Looks like we had 100% on the fire Perry Fewell thread. So now that he is gone let's find his replacement. Spags is the easy choice but is he the right choice? I vote YES!!
Stray, Osi, and Tuck than good work by Spags should cough up the name of the CB starting opposite Corey Webster during the playoff run and SB win. Oh, and the nickle CB as well. Spags worked around some dog shit in his D-secondary.

It helps when you have an excellent MIKE and a very good OLB along with an outstanding front four.
We won both Super Bowls the same way. The Front 4 was humming each time. Spags had better linebackers and Fewell had better DB's.

We basically had the same players on defense. We re-signed some guys, yet our sack total went up big time from 32 to 53.
Spags did a great job here for us. He took the DL and supplemented their pass rushing ability with good blitzes.
Geoff Pope was IIRC the starting CB because Madison Â
and Ross were hurt. One starting safety was Michael Johnson, too. I don't even remember the nickel CB.
And if you paid enough attention, you'd remember that that DL didn't get heat on opposing QBs all THAT often when rushing straight 4. Spags could dial up blitzes very well, and often did.
Actually, if Coughlin returns, he'll be a lame duck Â
because of his looming retirement. Attracting coordinators MAY be more difficult in that situation (I personally think coaches don't care, they want those finite jobs) and if that's the case, Spags may be a legitimate choice.
but "excellent" as a starting Mike? errr, no. He wasn't physical, had trouble getting to the edge, and was a liability in pass coverage. I suppose he did lead the league in "pile ons after the play is over" if they keep that stat.
Seriously he was like having a coach on the field, but not much more than that.
were AP, Torbor and Mitchell. You had Michael Johnson and James Butler playing. Ross was a good blitzer out of the slot.
We had a good DL, but we maximized our potential on defense. That was fun to see. Ideally, I would love Rex Ryan as our DC when he gets fired, however, that's not happening.
I would love to see his defense implemented. I actually might start to have faith in our defense again.
You're short changing Pierce pretty bad. He was a very good player that year and he was sure as hell better than anything we've had in the middle since then. Unless you count like.. 6 games of Jon Beason in 2013.
And no, Pope didn't start. Ross and Webster did.
can we go back to Strahan and Osi and Tuck, too? Â
from the HC down. I like to call it the culture of "unaccountability" in that you can f up and still keep your job, so why strive for excellence? The only guys that are released are the chosen scapegoats.

The interesting thing about Pierce is that we were lucky to get him from the skins, I suspect that without him we do not win that first SB as we would have started some underachiever at his position. We got free talent evaluation from somebody else (Skins) at the LB position.
was his football IQ. It's not like he was athletic or some freak player. His football iQ was great and ability to get people lined up to make plays. There were times where he and the QB would go back and forth and change plays. It was great to watch.
Towards the end of his tenure BL remembers, when our fan base called him fat and slow. They made the same comments about JPP and his stomach, and ripped on AP.
But in general, AP was great for us. Not because he was an insane athletic, but because he was the general of the defense. Getting everyone lined up.

Bingo Anish, thanks.

You guys are also forgetting about Gibril. He played well for us.
He did and blitzed too. I still remember him smacking the shit out of Brady in the super bowl.
At one point we were sending everyone from different spots. This would go on throughout the game..
DL pressure
Ross from the slot
LB A gap
and Gibril the Thrill Wilson creeping in and blitzing.
It was a fun defense to watch. He basically put Webster on the map. Webster was an average CB, who Tim Lewis would berate. Once Lewis left, and the scheme changed Webster was a damn good CB for us.
Those narratives about Pierce started in 2008 until he called it a career because of that disc injury in 2009. People really weren't saying he was fat and slow in 2007 and they sure weren't saying it when he was a pro bowl MIKE in 2006 and registered over 100 tackles.
He wasn't the most athletic guy but let's not act like he was Jonathan Goff with a headset and higher football IQ.
I vote "yes" 13 times.

I guess you must mean Steve Spagnuolo. I've never heard of this Spagnola guy.
No fucking way to Rex Ryan.
What's he going to do,make him dye his hair brown and change his name to Dom.He's already trying to turn Eli into Aaron Rodgers.
Why don't you start a thread asking that question?
Geoffrey Pope or Poe
And Aaron Ross played very well as a rookie

So you are saying Pose didn't start? I don't think Madison played at all in the SB, maybe a few plays.

How many passes were caught with AP trailing in coverage over the middle, like 10 million?
And no, Pope didn't start. Ross and Webster did.
