I think it's pretty much agreed on that Randy Moss had the greatest rookie season for a WR of all time. But looking at OBJ, the numbers are pretty damn close (if not better) as to who's season was better. Below are Randy's numbers in 1998...his rookie season:
16 games, 69 rec, 1,313 yds (82.1 ypg), 17 TDs
OBJ's rookie season as of today:
11 games, 79 rec, 1,120 yds (101.8 ypg), 11 TDs
if you translate those numbers to a full 16 game season, OBJ's numbers look like this:
16 games, 115 rec, 1,629 yds, 16 TDs
So I ask, which WR do you consider the greatest rookie WR of all time? Should OBJ not, at least, be in that conversation? Of is the fact that he's only going to play 12 games what prevents that from being possible? Thoughts?
Not to knock OBJ, but I don't think it's fair to prorate his stats to a full season.
But, he is the best WR I have seen come into the NFL in a long time. Now let's get the pieces of a full offense and improve the defense and next year could be our year.
That said Randy's season is just stupid. I'm taking that season, especially with the rules 15/20 years ago. Just going off the numbers off the cuff and Moss' rookie season is likely a top 10 season for any WR in NFL history.
But his stats on a per game basis weren't even close to OBJ (except the TD's which were basically even).
Moss was literally toying w the league
Not to say ODB isn't but moss was on another level at this point
But, he is the best WR I have seen come into the NFL in a long time. Now let's get the pieces of a full offense and improve the defense and next year could be our year.
You sure about that? Beckham took a few late hits yesterday without drawing a flag (somehow the one obvious flag was picked up).
Not to detract from Moss who blew passed opponents week in, week out, but what OBJ is doing is unprecedented.
But when you're talking about "greatest ever" conversations, you unfortunately can't put him in the mix with Moss with him missing 4 games. It nearly equally Moss' season in regards to the impact he's having on the league, but strictly from a production standpoint he can't get there.
So Mike Evans numbers are well behind OBJ and he played 4 more games. I don't understand the analogy.
if we had been able to center our offense around him, from the beginning...?
because with OBJ as our #1 WR we are a completely different team
If the numbers say otherwise on a per game basis then explain your reasoning.
A guy like Lance Alworth is a perfect example of a young player who had a very big impact as a WR but not until year two and this was back when the defenders were allowed contact until the ball was thrown which basically is a different game from todays NFL. I couldn't imagine what type of numbers he might have put up had the defenses he faced be limited to todays rules.

Who thinks obj is having as good a year as the 98 moss season. Obj has been great but not realizing the moss season was better is just blatant homerism, a clear bias for recency, or plain dumb.

Because it is greatest season for a rookie, not greatest season were he to be healthy all year for a rookie.
It sounds like he is doing some of the right things to prepare himself. I hope he stays on the right track.
To be fair, OBJ is averaging ~20 more yards per game and several more catches per game than Moss did. And is also averaging 1 TD/game.
And to those that say DBs could get away with a lot more, you should review some of the plays Beckham's made and the penalties he's drawn. DBs have been pretty damn physical with him this year.
He's right up there with Moss. Moss probably made more big plays. OBJ is more polished and consistent. I can't think of another rookie WR that compares to those two.
Um. Why?
And just for kicks, check out Ditka's rookie campaign (in a completely different era - insane).
Now, he needs to grow up a bit and learn to keep his composure as a competitor.
14 games - 72 receptions - 1473 yards (105.2 per)- 12 TD's
Billy Howton rookie when only twelve game schedule
12 games- 53 receptions- 1231 yards (102.6 per) 13 TD's
56 catches, 1K yards, 18 ypc, 13 TDs. Neither Winslow or Chandler were there yet. And Joiner had an off year.

OBJ blows those guys out of the water in YPG: 101.8 vs 86
OBJ would rank 5th in total yards right now and should move up to at least 3rd behind only Boldin/Moss.
OBJ is 2nd behind Moss in TDs (tied with Evans and Williams).
OBJ would be #1 in catch % at 72.5%. For comparisons sake, Moss was at 55.6%
OBJ is currently 5th in receptions, but should easily pass Clayton for 4th.
I don't think "oxymoron" means what you think it means
I'd choose ODJ over Moss any day. You can intimidate Moss and take him out of the game.
But the fact is we'll never know. And OBJ had the better rookie year on a per game basis...by a lot.
