Beckham Jr. returning punts?

kotar1 : 12/16/2014 11:05 am
Does anyone think that Beckham Jr. returning punts is a dangerous move? He is too valuable to risk doing that! Returning that punt at the end of the Skins game was just plain stupid...Special teams coach should use his head and protect our #1 asset whenever possible.

You should never put a top WR

- Antonio Brown, Julian Edelman, Randall Cobb, Keenan Allen.

Anyone think Beckham Jr should be on the bench?

Why risk having him get hurt in a meaningless end to a season?

What is he tears an ACL and won't be ready until mid-next year or never comes back?
Keep him on the bench

until we're in the Super Bowl. Anything else is too risky.
I'm still wondering why the Giants risked Cruz...

fine with him as the

steve in ky : 12/16/2014 11:41 am : link
In such obvious passing downs the other team is likely to know and will be sending a blitz. Far too dangerous to risk him just in hopes of making a big play. Put in the back up for each 3rd and long and save Eli for all the other plays. He is far to valuable for such a risk.
Just wondering what would go through the head

WEAKNESSES Adequate height. Lacks elite top-end speed to separate vertically. Could stand to polish the finer points of his route running. Inconsistent making contested grabs -- can be out-muscled in a crowd. Has some concentration drops. Can improve as a blocker. Was not an impactful punt returner. Was held in check by Florida and Alabama.

I don't if they showed it on TV, but OBJ was not originally out there on that last punt. It was DRC, then someone yelled at him to get off the field and OBJ ran back out there. No idea where the miscommunication was, but considering how fragile DRC is these days, that was the last person I expected out there.

I get the sarcasm, but that's almost the smart play. Kill a few extra seconds while the ball bounces around (granted they'd still probably have to go out for 1 snap in the V formation).
i agree 100% with you, kotar

way too much risk for little-to-no reward given the giants current situation. it's foolish.
Is punt returning more risky than catching passes over the middle?

I don't think so, but I don't know the specific stats. I think most people just equate punt returning with kick returning since they are both special teams. And there is a higher risk of injury on kick returns.

Earl Thomas, Keenan Allen, Percy harvin, Dez Bryant.

oipolloi : 12/16/2014 1:56 pm : link
It's obviously completely stupid to risk this kid in a meaningless season.

When he started returning punts. nobody realized that he would be this amazingly good and Giants were still nominally in the playoff hunt. At this point, there is no reason to continue having him returning points.

It's also especially dangerous having a rookie do it because he is more likely to put himself in danger, trying to make a big play.

He should be removed from that duty immediately.

You don't risk an asset like that for little or no reward.

Dez Bryant has returned 42 punts in his entire career
oipolloi : 12/16/2014 2:01 pm : link
and none since 2012

Yeah, let's shit on Coughlin for everything because, dammit, I'm mad we are having a bad year again!

I'm fairly certain if he put Randle back there and he started fucking up punt returns, the "Coughlin haters" would be pout in force with some happy horseshit about not playing to win or not putting players in a position to succeed.
edelman, allen, and cobb all play for teams battling for postseason
oipolloi : 12/16/2014 2:16 pm : link
Giants are out of contention. And none of those receivers are anywhere near OBJ as a talent.

Cowboys removed Dez from returning punts because they did not want him injured.

Plus, you knuckleheads have not even cited your best counter example, which would be Tim Brown.

When are people going to figure out that a player can get hurt on any fucking given play?

If you're too worried about him getting hurt on a punt return, he may as well just sit on the sidelines on all offensive plays as well, because.. well.. he might get hurt!

I'm not shitting on Coughlin. I'm shitting on the "Coughlin lovers." Subtle difference that seems to have escaped your attention.

Anyone who has watched Coughlin knows that is the way he coaches. If you have Coughlin as your coach, you have to accept that he is going to run the ball and he is never going to make an exception for a "talented" player over a lesser player. He treats all players equally.

I have no problem with that.

But I do have a problem with OBJ being placed at risk in a meaningless season.

The organization should intervene and remove OBJ from punt returns. That's what Jerry Jones did with Dez.

The "rage" of the Coughlin lovers is the tendency to launch a knee-jerk attack on anyone posting something critical about Coughlin--even when that "something critical" is the product of misconstrual

Even more reason to sit them, since they are more valuable at WR... right?

Sir, your talents are being wasted on BBI. That quick wit should not be hidden on an obscure message board. Have you ever considered auditioning for film or the stage?
you can
Les in TO : 12/16/2014 2:30 pm : link
also make the argument that at this stage, why play OBJ at all, why take the risk when the games are meaningless.

#10* : 12/16/2014 2:41 pm : link
by him returning punts right now. I'm just conflicted with how the Giants seem to win out when there's nothing at stake and move themselves further down the draft board. We could really use a top ten player.

That is not the same argument at all. He is developing as a WR, gaining chemistry with Eli. His future is at WR. Not punt returner.

In general, star players do not play specials. The only reason OBJ is returning punts is because he is a young player. It was understandable at first but it makes no sense now that he has emerged as a generational talent.

Sorry, fatman, but arguing that OBJ should be removed from punt return duties is both logical and valid.

Fassel was roundly criticized by fans and media when Sehorn was injured. And while Sehorn was a fine player, he was not a generational talent like OBJ appears to be.

Plus, I don't think you actually disagree with me. I think if the decision were yours to make, you would remove OBJ from punt returns. You were just irritated by my phrasing and looking to pick an argument.
Doesn't matter if he's getting returning punts or not
Bramton1 : 12/16/2014 3:18 pm : link
When he gets the BBI Trophy at training camp, he's already doomed.
I don't agree with..
FatMan in Charlotte : 12/16/2014 3:27 pm : link
you at all. And for the record, I thought people criticizing Fassel for having Sehorn return kickoffs were morons, too.

You can't just pick and choose spots where to criticize - you can't claim Coughlin doesn't put players in a position to succeed or doesn't play rookies and all the other blather, and then also complain when he does the very things people say he doesn't.

And to say a dynamic player shouldn't be returning punts simply because of a team's record is NOT logical. If it were logical then it would be reasonable to say that no promising starter should be put in a position where they could possibly be injured if a team is eliminated from the playoffs. In essence, an argument could be made for playing ALL subs to give them experience and to keep the starters healthy for the following season. If it were logical. It isn't.

Football players are put on the field to play. you can't coach to prevent injuries and you can play to prevent injuries.
I see both sides of this argument
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/16/2014 3:36 pm : link
The Giants have had horrible luck with injuries that derail careers.

We've had too many First and Second-round picks lost due to serious injuries. Protecting your investing IS a thing. I would understand it if they took him off returns.
