Where Does Safety Fall in Giant Off-Season Priorities

Jeffrey : 12/17/2014 8:17 am
Yesterday I asked about RB and most said while it was important to add a third RB, that need came behind adding to the OL and DL. Where does safety fall in the priorities? Rolle has been inconsistent at best with the exception of his mouth which is consistently running. What's left is inconsisttent Steve Brown and untested young players. Looks like the Alabama safety could be sitting there when the Giants pick. Too high for the position?

I know that DL is a need, but resigning JPP, along with the return of Ayers and the younger players like Wynn, Moore and Bromley at least offers some hope for improvement. Additionally, the draft is supposedly deep in linemen with GBN listing 14 DL in the top 50 and only 1 safety.

As for OL, if you assume that the Giants are set with Beatty, Schwartz, Pugh and Richburg at least for another year, they are looking for one more Tackle/Guard and depth. GBN list 11 OL in the top 51 on their current Board.
Depends on who they keep. All 3 veteran Safeties are FA after

the season. None of them are particularly good.

We need everything except for QB, punter and kicker. Where does it fall on the list? It falls in line with everything else. We have a limited number of resources so the goal should be to get the best players in here regardless of position not to try to plug up every hole in one offseason.
I'd be happy to see Landon Collins in blue.
Ira : 12/17/2014 8:26 am : link
Early picks are about getting playmakers and Collins is one at a position where that kind of player is needed.
I

would say pretty high. But I don't want Collins in the first. Too much of an in the box safety. Might target Anthony Harris of UVA or Durell Eskridge of Syracuse in the third or fourth respectively.
We'll find out pretty soon what they think of Taylor and Berhe.
Big Blue Blogger : 12/17/2014 8:34 am : link
Even if they see both as presumptive 2015 starters with Bennett as a possible backup (all of which seems like a reach), they have to restock the roster pretty heavily.

Of the older vets, I think Brown is the most likely to return. He should be much better in his second year after surgery.

Landon Collins is the top S in the draft
Sy'56 : 12/17/2014 8:44 am : link
Not sure anyone will end up being close to him grade-wise. But even he may not be good enough to warrant a pick as high as NYG will be. He is pretty limited in coverage.
One hand you get a Ha Ha Dixon

Maybe third after the lines.

Yeah, looks like a weak safety draft. If the Giants fall out of the top 10, and he's there, I might take him. If they can sign Devin McCourty in FA, they'd have a nice safety tandem.

BillT : 12/17/2014 9:00 am : link
Not in the 1st round but 2nd or 3rd round. Stevie Brown's resurgence is a oddities but they need more than that even if he returns to form.
Oddities = a plus
BillT : 12/17/2014 9:04 am : link
Auto correct! And Taylor is retuning as well so there are some oldies there but like I said I think they'll draft a safety pretty high.
it all depends if we keep PF or not
mofti : 12/17/2014 9:18 am : link
PF's defense relies too much on the safety position. in 2011 rolle, KP, and Grant was a big reason for his success. Same goes for last year with Rolle and and will Hill.

I mentioned this in previous threads, but if we do maintain PF, we will have to 100% upgrade our safety situation.

Mofti, the NFL as a whole is more reliant on the safety position than ever.

Show me a very good defense and I'll bet you that team has a very good safety(ies) on it.

You can't win without it.

Looking at the grades from PFF through 15 games, the Giants are currently starting the 3rd worst tandem of safeties in the NFL. Tennessee and Jacksonville are the other two and the Giants just played them in the last 3 weeks.
the need at safety
msh : 12/17/2014 10:09 am : link
will mostly come down to how big a contract rolle demands and whether the team feels he is worth keeping and if they feel they have enough with berhe and taylor

that stiff arm and poor effort on rg3 makes you wonder about rolle,i always thought he under performed his contract and did more talk than play too often

a top tier safety would be good but this team needs 2 OT,an OG (plus decent vet backups no more terry or brown),a MLB and pass rushing OLB,a number 2 WR,a blocking TE that can catch too i would put all these things ahead of safety on the priority list

they have better CB group than they have had in many years so that probably lessens the impact and need at safety

ours usually fall.
OK, 3 or 4 after OL DL and/or LB.
I will be very surprised if
Doomster : 12/17/2014 10:50 am : link
S. Brown is back....I wouldn't pay him 2.75M.....

He might return because of attrition.....they can't cut everyone, and Taylor is a huge gamble again, to last a season, never mind the fact, he basically has no experience.....a few quarters in preseason just doesn't cut it....3 tackles and assist for your career just doesn't cut it....

bronxct1 : 12/17/2014 10:55 am : link
Stevie Brown is a free agent, they wouldn't be cutting him.
they're making the same mistake with Berhe
SHO'NUFF : 12/17/2014 11:00 am : link
that they made with Moore regarding playing time.... especially since we have nothing to play for.
I agree.....
Doomster : 12/17/2014 11:18 am : link
Guys like Berhe and Bromley should get more playing time.....see what they can do....there is nothing to play for, other than to pad the win/loss record of TC...

Just one more win, could possibly cost us 4-5 spots....
I think high
Matt M. : 12/17/2014 11:19 am : link
behind OL and DL and right up there with LB. I think they will re-sign Rolle (hopefully cap friendly) and let the other vets walk. They are very thin at S.
Bring back Rolle
NYG4246 : 12/17/2014 11:22 am : link
Hes all over the field, yea hes dropped a few picks this year, misses a few tackles, thats part of the game. If its possible i say bring him back at a reasonable deal...3yr/$12mil? 2yr/$9mil?
I'd love to see them pick up Harris in the second or the third
Greg from LI : 12/17/2014 11:24 am : link
Decent speed, good ballhawk with solid coverage skills, can hit.
no more "projects" in the third and fourth rounds
oipolloi : 12/17/2014 11:41 am : link
Robinson, Brewer, Barden etc . . .

Those rounds are where you can find a good safety. I think the Giants had one in Chad Jones, but unfortunately he never got a chance

my guess is we keep 1 of the 3 free agent safeties
CGiants07 : 12/17/2014 11:55 am : link
probably rolle then sign a cheap vet one and draft one in top 4 rounds to go with berhe and taylor

we don't need 2 OT we need 1 plus depth
Safety
Pete in MD : 12/17/2014 12:08 pm : link
has to be a priority IMO. Rolle is aging and his play has dropped off this season, Brown and Demps are not very good, and who knows what Berhe and Taylor can do as starters. Luckily, there are a few good safeties set to hit free agency after the season like Patrick Chung, Devin McCourty, Tashaun Gipson (RFA), and Da’Norris Searcy.

Safety isn't priority in 1, 2 or 3. Harris should be available in the 4th. IMHO.

jeff, I disagree and see safety as one of the deeper positions with as many as 6 potential immediate starters available in rounds 2-4. After Collins ( and I'd pass on him) you'll see decent grades for Derron Smith, Holliman,Prewitt, Drummond, Jalen Mills, Anthony Harris,& Eskridge.

From the Sporting News on Landon Collins
