Beckham Jr. returning punts?

kotar1 : 12/16/2014 11:05 am
Does anyone think that Beckham Jr. returning punts is a dangerous move? He is too valuable to risk doing that! Returning that punt at the end of the Skins game was just plain stupid...Special teams coach should use his head and protect our #1 asset whenever possible.

I think Odell has break-away potential as a punt returner

He is good at it. The "fumble" aside he is having a good year doing it so far and we need him there.

I am holding out hope that we play the Rams tough and a break-away punt return could go a long way for us!

also make the argument that at this stage, why play OBJ at all, why take the risk when the games are meaningless.

That is not the same argument at all. He is developing as a WR, gaining chemistry with Eli. His future is at WR. Not punt returner.

In general, star players do not play specials. The only reason OBJ is returning punts is because he is a young player. It was understandable at first but it makes no sense now that he has emerged as a generational talent.

understand your point - deion sanders returned punts for his entire career as a generational talent at CB; and the rewards outweighed any downside.

Fuck keeping him on the bench

I don't want him leaving his bed.

How do they get his bed to the bench with him in it?

Sounds more dangerous than returning punts.

agreed. he shouldnt have been returning a punt with 10 seconds left. Moreover he wanted no part of it and fumbled.
What the fuck does Tom Coughlin have to do

with Beckham trying to fair-catch the football and dropping it? It was obvious what he was doing there at the end of the game. All he had to do was catch the ball. He wasn't returning it.

As for the other returns - you play to win the game - you put your best players in the best spots to make plays. This is the job of the head coach. Beckham can get hurt just as easily running a crossing route or shallow cross against the grain with oncoming safeties or linebackers looking to line him up.

Should we eliminate those plays from the playbook so he doesn't get hurt? Hell, why even play the fucking kid if all of these games are "meaningless"? Ask that question of someone who actually plays the fucking game and they'll look like you're outta your gourd.

It's pretty simple stuff that some of the mouthbreathers like oipoloi just cannot grasp.

B is correct

We've been through this discussion ad nausem. I can see not playing Beckham in the last punt because it was just a fair catch job. I'd have used Randle for that.

The only argument I can see for NOT using Beckham to punt return is that it could possibly tire him for his receiver job.
My thoughts on this
GiantsFaninPatsLand : 12/16/2014 6:18 pm : link
I think that in a game normally he should be returning punts because he will be the returner of the future and needs all the practice that he can get (Because during practice he also has to practice as a receiver). In this case though there was no reason for anyone to be back there, even to fair catch it, because there was a chance that the punt could be muffed. Instead, it would have been a good chance to practice blocking a punt.
Deion Sanders did not return punts his whole career
oipolloi : 12/16/2014 6:36 pm : link
When he went to SF, Siefert removed him from punt returns precisely because of the injury risk. Next two years in Dallas, he did not return punts.

He famously was inserted in the playoffs to return punts. Hence, the difference between "meaningful" and "meaningless games."

Deion did not agree with the decision and he did go back to returning punts later in his career.

Deion was also one of the most explosive returners in history. He had 6 TD returns. If OBJ was on his level as a returner, then maybe you could justify it. So far, he has not demonstrated that.

Also, most star WRs would probably be fairly good punt returners, but most of them don't do it--because in general, it is not a good idea. This is especially true with a young player. A veteran is going to have a much better idea of when to FC. Young players make mistakes by trying to do too much.

But you all know this. If the Jets were risking a star player like this, you would all be laughing at Rex. But because it's the Giants you feel compelled to defend it.

on (unless I missed it) was that POS late hit way out of bounds and the fact OBJ almost got taken out by that sideline heater. Maybe move that shit further back off the field or put padding around it.

those who are for it don't understand field position and the game of football.

No. It's a matter of risk/reward. The risk is too great for the best offensive weapon this franchise has seen. They took Tiki out of that spot, once it was clear he was our offensive MVP. Plus, has he even been getting better than average yardage on his returns?
It is definitely NOT..
FatMan in Charlotte : 12/17/2014 2:44 pm : link
a risk/reward thing. Look at B's post. If this were a risk/reward thing then playing any meaningful player in a game that has little status would be idiotic. You'd bench everyone and play scrubs so injuries didn't get somebody. You'd never throw to Beckham or have him run more than a quarter speed while on the field to "save" him.

No matter how much people want to make this into an arguable debate, it isn't. at least not to anyone who isn't an idiot.
