. 25 games and the playoffs playing first line minutes are a great opportunity for Duclair. I think it is always better to play at some level vs sitting. Maybe if we rolled 3 scoring lines it could be justified, but even putting aside JT Miller (who has dominated the AHL), Duclair isnt suited to line up with Hags and Hayes -- that's a two way line, not like the Brass-BP-Zucc "3rd" line last year.
Long term there is no way we can hold onto all of our wings. I think we should either commit to letting MSL walk (bad idea) or trade Zucc RIGHT NOW. He is going to walk this summer for no compensation, just like Strals. We cannot continue to piss away assets like this.
We're in a tough spot where we're good enough that competing for a Cup is realistic, so it's worth taking a run with some guys who might walk at year end (Staal, Zucc).
If the cap goes up, we'll be alright. If not, we're in a difficult position.

I honestly don't see how 25 games plus playoffs in juniors is a "great opportunity" for Duclair when he's already demonstrated that he's capable of dominating at that level.
The WJC is a great opportunity for him. Having him along for the end of the regular season and playoffs will be far greater experience for him when he does become a permanent fixture on the Rangers.
Well, Stralman technically could have been retained if we hadn't signed Boyle.
I wouldn't sell off pieces in a year where we're still good enough to compete for a Cup. Anything that makes us take a hit short term probably isn't ideal when the window is still open for now.
Like Brett said, it's going to depend what happens with the cap. We may not lose as many guys as we think.
I'd trade Zuccarello anyway to make room for Duclair

I agree with you for the most part I just don't see where Duclairs minutes are going to come from. How can AV get him top 9 minutes unless a couple guys get hurt? We're just logjammed at wing. There's nowhere to play him. Even if you scratched Glass and Stempniak, which top 9 winger gets demoted to the 4th line to open up a spot for Duclair?
Personally, I'd move Hagelin to the 4th line for Duclair. AV isn't Torts, the 4th line isn't a purgatory for goons and scrubs anymore. He'd be plenty valuable in that role.
Nash, MSL (resigned), Hags, and Kreider are locks for the top 9. That is 4, with two spots left for: Zucc, Duclair, Hayes/Miller (possibly both; neither is clearly a NHL C), and Fast. Plus a cheap reclamation project like Pouliot or Stempniak is always a decent idea. And guys in the minors or a surprise camp from Buch. We are just too deep on the wing to retain both Marty and Zucc IMO.
I'm sympathetic to the argument that we're capable of making another deep playoff run. I wouldnt just dump Zucc. But if we could bring back a capable 3C and/or a really worthy prospect, I'd pull the trigger. We might be a bit weaker without Zucc, but we may get better at certain things depending on how we replace him. BTW, I'm super high on Lindberg -- I think he's going to be a linchpin guy as a 3C. Perfect skill set for that role.
Greg, I'm not totally opposed to that but I don't know if Hagelin would really be suited for a non scoring line where he's probably going to be playing against guys who put him on his ass more often. It would be tough.
Deej.. I'm still kind of lukewarm on Lindberg but if he did somehow become the player you believe he will, I'm not sure what we'd do with Hayes. I think his ceiling is a little too high to bury as a 4C down the road.

I'm not worried about getting him minutes or forcing him into the lineup, it's about having him experience things at the NHL level, even if it's just practices and being in the dressing room with veteran players who can help him with the mental game.
And your question presupposes that the Rangers will have their full complement of players for every game from now until (hopefully) mid-June. I'd like to at least have the option of playing Duclair if any of the "scoring" wingers have to miss a few games.
We can do better than Matt Hunwick and John Moore.
I think they are fine options for a sixth dman. I have bigger concerns about Boyle's play than either Hunwick or Moore.
I would have liked Skjei to make the jump to Hartford this past off-season with the possibility of bringing him up mid-season. Allen/McIlrath aren't overly impressive.
I agree with you about Boyle, but that die's already been cast
Where they really erred, other than signing Girardi to that extension in the first place, was in not trading Staal once Girardi signed. They were never going to keep both of them long term.
They could have kept two of Stralman/Staal/Girardi. At the time, I thought Stralman/Staal was the right option, but Girardi has played a lot better this year than he did in the playoffs.
And of course, we swapped Stralman for Boyle, essentially.
If the cap goes up enough, maybe we decide to keep Staal and lose a forward or two. I don't spend any time looking at the cap, so I can't comment intelligently on what will happen.
Seems to me the effectiveness rate of the vaccine is less than the reported 80%... granted these guys may not actually have 'da mumps. Fuckers still managed to beat Tampa on monday though (Tampa quickly rising up my list of most hated teams... 3-0-0 vs NYR, 5-6 against the rest of our division with Bishop probably out all week with injury when they have 5 straight against the Metro division)
But, still - who the hell has heard of anyone getting the mumps? I don't think I've ever heard of athletes missing games because they contracted mumps, and I've never known anyone personally who has had it. I guess it's a consequence of the reduction in herd immunity from antivaxxer shitheads.
play great vs the pens for 55 mins then stumble around and need OT to get the 2 points we earned in regulation.
play a great game vs canucks coasting to an easy win
play very well defensively in Edmonton but the offense was sluggish. Having to shuffle lines do to Brassys quarantine might have been a factor.
played much of the flames game defending in our own end despite maintaining a comfortable lead all night. Klein swept two goals out from behind Hank or this game is a dicey proposition.
Awesome to get the four straight wins but there are still areas of concern and consistency to be dealt with if we are going to make a serious push this season. Like to add I didn't get the Boyle signing then and I still don't get it or like it now.
Was reading earlier on Yahoo that the collapse of the ruble may really hurt the KHL. I've always been worried that Buchnevich may be hard to bring over because he could get star money in Russia vs. having to slog through the AHL for $65k in America. Maybe the ruble collapse will drive players like Buch over here.
Rangers as a franchise haven't had much trouble inking the Russians
there is a strong Russian community presence in NY and comparatively short flight time involved with visiting home.
We are better positioned than most teams, maybe all teams. Indeed, Buchevich would have been a #1 or early #2 if he was Paul Bailey from Ontario. But we havent had a prospect like Buchevich before, a guy who might get $1 million+ to stay in Russia.
Our previous Russian pick was Pashnin in 2009, and he did refuse to sign here to play in the AHL. Grachev (2008) was an OHLer, Cherepanov absolutely fell on signability issues and I dont remember if we were allowed to sign him as an 18 year old (we didnt). AA (2006) was a KHLer but just a 2-8-10 guy in 39 games before he came over. No one was breaking the bank on him. And before that you're back to Tyutin in 2001 and a lot of 1990s guys taken in the 3rd and after who I just dont remember.
This article about the Leafs discusses Corsi and its importance.
Last year, we were bottom five in S% (along with the Kings), this year we're fifth. We're a team that can win with a below-average Corsi with Lundqvist in net, but it isn't ideal.
Also, given the relative differences in Corsi compared to last season, I don't think it's really attributable to a change in style - I do think we're getting higher quality shots than we did last year, though, in large part due to Nash's play.
I think we'll move up, and we've been held back during our recent winning streak because we built up big leads early on. But it'd be nice to see some better numbers here. THN - ( New Window )
Anyone want to place bets on when the Leafs collapse will start?
Secondly I was on Islanders threads 4-5 years ago easily. Devils threads were rare then and more rare now. When the Devils were playing the Rags then the few Devils fans would chime in other than that they are third rate here and in the tri state area.
(The Isles are...unfortunately... legitimately good this year, I fully expect them to finish top 3 in the Metro and probably play the Rangers in the 1st rd.)
Have the Isles beat a starting goaltender yet this year?
What is it with that fucking team their past 110 games? Regulation a mere formality... just show up 2 hours late and you get to see the real action.
And speaking of OTs, CBJ and the Bob have been playing terrific hockey lately... it also helps when you get FIVE straight games now, and 6 of past 7, into the charity bonus.
How regulation wins still aren't worth 3 points remains one of life's unsolved mysteries.
The three point system makes the NHL seem a lot more competitive than it is. There are a handful of mediocre teams with playoff spots on the basis of shootout wins. Pre first lockout, the 6th-8th seeds were usually pretty weak, but now the Wild Card's can be the better teams than those in front of them merely because of the shootout.
We should be able to win four or five of the next six. Which means we'll lose four or five.

I still like this roster better than last year, and I'm sure we can make a few other moves. The playoffs are a crap shoot, obviously.

Same time as the Islanders collapse?
Every Devils fan would be mashing the "Y" key.
Things have completely reversed - 3-4 years ago there were Devils threads all the time and virtually no Islander threads.
I tried to watch their game vs. OTT last night and it almost lulled me to sleep.
God, the Devils suck.
But we're losing Stempniak. Mumps.
You've got to be fucking kidding me.
(Duclair should be playing.... fuck the WJC)
And yeah, the Devils play an extremely boring brand of hockey.
