Looks like Yanks-Marlins deal may expand beyond Eovaldi & Prado. @flasportsbuzz said it would be Eovaldi and Garrett Jones for Prado/Phelps.
Andddddddd

Damn
Rflairr : 12/19/2014 1:19 pm : link
that Marlins team is looking pretty good now.
Garrett Jones fucking sucks
Greg from LI : 12/19/2014 1:21 pm : link
I know nothing about Eovaldi, but he'd better be pretty good. Don't like dealing Prado at all - our lineup was bad enough as it was.
That's actually not a bad deal...
Dunedin81 : 12/19/2014 1:21 pm : link
younger RHP with ground ball tendencies, is a back-end starter but should do alright.
Handing the 2B job to Refsnyder or Pirela...
Dunedin81 : 12/19/2014 1:22 pm : link
I'll see what the additional pieces are before I start celebrating or bitching.
Sheds some salary too

Where would they play Jones?
Jones will back up Teix...
Dunedin81 : 12/19/2014 1:24 pm : link
and maybe Beltran too.

Hopefully as little as possible, because he's an out machine

The Yankees will also be getting another player besides Eovaldi and Jones, in return for Phelps and Prado, in deal reported elsewhere.

I just don't know
Greg from LI : 12/19/2014 1:26 pm : link
Looking at his numbers, Eovaldi is probably a slight upgrade from Phelps and Jones is a big step down from Prado. Don't see the value here.
Yeah but he threw 199 IP last year...
Dunedin81 : 12/19/2014 1:27 pm : link
and his HR rate was 0.6/9
I liked Prado
Kyle in NY : 12/19/2014 1:28 pm : link
his versatility was useful too. Not seeing the upside yet.
Prado was our best infielder
bxgiants4 : 12/19/2014 1:29 pm : link
Big loss. Awful deal
I'm with most here...little bit of a head scratcher at present
wigs in nyc : 12/19/2014 1:29 pm : link
except that the payroll commitment drops the about the price of a Chris Capuano (roughly 5mil)
he also gave up 223 hits in those 199 innings
Greg from LI : 12/19/2014 1:30 pm : link
Nothing about his stats jumps out at you. I don't know what his stuff is like, so I can't say more than that, but on the surface I'm not getting a good feeling from this.

On the other hand, while it seems that they should be able to get a better deal for Prado, they just got him for Peter O'Brien so perhaps his value still isn't very high.

source: Yanks close to getting RHP Nathan Eovaldi and other (maybe Garrett Jones) for Prado and Phelps @JackCurryYES and @flasportsbuzz 1st
and while I love the idea of giving Refsnyder a shot
Greg from LI : 12/19/2014 1:31 pm : link
What's Plan B if he struggles now? Pirela, a less-regarded rookie? Not gonna have Prado around as a safety net now.
I hope this isn't a real trade
NJ_GIANTS : 12/19/2014 1:32 pm : link
I'd prefer the Yanks keep their guys.

According to @Joelsherman1, Yankees are also getting Class A pitcher Domingo German. He was 9-3, 2.25 ERA, 123 1/2 IPs, 113K, 25W last year.

arcarsenal : 12/19/2014 1:37 pm : link
Posted this in the other thread, but.. I've seen a bit of Eovaldi as a Mets fan.

Throws really hard. Touches upper 90's on his FB but doesn't generate many swings and misses and doesn't strike a ton of guys out considering how hard he throws. I think the question with him has always been whether he can develop enough secondary stuff to go along with his FB because he throws it a ton and the only other pitch he really uses is a slider.

3.37 FIP last year, still a young guy with upside.
maybe they think Rothschild can teach him something
Greg from LI : 12/19/2014 1:38 pm : link
beats me
Eovaldi and Jones
Giantfootball025 : 12/19/2014 1:39 pm : link
for Prado and Phelps doesn't seem like an upgrade at all.
Yankees must think this guy has hidden upside
Greg from LI : 12/19/2014 1:40 pm : link
That's the only way this makes much sense
Eovaldi
Phil in LA : 12/19/2014 1:42 pm : link
has pluse velo, and a plus slider to righties, but doesn't have the K's he should. Perhaps the Analytics Dept., which had the insight about McCarthy, sees something they like in Eovaldi. Domingo German is a hard thrower, too.
obligatory, *forgive me...*
wigs in nyc : 12/19/2014 1:42 pm : link
arc's report sounds a lot like a reliever.

Could this mean another starter is coming? Apologies in advance.
Or this is part of the semi rebuild
bxgiants4 : 12/19/2014 1:42 pm : link
Dumping guys that have maxed out and going w younger guys at 2nd,1st and on the mound
sounds like the kid throws hard and has upside
NJ_GIANTS : 12/19/2014 1:43 pm : link
also nice to have a backup 1st base. They announced they are going to let the rookies fight it out for 2nd base.
Kind of seconding Arc's comments
bhill410 : 12/19/2014 1:43 pm : link
He throws really hard but really doesn't have any other pitch. Remember his low home run right is probably slightly inflated by playing in the nl east at a very big park.

I kind of always thought he would be a very good reliever - that said if he can get anything out of his secondary he sits mid 90s.

That's exactly what this is and i'm 100% on board with it.
thanks arc
Kyle in NY : 12/19/2014 1:47 pm : link
interesting, figure the analytics are favorable for this guy, as Phil mentioned, and that has them enticed.
what's the point of dumping guys if the return isn't very good?
Greg from LI : 12/19/2014 1:49 pm : link
Again, Garrett Jones is worthless so Eovaldi is the only return with any potential value, and nothing I'm hearing sounds particularly impressive.
the term "Analytics Dept" in connection with baseball
HomerJones45 : 12/19/2014 1:51 pm : link
Makes me want to throw up in my mouth.

How about he's just turning 25, has MLB experience, throws in the upper 90's and there's a lot there for Dr. Rothschield.

This deal doesn't need an "Analytics Dept" to be labeled a no-brainer.
Jones is a lefty bat who hit 27 HRs in 2012
wigs in nyc : 12/19/2014 1:52 pm : link
Admittedly, I can't recall ever seeing him play, but he not might be entirely worthless.
he's turning 34 this year and the last two seasons
Greg from LI : 12/19/2014 1:57 pm : link
has posted .233/.289/.419 and .246/.309/.411. Oh, and he's horrendous in the field.
Jones has a Yankee Stadium swing
GiantJake : 12/19/2014 2:01 pm : link
He is a legitimate backup to Tex and also Beltran in RF. He is a HR hitter for the bench. Eovaldi is the basis of this trade. He's still young, throws very hard and threw 200 innings last year. That's nothing to sneeze at. Prado became expendable once Headley was signed. Give the kids a chance to compete for the 2B job. Also, don't discount the prospect German. He is supposedly a big arm and had a very nice season in low A.
Jones provides nothing but a bit of power at this point
Greg from LI : 12/19/2014 2:03 pm : link
Shitty on-base skills, shitty contact hitter, slow, shitty defender. He's terrible.
since there are a lot of WAR junkies around here (even if I'm not one)
Greg from LI : 12/19/2014 2:05 pm : link
Jones was a -1.1 WAR player last season.
German was the Marlins 6th or 8th best prospect...
Dunedin81 : 12/19/2014 2:05 pm : link
depending on who you ask. That's actually a pretty nice get. I liked Phelps too but his career high for innings was less than 160 and that was four years ago. They're going to play a kid at 2B, so on the balance this is about the team going forward. And I'm fine with that.

I guess I'm a bit tired of hearing about awesome A ball pitchers
Greg from LI : 12/19/2014 2:07 pm : link
Seems like they always have three or four hard throwing pitchers in A ball, and none of them ever amount to anything. Hard to get too excited over that anymore.

Yanks high on eovaldi and German. Plan to try refsnyder at 2B (pirela another option). G Jones is $ offset/backup

Well, they get younger and cut payroll,
yatqb : 12/19/2014 2:10 pm : link
perhaps giving them freedom to sign a SP in FA...somehow I think that this trade brings Scherzer or Shields into the equation.

I still doubt that, they don't seem to want to hand over a 1st rounder.

And Greg I get your point about A-ball pitchers, I guess they just figure the law of averages means that sooner or later one of them is going to make it.
Oh no I see Girardi inserting

Sadly that's a possibility too.
Another way to look at it...
Dunedin81 : 12/19/2014 2:15 pm : link
we dealt Peter O'Brien, an okay prospect, for Prado, and then flipped Prado and Phelps, a swingman, for a young starter and a prospect who was better than O'Brien. So that's not a bad get.
So
Zebra3 : 12/19/2014 2:15 pm : link
Headley gets hurt.
Who plays 3rd?

Pirela or Ryan. Pirela is a pretty good utility guy.
