got in his face, and the secondary is a mess. We have 4 CBs on IR, including Prince, Thurmond, and McBride. DRC was also out for some of the game, and is playing hurt himself. Really gutting it out from what I can see. Aside from the drop off in talent, there will also be miscommunications. The Rams also have some good receivers, including Austin, Britt, and Cook.

We did it against Megatron in week 1. Fully healthy in the secondary. Wide open.
You mean to tell me that they forgot to cover Calvin Johnson, the best WR in the game?
That's in year five. Injuries are not an excuse. This shit happens every year.
injuries are a factor but we gave up 7.2 yards per play. The Rams had 23 first downs, nearly 400 yards, and 27 points on 54 offensive snaps! This was the 26th ranked offense.
And by the way, that was DRC that blew the coverage...
This is why I hope the last few victories don't fool fans or the front office into ignoring the D. Fewell is, in my opinion, one of the worst DCs in the entire league. Every week, regardless of personnel available to him, the defense suffers from the same problems, often in humiliating fashion.
It is very easy to focus on the 500+ yards we racked up in offense, to go along with the 37 points. And we did it against what had been a very stingy D for several weeks. But, we should not ignore the 27 points and yardage we gave up to a terrible offense. The wide open TD was our weekly quota. I honestly don't know what to say if he isn't fired immediately after the season ends.
are unacceptable. There is no reason they should happen as much as they do and as noted in this thread it has been a trend for years.
I do not see how anyone could come away from yesterdays game thinking that the Giants put in a good defensive performance. To give up that many yards per play against that QB is a joke. After the blocked field goal I fully expected the Rams to come down for a score. Even with the time being what it was. Only their own ineptitude held them back.
The defense is the problem for this franchise and it is time to stop wasting prime Eli years and get it sorted out.
the defense routinely gives up a lead in the final minutes of a game. Often times after the offense has fought back to take it with less than five minutes remaining.
I don't have the numbers, although I'd love to see them, of how many times the defense has given up a fourth quarter lead with under five minutes to play, but I'm sure it's a lot.
point.. Our defense sucks. They ran the ball and found guys open in our secondary. Plus the usual Perry Fewell "miscommunication" and that led to a big play. You're going to get your stats up. Our defense and our system isn't any good.
There's enough talent assuming the health improves a little bit in 2015 to at least get in the way of some teams. Fewell has never really extracted the most out of this team's defensive personnel save for parts of 2010 and about 6 weeks in 2011-2012. His body of work here isn't terrible but it isn't good. Giants can do better at DC. I hope they have something up their sleeve.
The owners need to do the exact same thing to the defensive coaching staff this off season that they did to the offensive coaching staff last off season. Change the coordinator and several of the position coaches. No retreads a young innovative coach off a winning modern staff like McAdoo and several new position coaches.
RE: Additionally, although it didn't happen yesterday...

It's routine.
I think this is so true. I have no numbers to back it up but this is their identity. The D will always cough up the lead and always fail to get the big stop to win the game.
To me the most important thing a defense can do is get the key stop to secure the win. When everything else that has happened in the game to that point is moot and all that matters is get a stop, get a W.
The past five years or so the Giants defense always fails in that situation.
when the Giants had a team pinned inside their 10 yard line that the Giants defense didn't give up first downs? It's maddening. It doesn't matter if they down a punt on the 1, the other team always seems to get first downs to get out of there.
This game played out exactly how I wanted it to. Offense again showed improvement. The young players on defense showed flashes and played well, but as a whole, the defense still is terrible. Absolutely no reason we should have given up that many points to a Shaun Hill led offense.
I want the same thing to happen this weekend. Defense needs a complete overhaul from the top (save for JPP, Hankins, Moore, Wynn, DRC, Prince, Kennard) and the only way to make that happen is for this defense to keep sucking as whole.
And I think we can do better but this wasn't all on him. The dline played like shit early on and the back 7, especially the secondary was decimated. Losing Beason didn't help either.
to give D a new identity. What I find crazy is on the game thread, every time someone made a play for the Rams, it was fire Fewell! He has to be shown the door, but he didn't miss tackles or blew coverages
He didn't do shit other than get his team within 7 a couple of times and get a garbage time 47 yard td at the end to pull within 10. The one TD they got in the first half was a throw away attempt that he fucked up and got bailed out by his receiver and a PI call on a ball so badly thrown that DRC ran into the receiver who had stopped and slipped.
If we win by 10, the opposing qb can complete 100% of his passes. The League doesn't award any style points.
I don't care whether Fewell gets let go or not, but our linebackers and safeties are weak, so who exactly, do you want to cover swing passes? Herzlich? Brown? McClain?
You guys are looking for a magic scheme to cover personnel deficiencies. There isn't one.
I'd like a new approach defensively at this point but if the personnel doesn't improve, we're not going to see a ton of improvement as far as results go.
This personnel is not good enough to be a top 10 defense regardless of DC.
RE: And yet another WIDE OPEN TD on a blown coverage...
He did it again to DRC liked he did it to Webster. He picked up Rolle's guy again covering the wrong side of the field.
stevie may be the culprit for a lot of the blown coverages but he wasn't the culprit when the D pooped the bed in defending seattle's rushing attack. he was also not the culprit when the giants rushed three and had the wrong package on the field against dallas allowing romo to have enough time to sip a venti latte on his game winning drive.
Is a major need. Rolle is a 32 year old free agent. The other safeties are major question marks. If Landon Collins is the best player available when we are picking, the giants should definitely consider it.
They can change up the personnel as required, e.g, Stevie needs to be shown the door as well, but it all begins with the DC. The unit's issues are constant with PF's arrival and overseeing and injuries only tell part of the story.
The opener against Detroit when he used a lot of Cover 2 even though he isn't a cover 2 coach. It worked in 13 but he had Hill playing . The larger point there is for his defenses to be effective he needs 3 good safeties on the field. Most games he hasn't had any.
The other was the Colts. He played The Seahawk's defense : under-shift 4-3 & 3 deep . No problem there. But huge problem with his pressures mix.
Each Dallas game his unit held up for the first half then the Cowboys made the adjustments that are easy with superior personnel. First game he went heavy pressure, zero coverage so in the second half Bryant killed him. Second game he chose the slow death. He kept run personnel on the field because there was still time for Murray to run wild OK kill him. 7 seconds to throw & so forth but have you seen what Dallas has been doing to defenses?
With the injuries, they have 45 sacks about 18 picks & a third-down conversion rate against of 36 or so. And they're not the only team to face Hill. Even if Coughlin returns Perry probably won't be back. I carry no brief either way. But they need more players on defense.
is the scheme is designed to keep the ball in front of you, and not give up the deep ball. Rush 4, and drop he rest back. Theory being that the front 4 will get home because the QB will have no where else to go due to everyone covering the various seconds in the secondary.
The irony is under this DC it seems this defense consistently give up deep home run balls. It's fucking frustrating to see game after game.

The Giants DL was dominating. Hill was on the run all day. Yes, he manged to get off a few throws under tremendous pressure that there completions.
He also threw some five yard passes on third and twenty. Makes the numbers look nice. But I doubt the Rams are thinking to themselves,"Man, we really sliced and diced that Giants D." In fact, I would expect that by the final whistle, Shaun Hill had seen quite enough of Mssers. Paul, Wynn, Jenkins et al.
Missed the throws that would have given his team a very good chance to win. He got a bad break on the INT but that happens in games. Those are the same throws in this game Eli made but in many games does not. The Giants are usually the team talking about if we had made those plays this week it was the other team.
RE: And how many third down passes did he complete short of a 1st down?

I think you were watching a different game. Probably the Jets against Tom Brady.
While I'm pleased how we're finishing the season, my biggest worry is that somehow it makes ownership think that our defensive struggles was the result of injuries, not coaching. And while injuries have no doubt hurt, Fewell needs to go. Or we'll be having this same conversation next year.
Bye Perry.

He just stood there playing zone and the guy blew past him.

Plus, he is responsible for the coverages that are called.
at some point you have to realize that players have come and gone, but the defense is still mediocre or worse.
This personnel is not good enough to be a top 10 defense regardless of DC.
Bye Perry.
yup, new cast, same story. his fate was sealed in seattle but this was deadbolting the door.
Ho Lee Sh*t.
For the season, the Giants have allowed 9.4 YPA on throws in the middle of the field and 75.5% completion with 14 TD's for a QB rating of 118.6.
It was bad before the injuries. It's been bad after the injuries.
This MUST be addressed going into next season.

Goodness, he's blessed to have played 13 NFL seasons.
He also turned the ball over.
His numbers are completely normally for a losing QB in a game where he had to play catch up by passing the ball

The INT hit his WR right in the hands.
75 percent completion rate? For a journeyman QB?
The Giants got 5 hits on him all game.
We're talking about a dreadful offense with a bad QB.
