Have the Giants had a player considered "dirty"?

Matt in SGS : 12/22/2014 9:07 am
There have been enough threads about the Rams game and the fight and the dirtbag twins (Fisher/Williams), but when you think back to players considered to be dirty/cheap shot artists over the years (Conrad Dobler, Andre Waters, Chuck Cecil, Cortland Finnegan, etc), have the Giants had any players that we can, even with our own bias, thought of as dirty players.

They've had players do some bad things at times (ie- the Bob Whitfield headbutts, but he stunk by the time he came to the Giants). The Giants hurt plenty of QBs in the 1980s, but all the hits were legal. Off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone that fit that bill.

Kenny Phillips occasionally had dirty plays, but not frequent enough to deserve the label.

to mind is Shockey. Not sure dirty is the right word though, maybe just a tough SOB.

I am sure they have though, to think otherwise is probably homerism.
Bob Whitfield, if we're counting random headbutts.

And Eli Manning, obviously.

Goes without saying.
Antonio Pierce
cm512 : 12/22/2014 9:11 am : link
A friend of a friend is a tight end in the league and apparently had bad things to say about Pierce. I think I recall him twisting a guys ankles in the pile a few times as well.
At the moment, the only player

the Giant's play in SB 25 is a good example of playing tough without playing dirty. I think that anybody who compares that with the Rams or the Buddy Ryan Eagles will see the difference.
I don'y know about phillips
Blue Baller : 12/22/2014 9:12 am : link
The only play I remember is when he layed out Graham after the Williams led def was taking cheap shots all game

Pierce I would say maybe...he always enjoyed jumping on a pile late but maybe that was just because he was so slow

You know he goes into the visitor's locker room to take a shit in their shoes during halftime. Pranker, my foot. That's just freaking dirty, if you ask me.

I think they generally avoid players like this.

Shockey?

I disagree about Kenny Phillips vehemently. He hit fucking hard Yes. Did he hit late or out of bounds? No. Did he headhunt? No. Did he take players knees out? No. Did he talk shit or instigate after the whistle? No

Brian Dawkins on the other hand was a world class POS.

A more recent example would be the Giants-49ers game on the way to the SB. That was a (clean) slugfest on both sides and I'm still amazed Eli survived.
Weston Richburg delivered a cheap shot earlier this season...

and I'm sure that many other Giants have not endeared themselves to our opponents over the years. I'd be shocked if there wasn't some Igglefan that isn't claiming that Shockey was dirty or a Redskin fan that carries a grudge for Jacobs. Such is life as an NFL fan.
Not a fact
mrvax : 12/22/2014 9:51 am : link
but I've quite often heard that Antonio Pierce was a dirty player.

Shockey?!

Sure, he was brash, played with reckless abandon and even got into some verbal sparring matches with such players as Brian Dawkins (who didn't?) but "dirty"?!

At some point it just becomes a matter of perception rather than reality. I'm just using Shockey as an example because he was brash, physically dominant, high profile, etc but that sort of player typically becomes a lightning rod for opposing fans and players who perceive those attributes and assume that they correlate to dirty play.
The giants OL
Gmen4Life21 : 12/22/2014 10:28 am : link
Diehl-seubert-Ohara-snee-Mckenzie. Had a reputation of playing a little dirty. Physical, even a little after the whistle. I loved the way they played, but they had a bit of a reputation around the league. Individually, Mckenzie probably stands out the most in my mind.
Kenny Hill
Paulie Walnuts : 12/22/2014 10:38 am : link

truebluelarry : 12/22/2014 11:23 am : link
the Giants had a blocking back/linebacker named Nello Falaschi who played in the late 1930's-early 1940's. He was tough but may have had a screw or two loose.

On a few occasions while covering kickoffs Falaschi launched himself feet first into the oncoming wedge. On one occasion he tore an opponent's leg open with his cleats, and Coach Steve Owen was very upset and pulled Falaschi from the game and told him if he ever did that again he'd never return to the field.
Who was the db #41 I think...was talented as hell
Cam in MO : 12/22/2014 11:26 am : link
but was a walking personal foul?

Cut 5 or 6 years ago I think. Played on another team and was still good for a 15yd flag every game.

The Giants do their dirty work off the field

Frank Walker? I don't think he was dirty, I just think he wasn't very bright, but he could have been considered dirty.

A lot of this i agree, is perception.

Yep, Frank Walker. I always thought he was both dumb and dirty. Could have been a really good db, tho.

I think Hosley
pjcas18 : 12/22/2014 11:42 am : link
would be dirty if he could catch up with anyone to commit a dirty play.

seemed like he was getting a lot of personal fouls when he played early on.
None come to mind
RinR : 12/22/2014 11:55 am : link
I never, ever thought Pierce was a dirty player watching him play. Over aggressive at times but not anything I would label dirty. Although I do remember him laying out Vick when he was with Atlanta at the end of run out of bounds.
I have read about Pierce as well.

I think Rolle is quietly a dirty player.
I can't remember
AnishPatel : 12/22/2014 12:41 pm : link
a Giants player considered dirty... Last dirty player or Hines Ward maybe. Dawkins.. Perhaps even the OL for the broncos and their cut blocks, but the way they high/lowed the opposing DL. Wasn't Bill Romanoswki considered dirty?
I heard that Frank Walker...

of personal fouls. Parcells used to talk about what a dichotomy there was in that guy's personality. Molecular physics major from Yale, really thoughtful guy, but in the heat of the game, he could really lose it.
I recall those comments
Randy in CT : 12/22/2014 1:16 pm : link
about Pierce. Apparently know to be late to the pile only to deliver a nice elbow.
If I remember correctly, Pete Athas

I remember that quote before the Ravens game in 2012, when the reporter asked what he thought of players calling him dirty.

He said I happen to shower everyday, and wash my armpits daily.
