NFT: The Russian Ruble and the KHL

JayBinQueens : 12/18/2014 3:36 pm
With the value of the ruble crashing, players who are playing in the KHL are now making much less than they thought they would be when signing their contracts.
If the league itself collapses or the players opt out of their contracts etc how would it effect the NHL?
Would all those players just immediately become free agents?

At the same time, who are the high profile players there besides Kovalchuck?
The Russians are coming!

browsing the rosters, most of the names I recognized
Greg from LI : 12/18/2014 3:52 pm : link
were either washed up (Ponikarovsky, Kalinin, Vishnevsky, Antropov) or marginal NHLers (Lisin, Marcel Hossa, Wolski, Jarko Immonen)
....

I remember thinking Jarkko Immonen was going to be a very good second liner for us.

Fuck those Commies.
We could bring Nigel Dawes back!

Matt Gilroy ...

Always thought Afinogenov was going to be a good one but like many Ruskies he showed flashes then was invisible.
Mirtle from the Toronto Globe and Mail has a good article on this

1. Not everyone would be a free agent, as some KHL players' rights are owned by NHL clubs. Rangers own Buchnevich, and may still have rights on Pashnin (who could be a 5/6 dman maybe). And our #4 pick this season may be in the KHL right now.

2. Not all KHL teams play in Russia, and accordingly not all KHL teams have salaries pegged to the ruble. However, if the league folds then the contracts may be unenforcable.

3. I think the league or teams would have to fold for the players to be free. Merely declaring bankruptcy may not be enough.

4. If this happens midseason the NHL would have to manage the transition. No way some team could just sign Kovy or Radulov for the stretch run.

this entire crisis is caused by "false emotions and speculative sentiment."
So you are saying there is a chance

I finally get to see Kiril Petrov play for the Isles.
I'd take Radulov on the Rangers

I mean he sucked in the NHL, but the guy is lights out in the KHL. Maybe we find lightning in a bottle.

Zherdev...we meet again

extra secret talks rumor...even though the NHL rules about him returning make it a near impossibility.

Is Russia doing the exact opposite of what the US Federal Reserve did with their Quantitative Easing strategy?

They have jacked up the interest rates which, if I am in Russia, would make me hold on to my cash and not spend. Consider that your money is also worth less today than it was a few weeks ago I just would hold on to everything as best I could and hope for a bounce back of the ruble.

26 goals, 58 points in 81 games in 2007-08 as a 21 year old on the Predators, a team whose five leading scorers were JP Dumont, Arnott, Radulov, Erat, and Legwand. That was his last NHL season. 18-19-37 in 64 games as a 20 year old rookie. +26 in 154 games. 6-8-14 in 18 NHL playoff games as a college-age player. So he didnt suck in the NHL. He was probably on his way to being a 70+ point wing, maybe a PPG guy.

Don't all of the GM's have to approve of a particular player coming back into the NHL before they can?

How would that work with a guy like Kovalchuk? If he was cleared to come back does he become a FA?

He plays no D though. He doesn't back check. He also has a shit attitude. He confirmed all of that when he was in the NHL. The Predators are glad they got rid of him...or rather, he took his ball and went back to Russia.

I dont know about "no D" but plenty of big scoring wings play shitty defense and no one says that they "suck". AO barely plays defense, other than trying to blow guys up. If he was a 75 point wing, believe me, teams would lineup to pay him 7+ million. There was some attitude stuff, but he was also a 21 year old kid. Personally, I think Poile is an asshole and was happy to criticize Radulov in the media when Radulov bolted for the KHL. But the Preds were never glad he left. Here is what they actually said:

Quote:
Poile said they were disappointed not to have what they feel is a world-class player and emerging NHL talent. But Poile said Radulov has not responded to their recent "correspondence."

"At some point, we hope Alex will have a desire to return to the NHL and compete in the best league in the world, with and against the best competition. We will re-visit his status at that time," Poile said.
