A lot of early mock drafts have us

MikeN in Ottawa : 12/17/2014 10:03 am
taking a DE in the first round. I know Colin of GBN has us taking one and I read some others yesterday that say the same thing.

How do BBIer's feel about that? I know Pat Traina has indicated that it would probably depend on what we do in free agency. I am making the assumption here that we may go after an offensive tackle in FA as there does not appear to be great talent on the offensive line in this year's draft.

I would love to hear from those who know more about the college kids and the draft to know who to watch after the Giants are done.

How many had us taking a WR last year?

The draft is a crap shoot, and draft predictions are crapshootier.
Let's assume that Kiwi is gone
Bold Ruler : Mod : 12/17/2014 10:14 am : link
Let's also assume (many of us have) that another team is going to outbid the Giants for JPP. I really don't think JPP is interested in a hometown discount, he'll go to highest bidder. So who are we left with at DE? Ayers, Wynn, Moore and Jenkins at times. While all have been decent to varying degrees, I don't think any of us would be particularly content with those 4 as our DEs, especially with Jenkins doing best at DT. I think a DE early is critical.

If it were me, I might look at DE in the 1st, Guard in 2nd and maybe Jake Ryan (Michigan) at MLB in the 3rd. Regardless, DE is going to be a need if JPP goes.

Have to hit on a big time OL.
Several important questions will be answered before the Draft:
Big Blue Blogger : 12/17/2014 10:15 am : link
1) Who's the GM? (probably Reese) January
2) Who's the HC? (probably Coughlin) January
3) Who's the DC and what kind of defense does he run? (no clue) January-February
4) What happens with Pierre-Paul? March
5) What other moves will the team make in free agency? March-April
6) How is Cruz's rehab progressing at the time of the draft?
7) Is Schwartz fully healthy by the time of the draft?
...and on and on...
DE is a need
JonC : 12/17/2014 10:16 am : link
Kiwanuka is probably gone, but is a backup at best. JPP could be gone.

The problem with this draft crop at this early stage is it appears there's no left tackle unless the Juniors declare, and the top DEs have question marks regarding best fit. Ie, they look like 3-4 OLBs.

Kind of hard if there are no Big Time OL there or worth the pick...no reaching for position, best player available..team has enough holes..
This draft has good edge rush talent in the first round.
BLUATHRT : 12/17/2014 10:27 am : link
The need and value might align perfectly.

Dante Fowler could be the pick. At 270 or so, he can hold up against the run, and is a beast off the edge. Ray looks like he might be better as a OLB in a 3-4, and Oakman is too much of a project. Fowler looks like a safer pick.

That's not how the draft works. Stop looking to the draft to fill straight up needs... otherwise you don't end up with players like OBJ
McShay has us taking the 4th ranked DE.
Dave in Buffalo : 12/17/2014 10:31 am : link
Vic Beasley from Clemson. Kiper has him 4th.

Are we picking
Doomster : 12/17/2014 10:36 am : link
8th, or are we picking 12th? Won't know until after these two games.....

to see what kiper and mcshay think?

not just because i'm not a fan of either. I think these 2 stink, but even if i'm wrong, and they are good at what they do, There is so much draft analysis out there for free. . . that is at least as good. I don't get it.
It's not too farfetched though. Figure that Kiwi is gone

If JPP gets blown away with a huge offer and leaves they will need help at DE
A WR makes more sense
BillT : 12/17/2014 11:04 am : link
With Cruz a question and Moore and Wynn on the rise and Ayers returning. We need someone to compliment Beckham and OL will be a FA acquisition. Adams or White make sense.
Not to get off the subject, but is Amukamara a free Agent?
barens : 12/17/2014 11:06 am : link
JPP is going to be one tough decision. I don't envy our front office with that one. He has really come on strong toward the end of this season, and it's tough to figure out if he's finishing out the season strong because of his competitive nature, or because it's a contract year.

Either way, in the top 10, I'm not a fan of the DE's after Leonard Williams an Randy Gregory. I don't think the other guys are going to be the best players available.
Letting JPP go would be a huge mistake
oipolloi : 12/17/2014 11:24 am : link
unfortunately cap mismanagement means they will have about 10 million in dead money next year

still, they should find a way to do it.

Yes and No. He's signed for next year but for 6.9 mil on an extension. I would expect a long term deal with him.

geemanfan : 12/17/2014 11:30 am : link
Is technicly not a free agent because the Giants picked up his 5th year option but they would still have to work out a long term deal before the 15 season starts or they would have to pay him among the top CB's in the league.

They won't have 10 mil in dead money. Kiwi is the only real dead money addition and if the cut him they will have about 6 mil instead of the 3.5 they currently have.

DE is not a "shiny toy".

It's as big a need as a good tackle. The pass rush sucks.
If we cannot re-sign JPP
mrvax : 12/17/2014 11:44 am : link
DE has got to be a very high priority. Most likely a 1st/2nd round pick and some mid-tier F.A. like Ayers.

If we can retain JPP, the Giants can go for the best playmaker again like they did grabbing Beckham. I'm almost positive they will take a DE/DT in the first 3-4 rounds.
JPP
Dragon : 12/17/2014 11:48 am : link
He could get an offer from 8-17 mil no one knows at this point but I really don't see him being worth more than 10 mil. If we only offer 10-12 mil more than likely he is gone CAP and team value. The question is does he want to stay and will he give the always talked about but seldom given present team discount.
How can you have a mock draft without a draft order?

Isn't 4 months of mock drafts enough?! Can we wait 2 weeks?
If they don't like the OL prospects
Reb8thVA : 12/17/2014 12:42 pm : link
or DL options available when they pick and Cooper is gone, I wouldn't be surprised to see them take WR Kevin Wright from West Virginia.
A DE is OK with me as long as
Red Dog : 12/17/2014 1:27 pm : link
they get a couple of quality OL prospects including at least one before the third day.

But I really want an OLT, and I think there are OLT prospects who will rise to the top echelon of prospects as the draft approaches.

OLT is not a priority. OG is more of a real need. I think they can live with Beatty and Pugh as tackles. They need at least another guard and hope that Richburg is the real deal at C.
Beckham was a need and BPA pick ...

many of the top prospects at DE (the ones available at 7-9 anyway). It's a deep position though and the Giants should grab a DE in rounds 2-4.

I think JPP is the priority resign for the Giants this offseason and I think JR will get it done.

I think Antrel goes, unless he takes a HUGE discount.
I don't think a DE would be a bad selection...
Dunedin81 : 12/17/2014 3:49 pm : link
but guys like Beasley and Ray are not prototypical Giant picks. Yeah we looked at Schofield as a "joker" before that deal fell through so I wouldn't say it couldn't happen, but we have a DE body type we like and 230-245 lbs isn't it. Part of it is simply that before bowl season we don't have a particularly good idea of who is likely to be in the running for a Top 10 pick.
Giants and Defensive Ends are like fat kids and cake,
#10* : 12/17/2014 5:12 pm : link
they can't get enough. Imo, we need a blue chip o-lineman in this draft. Pugh was never blue chip. It's time.

Of course we did. But, just like this year, it's not the BIGGEST a need. These guys that want OL or bust have no freaking clue. They'd rather take a guy that has no business getting drafted there than take the better player. But then, they cry when that player doesn't perform. The same guys whining about taking OL at all costs are the same ones whine about "reaching" for Pugh. So yeah, let's do it again, this time in the 1st! Makes sense to me
Meant to say
BigBlueShock : 12/17/2014 5:23 pm : link
This time in the top 10, not the 1st.
Again
BigBlueCane : 12/17/2014 6:11 pm : link
talking yourself out of an OL just because he isn't a blue goose LT is how we ended up in this mess in the first place.

All the really good 4-3 pass rushers in this draft are gonna be 3-4 in the NFL. 1.Beasley 2.Ray 3.Fowler

Gregory is uninspiring and Oakman is grossly overrated because he's huge
.

seriously cant take any of this stuff seriously.

we can end up with the #15 pick.

#6-#15

too early to worry about who we're picking
