NFT: Sony Hackers threaten "9/11" like attack

DanMetroMan : 12/16/2014 1:38 pm
The Sony hackers have threatened a 9/11-like attack on movie theaters that screen Seth Rogen and James Franco’s North Korean comedy “The Interview,” substantially escalating the stakes surrounding the release of the movie.

The attackers also released the promised “Christmas gift” of files. The contents of the files are unknown but it’s called “Michael Lynton,” who is the CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

“The world will be full of fear,” the message reads. “Remember the 11th of September 2001. We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time. (If your house is nearby, you’d better leave.) Whatever comes in the coming days is called by the greed of Sony Pictures Entertainment

and publicity did not help Kramer's or Jimmy the Greek's careers.

I do find it interesting how fast Amy Pascal went groveling to Jessie and Sharpton. It is hilarious and actually like cliche from a movie. She must hate them with a passion.

tweeting this am that Sony is actively considering pulling the picture entirely. Other studios applying pressure as they dont want their films in same multiplex to be hurt biz wise. One large national chain has already refused to show it. Estimated cost to Sony would be $100 mil.

It may actually be North Koreans. Most of their hackers/cyber experts were trained by the Chinese, and we know that the Chinese know hacking.
Did you not notice they type L's instead of R's?

Canceling the premiere and potentially pulling the movie
NYerInMA : 12/17/2014 12:02 pm : link
Is the absolute worst thing to do. It's giving the hackers exactly what they want! There's a big leap from hacking Sony's computer network to blowing up theaters across the country. I think people are completely overreacting to this. I think this movie looks awful but I am almost tempted to go see it now just to stick it to the hackers.

Agreed! You absolutely cannot change anything as a result of these threats. If you do it means the hackers control this country. We're going to let them pick and choose what movies we see?
Its a complex and risky situation
natefit : 12/17/2014 1:14 pm : link
for Sony. Its not as simple as letting the terrorists win.
It's more complex for Sony than it is for an airline?
vibe4giants : 12/17/2014 1:51 pm : link
Or the government?

If we starting running from freaking hackers over a stupid movie, we're pretty easy marks. What will they hack next and then threaten to blow up?

I've been really disappointed in the reviews so far, but now we'll probably see the movie just on principal. They (whomever) doesn't get to tell us what kind of movies we can make. Especially after allowing, what? Ten Transformers movies to go completely unpunished.

let me try and explain this. Movies play in multiplexes. So many other happy Xmas films for the kiddies will be in the same building. In order to go ahead and show this film dramatically increased visible security will need to be ordered - thats already been outlined by the authorities. Families dont want to take their kids to the movies to see armed guards standing around and other studios are legitmately concerned this will hurt the attendance of their films. Therefore they are exerting pressure on Sony to pull it. As well Sony has many new tech options such as on demand, streaming etc. Its not as if it would have to be scrapped entirely.
I'm not well educated in this area
Knineteen : 12/17/2014 3:03 pm : link
but hackers and "9/11" style attacks don't seem to mix. One or the other, not both.

They're planning on crashing drones into popcorn machines.
DHS and law enforcement so far
NYerInMA : 12/17/2014 3:15 pm : link
have not found these threats to be credible. Unless that changes, there's no reason for extra security or to pull the film. People are just panicking, because that's what we do in the 21st Century instead of behaving rationally.

Right. Multiplexes are much more complicated than, say, the airline industry.

That is just idiotic to kowtow to these hackers. I find it hard to believe N Korea would risk a fucking war over this by attacking movie theaters in America? Its one thing to shoot a missile in some water near S. Korea, its another to actually attack a country

I'd be curious if the government knows who the hackers are. Or can even narrow down/eliminate some possibilities.

We're led to believe NK is not the richest, most sophisticated country. So when this first happened, I initially assumed the Chinese did this as proxy way of needling US. Clearly, it's crossed that line, so I doubt the Chinese now. But I still doubt this is something NK is capable of. (Unless we've been terribly mislead about their capabilities.) So, who?

This seems like a really dangerous precedent. Feels like a bunch of crazies, foreign and domestic, have just been encouraged to decide what we see/hear by the power of their threats. Can't get much more North Korean than that.

It's being reported...
Chris in Philly : 12/17/2014 6:57 pm : link
it was definitely North Korea. Absurd to cancel a movie because a bunch of dickless saber rattlers are threatening to attack movie fucking theaters.
Supposedly Sony got pressure from Movie Chains
buford : 12/17/2014 7:07 pm : link
and other Studios because it was felt people would avoid theaters as a whole because of the threats.

This is serious shit. Hundreds of millions of dollars lost. This time it's movies, what will it be next time?

You really think they are going to risk war?

While everyone knows they are crazy, just how crazy do you believe they are?

Despite the overall joke that NK is, their cyber warfare unit isn't. They've spent a ton of money building it up, and have a few hundred guys there at the ready to put together some bad shit when they need it.

Bearing in mind, of course - that these types of hackers aren't necessary to hack the likes of Sony, who's been taken down pretty easily by amateurs in the past.

So the analysts looked at the code, and from the trail they can tell that it came from that NK unit. At the same time, the code itself is a mess - not really something up to par with what those guys would normally put together.

That's curious - it's not as if the movie were some sort of secret that they had to rush the thing out the door, but it sure looks that way. Of course, software delivery under penalty of death if you're late (take that, agile!) will do that to you.
It's not news that a multinational conglomerate corporation was hacked
vibe4giants : 12/18/2014 11:10 am : link
and as a result a $30 million movie has been pulled from its Christmas Day release? A 9/11 style attack was threatened. Stocks of the four major movie theater chains fell. Jobs could be lost.

Yeah, reading that all back, I have to agree. Nothing to see here.

Anyone think Jim Fassell will ever coach again?
