NFT: Laptop Memory Upgrade Issues

NYG2302 : 12/17/2014 1:59 pm
Hey Folks,

I'm looking for some assistance with this one, because I'm at my wits end. I know that this is a football forum, but I figured that someone out there will likely know more information than I regarding laptops.

Since I'm a gamer and use my computer rather frequently, I was looking to upgrade the amount of memory in my PC.I have an Acer Aspire V3 771G-6814 model.

The motherboard on my laptop has 4 different memory slots, and I was told that the maximum that it would support would be 16 Gb.I have an Intel Core i5-3230M 2.6GHz chip, which is dual (and not quad core).

I went to NewEgg.com and purchased 4 sticks of G.Skill Ripjaws PC3L-12800 4GX2 (DDR3L-1600) 1.35V SO-DIMM to place into the machine.

After placing all 4 sticks into the different memory slots, the machine would refuse to start. The only way that the machine starts is if I use one slot on the left, and one slot on the right. The combination doesn't make a difference, but when I try and place a third stick in any slots, it will refuse to boot up.

All of the memory sticks are the same. I have no idea why this won't work. Initially I assumed that this was due to the machine only supporting sticks at 1.5V, yet it works perfectly fine with two of the sticks, which are 1.35V. I've tried all different combinations, as well as each slot independently. Each slot, when used independently with no other sticks, works just fine.

I'd REALLY rather not try and send this in to Acer, since not only is my machine barely out of warranty, but I use it for work, and couldn't be without it for a month and a half while this gets resolved.

Any ideas? Appreciate any help or guidance on this one.

Thanks.

Help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
First Off

You need to go to Crucial.com. Run the system scanner. You'll then know what exact memory you would need and how to configure. They guarantee compatibility.

If I need PC memory I always go there and have never ben disappointed.

You can return that existing memory back to NewEgg.
Could be that the new memory has a different clock rate

some laptop to upgrade to 16...
BCD : 12/17/2014 2:11 pm : link
you have to use 2 8gb and 2 slots.
According to Crucial.com
Scyber : 12/17/2014 2:12 pm : link
Your model laptop only has 2 memory slots. So to support 16GB you would need 2 8GB sticks.

Not sure what you are seeing when you say you see 4 slots on the motherboard.

It appears that the max capacity is 8GM of RAM
vulcaninvt : 12/17/2014 2:13 pm : link
This would be why it is not booting when you attempt to put in the 3rd stick.

Check out the bottom of this page where the cons are listed.

Hey Guys

Thanks for the help so far. I can send the memory that I just ordered back to NewEgg, but they charge a restock fee, which certainly sucks.

I'm on Crucial.com now and on their model information it says the following:

"Your Acer Aspire V3-771G-6814
system specs as shipped

Memory:
Maximum memory: 16384MB
Slots:2 (2 banks of 1)
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory."

Yet I'm staring at my motherboard and there are clearly 4 slots.

I'm a little baffled.

Now I'm confused, since the Crucial website says that I can upgrade to 16 Gb of DDR3, as does NewEgg where I purchased it from a year ago.
64 or 32 bit windows?
NoPeanutz : 12/17/2014 2:30 pm : link
I thnk that 32bit can only handle 4gb maximum.
Looking at the specs at crucial.com
sshin05 : 12/17/2014 2:30 pm : link
it sounds like its really only two slots are being used.

Not entirely sure why that didn't work. Take two.
NYG2302 : 12/17/2014 2:44 pm : link
I know that its hard to tell, but there are four different slots on the motherboard, two on each side. Currently both sticks are in the "back row" of both sides.

Called ACER and they are telling me...
NYG2302 : 12/17/2014 2:51 pm : link
That since I have an i5 processor which is dual core than it can only support up to 8Gb of memory, and that if I wanted to upgrade to 16 Gb, I'd need a quad-core, which is the i7...

Does that sound right? Never heard of one limiting the other.

If so, then I guess I'm stuck with 8 and it wouldn't boot because I'd be over the max.

Which seems a little stupid, especially if CRUCIAL is telling me otherwise.
Went to the INTEL site
NYG2302 : 12/17/2014 2:59 pm : link
And according to the chip that I have, these are the specs:

Intel® Core™ i5-3230M Processor
(3M Cache, up to 3.20 GHz) rPGA

-Memory Specifications
Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type) 32 GB
Memory Types DDR3/L/-RS 1333/1600
# of Memory Channels 2
Max Memory Bandwidth 25.6 GB/s
ECC Memory Supported ‡ No

Because that says 2 memory channels, does that mean that it can only support two different "sticks" of memory at a time? Therefore, if I had two 8Gb sticks that would work?
Anyone else have any suggestions?

I think you computer is telling you all you need to know at this point
vulcaninvt : 12/18/2014 9:54 am : link
it's cool with 8GB RAM but any more than that and it's no bueno.

I am not sure how experienced or comfortable you are with it, but changing out your CPU should be fairly straight forward if you wanted to bump up to the i7.

Good luck!
The explanation that Acer gave you doesn't jive
jcn56 : 12/18/2014 10:36 am : link
It could be that 8GB is the max, but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense (you'd be bound by the fact that you can only use 8GB chips in those slots, but that should still get you 8x2 = 16 GB).

I'd send the memory back to Newegg, eat the restocking (which is why I've stopped ordering from them when I can) and get it elsewhere, 2x8, see if that works for you. Those other two slots are likely meant for a different configuration (same motherboard in a different laptop with different CPU) so they're non-operational in yours.
