Mike Singletary for DC.

bigGMENblue0891 : 12/22/2014 11:55 am
What do you all think?

I would absolutely love to have him as our new DC. He would bring an attitude that I think the younger guys would feed off of, and he would probably be able to find us an LB to bring in to complement what we have, and hopefully answer some questions in this group. Kennard looks like a steal and he needs to be developed properly, and I think Singletary can be that guy to get the most out of him.

Some reservations: I do think he coaches the 3-4, would that be a deal breaker? Is he going to be a head coach next year?

And, of course, we need to move on from Fewell. I've seen enough of this guy, especially against high powered offenses.
He flamed out in historical fashion in SF

Was it simply because like Rex Ryan he's only capable of focusing on the defense?
Agree re: Fewell
regulator : 12/22/2014 11:59 am : link
but I'm not so sure Singletary is the direction we want to go. Without knowing him, the perception seems to be that he has a screw loose, and there were some well-documented personality issues in SF.

If we want to hire somewhere from the Buddy Ryan universe (which we won't), give me Rex.
Hopefully Fewell is gone

although I doubt it. But if there's a change the Giants need to find a McAdoo for the defense. A young coach on an innovative successful staff that can bring a modern scheme to the Giants and that they can groom as a possible head coach down the road.

when ripping his team a new one?

No thanks.
Attitude Isn't the Problem;

defensive schemes, game plans, and play calling are the problems. And how long has Singletary been out of the game?
That
AcidTest : 12/22/2014 12:11 pm : link
would be so unlike the Giants. No.

I agree, I'm not so sure Fewell is gone either. Unless Mara and Reese pull the same stunt they did last year.
How about Mike Smith?
jeff57 : 12/22/2014 12:14 pm : link
Since he's supposedly to be fired.

Did a pretty good job as Jags DC before he became a HC.
How about Pepper Johnson?

Mike Smith is weird.

Alleged defensive guy, never had a decent defense in Atlanta.

Per Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic and Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910, Singletary’s halftime speech to the team included the fledgling head coach dropping his pants, showing the players his bare ass, and pointing to it, apparently as a visual aid to display Singletary’s belief that the team was getting its ass kicked. (Hey, it beats the hell out of studying film.)
According to the reports, Singletary then addressed the team for three or four minutes with his pants around his ankles.
heh
jnoble : 12/22/2014 12:37 pm : link
and people here talk about Fassel's off-field issues. At least his pants didn't come down in front of the team
the one thing Singetary did that seemed to work well...
jnoble : 12/22/2014 12:40 pm : link
..was when he kicked Vernon Davis out of the game and ripped him a new one publicly afterwards. Far as I can tell, Davis took that to heart and was a better player for it
He was actually drawing up the plays on his ass

Just no.
Singletary didn't seem to have
giantgiantfan : 12/22/2014 12:55 pm : link
the tact to be an HC, worried about him even as a DC after the debacle in SF.
My understanding is that he's all about that bass

Singletary? No effing way.
Red Dog : 12/22/2014 1:28 pm : link
Unqualified. Ineffective in SF.

don't make great coaches
He was the
RetroJint : 12/22/2014 5:13 pm : link
architect of much that Harbough inherited on defense. Bright guy, who cracked under the pressure of being the HC of a team with a spoiled fan base. He can coach any defense. In 85 he was the Mike in the Bear. I doubt they'd hire him but he would be a good candidate .
In four years since leaving SF, he can't even get a position coach job
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/22/2014 6:02 pm : link
in the NFL.

I would wager that he actually can't coach any defense.
I think a coaching staff of Singeltary and Fat Rex Ryan would be
PatersonPlank : 12/22/2014 6:10 pm : link
very entertaining.
He totally failed in SF

Why in the world would you want him here??
I think

His mentor was Ditka
oipolloi : 12/22/2014 9:31 pm : link
Did we really need to know any more than that?

And while he did do a good job drafting defensive players in SF, the defense got noticeably better AFTER he left
Can't

This is correct.

A good LB position coach and motivator. That's about it.
