OBJ greatest rookie WR of all time?

Josh in the City : 12/22/2014 9:21 am
I think it's pretty much agreed on that Randy Moss had the greatest rookie season for a WR of all time. But looking at OBJ, the numbers are pretty damn close (if not better) as to who's season was better. Below are Randy's numbers in 1998...his rookie season:

16 games, 69 rec, 1,313 yds (82.1 ypg), 17 TDs

OBJ's rookie season as of today:

11 games, 79 rec, 1,120 yds (101.8 ypg), 11 TDs

if you translate those numbers to a full 16 game season, OBJ's numbers look like this:

16 games, 115 rec, 1,629 yds, 16 TDs

So I ask, which WR do you consider the greatest rookie WR of all time? Should OBJ not, at least, be in that conversation? Of is the fact that he's only going to play 12 games what prevents that from being possible? Thoughts?

counts. There are a lot of players that could have been Hall of Famers if they could have played 10 full seasons.

Not to knock OBJ, but I don't think it's fair to prorate his stats to a full season.
I am concerned we are way over stating his

numbers. Yes, they are great and he is a great player but let's not get too ahead of ourselves. This is a different NFL than ever before. Defenders can't sneeze on you without a penalty and the league is now a pass happy watered down defensive league.

But, he is the best WR I have seen come into the NFL in a long time. Now let's get the pieces of a full offense and improve the defense and next year could be our year.
No.

I have to give it to Randy.
his numbers aren't being over stated at all
UConn4523 : 12/22/2014 9:37 am : link
relative to today's NFL he's having a monster season, and that's without the 4 missed games.

That said Randy's season is just stupid. I'm taking that season, especially with the rules 15/20 years ago. Just going off the numbers off the cuff and Moss' rookie season is likely a top 10 season for any WR in NFL history.
I understand
Josh in the City : 12/22/2014 9:39 am : link
it's a different NFL but has there been another WR who I'm forgetting that has had the same type of numbers as OBJ in the last 10-15 yrs? I can't think of any off the top of my head. I mean, even Calvin Johnson didn't come close to OBJ's numbers in his rookie season and he played in "today's NFL."
Randy Moss is a superhero.

He had monstrous stats as a rookie, but the eye test was even better.

But his stats on a per game basis weren't even close to OBJ (except the TD's which were basically even).

You sure about that? Beckham took a few late hits yesterday without drawing a flag (somehow the one obvious flag was picked up).
Yes
Les in TO : 12/22/2014 9:48 am : link
Randy Moss faced a lot of single coverage because opponents also had to deal with Hall of Famer Cris Carter, a solid running game (robert smith behind a very stout offensive line), a great #3 in jake reed and a QB that had a strong arm who could run with the ball.

Not to detract from Moss who blew passed opponents week in, week out, but what OBJ is doing is unprecedented.
Moss had Carter and Jake Reed
David in LA : 12/22/2014 9:48 am : link
Robert Smith was also a very good RB for them. However, Moss was the catalyst that took them to a 15-1 season and rejuvenated Randall Cunningham's career.
Moss' rookie season was off the charts
Giants11 : 12/22/2014 9:49 am : link
I've never seen anything like it. Literally Culpepper would rear back and throw it as far as he could and Moss would out leap 2 guys for it. The guy stepped into the league and was literally the best WR instantly or damn near close. OBJ is another elite WR in a league with a number of them.
The 4 games the Beckham missed
Mike in Long Beach : 12/22/2014 9:49 am : link
is no longer going to stop him from winning Rookie of the Year. It's almost definite he wins it, IMO.

But when you're talking about "greatest ever" conversations, you unfortunately can't put him in the mix with Moss with him missing 4 games. It nearly equally Moss' season in regards to the impact he's having on the league, but strictly from a production standpoint he can't get there.
my bad david your right Cunningham was the QB Moss' rookie year

Let me ask another question
Josh in the City : 12/22/2014 9:54 am : link
has there been another rookie WR since Randy Moss that you can compare to OBJ's rookie season?
And don't forget the era
WideRight : 12/22/2014 9:56 am : link
Even as recently as Moss's rookie year, DBs could hit more.

I will say this Coughlin needs to sit OBJ down and have a chat
Giants11 : 12/22/2014 10:01 am : link
with him. This jawing and taunting back and forth is getting out of hand. He's starting to approach DeSean Jackson levels celebrating on the 10 yard line. Don't get me wrong I'm as excited about this kid as anyone, but I'd rather see a little more AJ Green/Megatron and a lot less Desean.

WR Odell Beckham's eight receptions increased his season total to 79, the most in NFL history for a player in his first 11 career games. Beckham’s 79 receptions is a Giants rookie record. He broke the former mark held by tight end Jeremy Shockey, who caught 74 passes in 2002. Beckham extended his Giants and NFL rookie records with his eighth consecutive game with at least 90 receiving yards. Next week, he can tie the league record of nine, set by Hall of Famer Michael Irvin in 1995. Beckham is the first rookie in NFL history with at least 130 receiving yards and a touchdown catch in three consecutive games. Beckham’s two touchdowns increased his season total to 11, which breaks Bill Swiacki’s Giants rookie record for scoring receptions, which had stood since 1948 (when Swiacki caught 10). Beckham is one shy of Bill Paschal’s franchise record for total touchdowns by a rookie. Paschal had 12 in 1943 (10 rushing, two receiving).

If the numbers say otherwise on a per game basis then explain your reasoning.
The game has changed so much it is hard to fairly compare
steve in ky : 12/22/2014 10:21 am : link
For many years prior to free agency teams just did not play rookies very much but instead made them sit on the bench in order to first learn everything about the offense and then "earn" the opportunity of getting time on the field. They were properties of the team for as long as the team chose and there was zero incentive to rush rookies onto the field.

A guy like Lance Alworth is a perfect example of a young player who had a very big impact as a WR but not until year two and this was back when the defenders were allowed contact until the ball was thrown which basically is a different game from todays NFL. I couldn't imagine what type of numbers he might have put up had the defenses he faced be limited to todays rules.
Dude might end up on the new Madden...

Because it is greatest season for a rookie, not greatest season were he to be healthy all year for a rookie.

does not go to the guys head. Look how well that work out for RG3 in Washington. The guy has a real chance to be historically good....or turn into one of the more spectacular trainwrecks if he let's it all go to his head.

It sounds like he is doing some of the right things to prepare himself. I hope he stays on the right track.

To be fair, OBJ is averaging ~20 more yards per game and several more catches per game than Moss did. And is also averaging 1 TD/game.

And to those that say DBs could get away with a lot more, you should review some of the plays Beckham's made and the penalties he's drawn. DBs have been pretty damn physical with him this year.
It's far from ridiculous

To compare the seasons. Beckham season has a good chance of approaching moss' rookie year, even without four games played.

More magic from Odell Beckham Jr. The Giants' rookie phenom torched an overmatched St. Louis secondary on his way to eight catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Beckham now has 79 receptions for 1,120 yards and 11 touchdowns -- amazing production given he missed the first four weeks with a hamstring injury. Beckham is an absolute lock for Offensive Rookie of the Year and may even snag a few MVP votes. People need to understand how rare it is for a rookie wide receiver to hit the ground running as a superstar. Beckham pulled a Moss.

OBJ blows those guys out of the water in YPG: 101.8 vs 86

OBJ would rank 5th in total yards right now and should move up to at least 3rd behind only Boldin/Moss.

OBJ is 2nd behind Moss in TDs (tied with Evans and Williams).

OBJ would be #1 in catch % at 72.5%. For comparisons sake, Moss was at 55.6%

OBJ is currently 5th in receptions, but should easily pass Clayton for 4th.
