Dick Jauron for DC?

Les in TO : 12/22/2014 2:03 pm
Was an assistant with Coughlin for a number of years in Green Bay and defensive coordinator for TC in Jacksonville when they had a lot of success from 96-98. He's also been a DC with the Browns.

He has not had much sustained success as a head coach with Chicago and Buffalo (and briefly in Detroit).

He's currently listed as retired so not sure if he has an appetite to un-retire, but I see him as a logical candidate assuming Coughlin stays which from all accounts appears to be the case.

Thoughts based on those who have followed his coaching career?

No more "TC guys"

That's how we got into this situation.

as well as the roster. Need younger, fresh guys to take over when TC hangs em' up.

No thanks

No thank you. He's been out of the league for like 2 years now.
Something tells me

that I don't think Fewell is getting fired unless ownership really forces Coughlin to pull the trigger, like they seem prepared to do last year with Gilbride.
it looks
Les in TO : 12/22/2014 2:10 pm : link
like his wife is very ill, so he may not have the desire to come back even if he was asked. you never know though. i think he would at least correct some of the blatant communication breakdowns as i don't recall that ever being an issue in buffalo at least.

Good thread to get some opinions though. What are some up and coming coaches around the league that are looking to make the jump to DC?
story from a local paper from October of this year -
Del Shofner : 12/22/2014 2:14 pm : link
No, the reason the car with Ohio plates sits in the driveway two doors from my mother's is that Jauron's wife is very ill. He's not saying this, or anything about it, but everyone knows it. Somehow you just know these things in towns like this.

"I didn't plan on retiring, and I don't know what will happen next," Jauron says, "but I know I couldn't work last year, and I know I can't work right now."

----
sorry to hear this, I think Jauron is a very good guy.
Not sure Fewell goes anywhere.
giantgiantfan : 12/22/2014 2:38 pm : link
I think they give this staff one more chance to get into the playoffs.
I'd be happy to see the Giants bring in Jauron in some role
81_Great_Dane : 12/22/2014 2:41 pm : link
but I don't think DC is the right fit for him. If he were a consultant and could help mentor a DC who is moving up -- as McAdoo did -- from being a position coach, that would be a win-win.

I would not be surprised at all to see Spaguolo back as DC.

They'll use the injuries as a crutch and these few wins in a row to support it.
FeK no, Jauron...
SMitch2 : 12/22/2014 3:25 pm : link
Why would anyone want to bring in that mediocre hack? Seriously, I'm not even sure he's better than PF! Jim Haslett, Gunther Cunningham, Herm Edwards, Dick Jauron... a load of defensive innovators that bunch...
I shudder to think
blueblood'11 : 12/22/2014 3:33 pm : link
The thought of Fewell coming back does not thrill me. Then again they know the system. That ensures they would not have to cut their teeth on a new one with a new coordinator.

It's just that even with experienced players in the defensive backfield they still blow coverages and have massive communication problems. And fall victim to misdirection plays.

It doesn't seem as though Fewell is able to make the corrections needed. The talent is there. I think a guy like Spags would fit the personel. I guess we are going to find out.
looking closely
Les in TO : 12/22/2014 3:57 pm : link
at the stats of jauron-coached defensive teams seems to suggest he's a middle of the pack coordinator. in 2001 his bears defense was lights out; he seemed to do a respectable job in some difficult and challenging situations (an expansion jaguars franchise & the lions, browns and bills during their talent-starved years). stats don't tell the whole story of course, as fewell has had some good years with being near the top of the league of forcing turnovers.

if anything, i think he would keep the system much simpler and easier to understand than fewell and we would see less blatant blown coverages while maintaining somewhat of a philisophical consistency. if the idea is to make a run in the next 3-5 years before Eli and Coughlin retire, the team may not want to risk going with a wet behind the ears defensive coordinator but someone with experience.
If they bring Fewell back next year,

I'm not even going to bother with this team. I may watch here and there but it will suck all the excitement of the upcoming season out of me.

Jauron was the HC in Buffalo when Perry was DC. Jauron got fired in 2009 and Perry took over for the remaining few games.

I believe for one year they did. In '98, Jauron was DC in JAX and Perry was the DB coach. Jauron was hired by the Bears as HC the following season.

It would make sense. Fewell spent almost all of his time coaching DB's in various spots prior to getting his first DC gig in Buffalo. He's almost always been a secondary guy.

no thanks on DJ
AnishPatel : 12/22/2014 9:51 pm : link
Give me a DC who is aggressive. Therr are guys like Horton or.Bowles but they are already DCs so to bring them here would be as HCs. Not sure who would be good. Maybe Pepper johnson? He has.never been a DC though.
Pepper coaches the Bills defensive line
WillieYoung : 12/23/2014 9:15 am : link
and has done a nice job (but he has a lot of talent to work with). He certainly knows linebacker play. How much experience he has with secondary is the question.

What ever else Spags has done since leaving the Giants, he comes from an attack philosophy. His defense is, I believe, less complex than Fewell's, allowing players to focus, with less thought and more attacking the ball. This change in philosophy may, at least in the short run, correct some of the confusion and missed assignments we've seen under Fewell.

In particular, I could see Spags turning Moore into a real force as a pass rusher.

It also is more fun for the players, just look at how they've turned it on (still lacking talent) when Fewell has called a more aggressive game. Point them downhill and unleash.

They do need to infuse some talent at DE, DT, and S (not to mention LB).

Dick Jauron for DC?

Yep, I can just see his reaction when our secondary lets a WR wide open for a TD...

mrvax : 12/27/2014 11:40 am : link
but I don't think Mara is going to make any changes to the HC/OC/DC this off-season. It's upsetting when you know the Giants could do better with a different DC.

We are stuck with Fewell for 2015. I'd bet $ on it.

That's how I felt this year, my Sunday's have been much more enjoyable without any expectations of this season.
Yeah, just what we need on the coaching staff.
Dave in Hoboken : 12/27/2014 12:00 pm : link
Another guy soon approaching his 70s. Hell fucking no. Time to get some people under the age of 60 on this staff. They are out there and it actually is allowed to hire someone under that age for your coaching staff, believe it or not.
Reason I believe Fewell stays
micky : 12/27/2014 12:05 pm : link
is (if true to the speculations) if TC extended say 2-3 more years, then why change a coordinator again, where it'll likely take a another full year to learn there system so that would put 2015 in a year of adjustments. then 2016 being a year of having afull year under new D system. However, at that time, 2016 or 17 TC time being up. Thus, a new HC (whether it's MacAdoo or someone else) would likely have a whole new staff again. Keep status quo til then, the make the changes as a whole in one swoop at the time of change. It would be up and down a fruitless to keep changing and changing beforehand. jmo
Fewell's gotta go.
Dave in Hoboken : 12/27/2014 12:09 pm : link
No if's ands or buts about it.
It normally doesn't take as long to learn a defense
JonC : 12/27/2014 12:13 pm : link
if PF's contract is up now, it's time to pull the plug and start building towards 2016.
dunno why TC
fkap : 12/27/2014 12:30 pm : link
would get a longer extension this year than last, but going with the 2-3 year argument....

next year is still a rebuilding year. this is the time to install a new D IF you think you need one. if in 2 or 3 years, the team is turned around, TC either stays, or it increases the likelihood of hiring from within. hiring from within typically has less turnover, so you're not starting from scratch. if the team doesn't turn around, it's likely a whole new regime. So, you've got to go with whatever you think is likely to bring you success within a two/three year period. The only reason to renew Fewell is if you think he's conducive to success. We've already gone the route of keeping an ugly team in the desperate hopes of having one more glory run. Now is the time to improve the team. Status quo won't get it done.
also, remember continuity is a Giants way of doing things
