Victor Cruz Says Doctors are Amazed at His Quick Recovery

Anando : 12/19/2014 10:59 am
Was this posted yesterday? Sorry if it was...searched for "Cruz" and didn't see it:

Quote:
"I feel good. I'm about nine and a half weeks post-surgery, so I'm on my own two feet right now," Cruz said. "The Doctors say they've never seen someone repair themselves this quickly before. So I just want to take my time, but make it a little [faster] at the same time. But I feel great."

I never said that.

I merely have posted 3-4 articles from sports medical experts who said that Cruz's injury is career-threatening.

We had this same damn debate last year with David Wilson and I was told I was an idiot then too.
In Mike's defense, that news isn't old enough.

Give him a couple of years.
Cruz recovery
Archer : 12/19/2014 12:32 pm : link
In October I read the attached article which was very informative about Cruz's injury.
I do not know if this is one of the articles that Eric included.

However, what I found most interesting were the comments at the end of the article by David J.Chao, MD.

Quote:
David J. Chao, MD "When I was in @NFL, contributed cases to study by @Broncos docs that showed players usually recover next season after patella tendon tear."

Cruz a fave. Would love for his optimism to play out to reality, but team and we won't know for quite some time, certainly not until after next draft.
It's good to hear that he's recovering well.
Mad Mike : 12/19/2014 12:35 pm : link
But that really says nothing about whether he can be an effective player when he returns.
Didn't we count
Doomster : 12/19/2014 12:37 pm : link
on Cruz this year? Jennings? Beason? How about Schwartz? Prince? Thurmond?

Injuries are unpredictable.....but when players have some type of history of injuries, or have not shown the ability to play a whole season, how do you sink money into them or flat out count on them the following year?

We walked away from Bradshaw, Nicks, etc.....Who do we walk away from next year?

As for Cruz, this is two straight years, and this one is much more serious......do you count on him, or do you get a replacement, and if he returns, it's like a bonus....same with Beason......

...in Cruz's rehab, we could see the Giants make a play for Randall Cobb. He is a similar player to Cruz in that he excels in the slot, he's just not as explosive.
Quote:
Randall Cobb is also headed for free agency when the year comes to an end, but he didn’t get a new deal from the team. It doesn’t sound like one is forthcoming, either. Cobb said Thursday that there are no current contract talks going on with the team, something that Cobb says “is what it is” while adding that he hasn’t given much thought to what will happen after the season.

its funny how things like this work
UConn4523 : 12/19/2014 12:46 pm : link
Cruz got paid, so its far less a blow to him (and while I don't feel bad for saying this), but we may not be seeing the Beckham we are today without this injury. We may have held him out an extra week or 2, had different game plans, etc. if Cruz was fully healthy.

Rooting for a comeback for Cruz, but there's a very bright silver lining here.
I like Cobb
UConn4523 : 12/19/2014 12:48 pm : link
but i'd rather save that money for OL/DL and draft a weapon for Eli if I had to make a decision of which way to go.

Guys coming away from playing with Peyton/Brees/Brady/Rodgers scare me due to their new home likely being a less effective offense.
Any players and their doctors

is central to his game, the patellar tendon has a lot to do with stopping and planting the foot.

like Eric said, we really don't know, and of course everyone is wishing for the best.

and to an extent, I don't expect players/docs to say anything other than ahead of schedule. But I do think BBI is generally soured by injuries and thinks everything is career ending.

The odds are in favor of Cruz coming back close to 100% by all accounts. IN a few months when he starts testing the knee out we will know more, but i'll take this news as a positive.

In fairness, the chances of Cruz recovering and playing well is higher than Wilson. I was amazed at the number of people who thought Wilson would ever play again. With Cruz, I think he will play and be effective, but I think he has seen the last of his game breaking days.
My concern is that
BlackLight : 12/19/2014 1:28 pm : link
his injury will heal okay, but he'll try to run and cut on it without total confidence, end up favoring, and then hurting his other leg because of that.

We don't know that. What we do know is that Cruz said his doctors told him that his progress was amazingly fast. Unprecedented even.

Then we have people like Eric shitting on the news. It sort of is what it is...

I'm not a doctor, but there were multiple press reports based on renowned sports doctors who said this was a very difficult injury to come back from.

I'm hedging my bets on those reports.

It appears in some ways, this is a more serious injury than an ACJ injury.

So why you may want to continue to say I'm being overly negative, I'm merely relaying what was reported. Same with David Wilson, Steve Smith, Terrell Thomas, Kenny Phillips, etc., etc. You probably threw some jabs at me for those guys too.
I'm with Eric.
CT Charlie : 12/19/2014 2:04 pm : link
I'd rather be skeptical and pleasantly surprised than be optimistic and disappointed.

Besides, if you'd asked Cruz how he felt 10 minutes before the injury, he probably would have said, "Never felt better."
Fast
liteamorn : 12/19/2014 2:05 pm : link
Fast recovery and full recovery are two different things.
Cruz will neverf be "Cruz" again simply because the Giants
JohnB : 12/19/2014 2:48 pm : link
have OBJ.

Cruz was the go to guy, the money player, the one to look to in the tough spot. Now that OBJ has arrived, Cruz will forever more be the second best WR on the Giants. The Giants don't need the Victor Cruz of old.... but it would be nice :)

The general public will know NOTHING about VC's health until draft day. If Reese thinks Cruz is returning to form, he'll ignore the WR position (in relative terms). If he jumps up and takes Cooper, you know Cruz's days are done.

Eric, they were all very different cases. Different injuries, different severities, different players. Common theme? Your negativity.

of course
crick78 : 12/19/2014 3:50 pm : link
Another common theme is not one of those players listed above were the same again. Cruz may comeback better than ever, he may not. Eric isn't saying he definitely won't be the same, he is being cautious. He has reason to be cautious, going by that list of players who never made it back to being themselves. Not to mention better than ever
Randy
Eric from BBI : Admin : 12/19/2014 3:52 pm : link
Yup...another common theme was those players were in fact never the same players again too.

I'm hoping for the best, but this injury is potentially career-affecting.

GloryDayz : 12/19/2014 4:14 pm : link
we will never really know until he's back to full practice, whenever that is, training camp or pre-season. Even then, you probably have to see him at full speed in a game.

You want to call it pessimism fine, but thats the reality.

No, the reality is we don't know.

However, hearing Cruz convey high optimism from his doctors shouldn't create negativity as displayed here.

Not saying Cruz won't/can't come back. I just wouldn't bank on it.

This team needs another weapon. That's just a fact. As of now, we have Eli & ODB. That's it.

Either way the Giants need to add another receiver
NYG07 : 12/19/2014 9:05 pm : link
Randle sucks and hopefully is off the team next year. Ideally the giants add a number two receiver and Cruz can get back in the slot where he is at his best. He will see plenty of single coverage with OBJ on the outside.
The way for the Giants to hedge its bet on Cruz...
Milton : 12/19/2014 9:24 pm : link
...is to draft a WR in round 2 or 3, not a top ten pick in round 1. Preferably a receiver who is 6'2" or taller.

You don't spend a top ten pick on a number 2 receiver and the Giants already have their number 1 receiver in OBJ. Throw in the fact that it's possible that Cruz will be able to return and still play at a high level and the idea of taking a WR in the top ten becomes downright foolish.
There is no way
Doomster : 12/19/2014 10:04 pm : link
Randle is cut before next season....it's his last year on a rookie deal(all you would save is 600K), and there is always the hope in a contract year, he "gets it"...not sure he will, but he has to realize that his next contract depends on what he does next season....

Agreed. He'd have to piss off the coaching staff to the point of making an example out of him for them to cut him. But he will not be handed the number 3 job. They will bring in serious competition either via free agency or a day two draft pick. Cruz would have to be running a 4.5 forty and dunking a basketball in April for them not to.
Let me put it this way...
Milton : 12/19/2014 10:21 pm : link
If the Giants start next season with Randle number three on the depth chart, it was not a successful offseason addressing the WR position. As the number four on the depth chart, we could do worse than him; as the number three, we can do better. Unless he has some kind of Toomer-like epiphany in the winter.
Cruz may play again
SGMen : 12/19/2014 10:47 pm : link
But I just don't think he'll be 100% better next year. This is a pretty bad injury and will take time to heal from. We'll know a lot more next July when camp starts. If for some reason he is practicing every other day or something than I'll be optimistic. No need rushing him along.

This offense could have been pretty good this year if Schwartz, Cruz and Beckinham had remained healthy the whole year. We are like 14th right now with no OL and one wideout. If we had a few wideouts and Jerry was replaced by Schwartz we'd be at least 10th in yardage and points scored.
I thinmk his knee will be better then ever

natefit : 12/19/2014 11:02 pm : link
will be a challenege after such a devastating injury. Planting and cutting or jumping etc is second nature until you blow your knee out doing it. Im sure he will be spending time with the team psych as well as the trainers

Randle also strikes me as a guy who will play his best when money--in the form of a new contract--is on the line.

We all should be pulling for Cruz to return to normal
Jimmy Googs : 12/20/2014 8:11 am : link

Sneakers O'toole : 12/21/2014 1:58 am : link
wishful thinking, or pessimistic thinking, are equally useless. We won't know until we know, and neither will the people charged with making the offseason decisions that ultimately must be made without that full knowledge.

It's worth wondering what "normal" is for him at this point.
Riggies : 12/21/2014 2:38 am : link
He wasn't playing well this year before he got injured and his play had down ticked a fair amount last season too, from where it had been (and yes, I know everything went wrong last season, but his play was part of that).

If that's the player an absolutely perfect recovery is likely going to get him back to, then it's even more imperative that the Giants approach this offseason as though he only exists in cap terms and not count on him at all.
Giants Steve Smith
mrvax : 12/21/2014 7:08 am : link
said pretty much the same. It's better than Cruz saying he's having a tough go at it. I'll wait until I see him perform on the field with pads to celebrate.
