Not sure I agree. I've never seen a player like a WR like beckham. I can't believe how good he is. He may never be this good again, be it injury or just the stars falling out of alignment by next year. But at this very moment there is not a better football player on the planet. Beckham, right this very moment is as good as any player. But things can change real quick in the nfl so just knock wood, sacrifice a live fucking chicken, pray, whatever you gotta do... Hope this guy beckham stays exactly the way he is for a long long time. He doesn't have to get better. He's already fucking perfect.

Beckham has undoubtably had an LT like impact on the entire franchise. If beckham plays all 16 we are 9-7 just like we were in 81 during LT's rookie year. And I remember that year like it was yesterday.

Again, a lot can happen but right now no WR has ever topped what beckham has done these last 10 games or so. He Iooks like an xbox controlled player.

No one is saying this guy will revolutionize the position like LT did, but beckham is perfecting his craft like few players have. LT being one one of those players....
My son was asking me something similar earlier
jcn56 : 12/21/2014 10:55 pm : link
and I agree, ODB is reminiscent of LT's rise back in the day.

They're similar in that both had to be accounted for every single play; they had the ability to take games over, and coordinators spent the majority of their time trying to negate their impact.

They were both energizing characters, with the rest of their unit feeding off of their individual performances. LT could will that defense to victory, even when he was severely injured. Given the fact that the Rams were out for ODB's blood today, he not only kept going at them but ramped it up a bit, and the rest of the offense (Randle in particular) fed off of that.

They were/are both special as physical specimen. LT was a crazy combo of speed and strength. ODB's speed is impressive, but his ridiculous coordination is other-worldly.

LT obviously did it for many years, and earned the HOF. We've only seen Beckham for a little more than half a season, but the early returns are promising.

I'm one who really never compares another player to LT, because LT literally change the game and his position, however, I'm liken OBj to him because since LT, no other player or giant player literally made it must watch and had the ability to take over in stretches since LT. Though LT..there will not be another to his magnitude, OBj is just about his level but on offensive side of ball now.

On the team, I have no doubt about that. Strahan had the same impact in his later years, Armstead had it, Jacobs and Bradshaw had it on offense. He is the galvanizer we need, the one guy who will go off and make his teammates better. He plays with intensity and it rubs off on everyone.

As for the LT game changing thing, I really wouldn't say that he can't be that yet. He's been doubled, bumped, bracketed, hit late, had inside out thrown at him, and nothing slows him down. Randy Moss you could toss a blanket over if you got rough with him at the LOS and put someone over the top but 13 runs every route like its his last and you can put him anywhere and he can beat anyone. He abused Richard Sherman and Sherman may talk but the dude can play and Beckham abused him. He's dare I say uncoverable, even when covered he can get to the ball on the back shoulder, or low or high or outside, I've never seen anyone do that. He's putting up the same numbers Plaxico Burress did in a full season with 5 less games, at 5-11 and with a shaky OL and running game.

He is the best football player I've seen on this team since LT. There is no answer for him, he is a game changer every time he's on the field. I am comparing him to LT, no doubt in my mind he's got the same impact and has the same differential talent level.

This.

Over a full season that's a ... gulp.... 138/2028/16 line.

138 rec -- 2,028 yards -- 16 touchdowns

And he's doing this as the only real weapon on his offense, the guy who the opposing defense is clearly paying attention to.

Calvin Johnson's 1,964 yards in 2012 is the single-season record. There has never been a WR in the history of this league who has gained 2,000 yards in a season, and here comes Odell Beckham playing at that level for half the season.

He's not only the runaway OROY at this point, but he's also arguably the 2nd half OPOY. He's a phenom and I hope he ends the season in style next week.
The coolest thing I've seen
BSIMatt : 12/22/2014 12:03 am : link
beyond the stats, beyond the records, beyond the highlights or even "the catch" is that there have now been a few instances of experts breaking down film on Beckham, and the common theme is that he does indeed look uncoverable, he gets so much separation on his routes/breaks it looks indefensible. Sherman had problems with it, the ability to stop start his route and change direction without losing speed is amazing.

The play where the threw the pass off the reverse, he was going full speed and the suddenness when he finally decided to stop running and throw it was insane. No slowing down, no chopping his feet, no skidding...just full speed and then an instant stop. It was like watching a hummingbird.

In the Rams game, after the safety tried to take his head off, I thought they were gunning so hard just to get a hit on him that they were due for a double move, they just had to give Eli and extra second. The very next play Beckham fakes an out route and gets the safety to bite hard and then just blows right by him, it was perfection.

I won't be shocked if Beckham makes one of the all pro teams, as a second teamer, I think he should.
I'm not gonna talk about LT, feels a little silly
j_rud : 12/22/2014 12:03 am : link
I think a more apt and recent comparison is Shockey. Just forget about the way it ended and think of his rookie year, the excitement he brought to the fans, the field, and in turn his teammates. There was a feeling that anything could happen and there were more than a few eye-popping plays like the jump ball over Dawkins. I know I haven't been head over heels for a rookie like this since Shockey's rookie year. And it's the same thing with Beckham-when he takes the field the passion is evident, often infectious, and anything can happen.
The LT comparisons have the benefit of hindsight
regulator : 12/22/2014 12:20 am : link
And the possibility of conflating LT's entire brilliant career with his rookie year. Objectively, however, the respective impacts of LT and OBJ on their teams as rookies are entirely comparable. Both players came in and were instantly among the most electrifying, dominant players in the league by year's end. Can't wait to see what the future holds...
Beckham vs LT
AcesUp : 12/22/2014 12:29 am : link
The people dismissing Beckhams rookie impact to LTs realize that we're just talking about rookie years right? Despite how dominant LT was as a rookie, there were no guarantees that he would keep up that pace beyond his first season, the same holes true for Odell. But talking rookie impact? Sort of apples and oranges but odell may be the best offensive player in football (non qb) over the last 11 games and is arguably having the strongest rookie WR season in nfl history (obviously loudest argument coming from moss).

He's special. He's 5'11, with all the benefits that come with a lower center of gravity, that can play like a 6'5 reciever thanks to a confluence of genetic anomalies. He's more dangerous than the "nfl prototype".
Comparing OBJ to LT is idiotic !!!
Daniel in MI : 12/22/2014 12:43 am : link
I just checked the stats, and OBJ has zero sacks. Zero. How can you make that comparison? You are all bags of douche.

On the other hand, OBJ is a freakin' amazing WR...LT was only OK at wideout.

He is the best rookie I have ever seen on any team (I never saw LT play). I watched this same rams team destroy the broncos and beat the seahawks. They had absolutely no answer for beckham. He comes out of his breaks faster than any receiver I have ever seen.

The things he is doing right now with no other weapons on the team are mind boggling. Every team that plays the giants plans to double/triple team him and they still cant stop him. He is going to tie michael irvin's consecutive 90+ receiveing yards streak next week and he is a rookie. To think about how good this kid is going to be in two or three years gives us great hope for another championship with Eli.

Since we have been eliminated from the playoffs I have been referring to Giants games as the Odell Beckham show, and what a show it is. It is must watch TV. Again I can't compare him to LT, but god damn is this kid unbelievably good. The Giants have a bright future ahead with OBJ leading the way.
One of the things that makes this so amazing:
manh george : 12/22/2014 1:46 am : link
He missed mini-camp. He re-injured his hamstring during the first training camp practice, and didn't practice until September 23.

How many times have we heard about a talented rookie that missing training camp and pre-season was going to ruin their rookie year? Well, he missed a lot more than that, but there was one thing he didn't miss: a step.

That's just astonishing.

No he wasn't.

The difference between these two players goes beyond checking their stats on NFL.com.

If you don't notice it, I feel sorry for you because you're missing something special.

No one ever talked about Victor Cruz the way they are talking about Odell Beckham Jr. right now.

And again, I hate to diminish Cruz because I love the guy and it shouldn't be about that but Beckham looks like the best offensive player in the entire league right now.
I just think time changes the memory
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/22/2014 8:45 am : link
it's easy to get caught up in what's happening right now as opposed to three years ago.

Cruz averaged 96 YPG in 2011, 18.7 yards per catch (a big-play machine) on only 5 catches a game.

10 games of 90 yards or more (not consecutive)
4 games of 150 yards or more

Beckham: 101.8 yards per game, 7 catches per game, 14.7 yards per catch.

8 games of 90 yards or more (consecutive)
1 game of 150 yards or more.

I would put Beckham's catch against Dallas up against Cruz's 99 yard TD against the Jets.

Again.
arcarsenal : 12/22/2014 8:49 am : link
Not a stats thing. (Beckham's pace is better anyway)

We have people comparing the impact OBJ is having right now to Lawrence fucking Taylor and it's not even a crazy comparison. No one was saying that about Cruz in 2011.

There is also no 2011 Hakeem Nicks or Mario Manningham taking attention away from Beckham. Every team is saying "we have to stop #13" going into these games and they still can't do it.

Beckham is also lining up all over the field. In the backfield, under center, slot, split wide.. he's a freak athlete doing ridiculous things on the football field.

As great as Cruz was, he was never this type of "special"
Seriously - anyone see the media attention OBJ gets?
jcn56 : 12/22/2014 9:00 am : link
You can't turn on a sports network and not get some Beckham thrown at you. It's pretty clear we're dealing with something well out of the ordinary here.

I'm hoping we're having a similar debate this time next year, except with the title 'Who's having the crazier year, Cruz or Beckham'.

Was a thing of beauty. He came on week 3 in Philly and never looked back. Memory for some gets fuzzy but I think what obj is doing is more impressive. Rookie receiver. Literally no help. Defenses key in on him and still have no way of stoping him let alone keeping him in check. Like the poster said above, he isn't the prototype size wise but his ability to play large and also small when needed is something that few athletes are ever capable of doing. He is a one in a million athlete and he is the future of the wr position. Just like lebron transformed the nba with his athleticism same will go for beckham. 5 11 with the ability to play like he's 6 4 and also the quickness of guys like harvin and mccluster. Insane athlete and it's hard to believe we finally have one like this on the giants.

I agree.

The play that stands out to me is the crossing route he took in for a TD against Washington. Ridiculous speed...it reminded me of the TD Mike Wallace scored for Pittsburgh against us in the first game after Hurricane Sandy.

Beckham just looks unusual when he's playing.
