So apparantly OBJ is kind of a dick

Doom5 : 12/22/2014 7:10 pm
So I heard this from someone I trust, but as always with internet gossip, take it or leave it.

OBJ visited the Poughkeepsie Galleria last week for a St. Jude's charity fund raising autograph signing session. Apparently OBJ signed the contract back in the summer before he became the star he is now so it wasn't a lot of money.

So he showed up to the signing an hour and a half late and wasn't happy being there. He apparently charges a hell of a lot more now that he's a star. He wouldn't talk to anyone, only signed autographs. He wouldn't take pictures as he said his appearance fee didn't cover that and he wanted more money. He also wouldn't sign pictures of his infamous catch -- he wanted more money for that as well. He took a picture with a pop warner team that he'd previously agreed to, but didn't even make an effort to smile during the photo. He was just plain unpleasant.

I love what OBJ does on the field and am glad he's a giant. But it looks like character wise, he's kind of a prick. He's no Victor Cruz, Michael Strahan, Eli, etc.

Disappointing if true

Is it common for athlete to get paid to attend a charity event?
Couldn't be further from the truth
Big Rick in FL : 12/22/2014 7:15 pm : link
He is an extremely nice person. Sat and talked with me and my Brother for a good 10 minutes. Signed autographs for everybody. This was after the LSU bowl game and I met him in Jacksonville. Equally as nice, but didn't have as much free time as they have a schedule when they are on the road.
It's normal for people to get dickish and entitled

when they get famous. We see it in entertainment all the time. After around 18 months a lot of them come back to Earth. But some people just stay dickish and entitled pretty much for good.
The kid literally is

an overnight sensation so I can see some of it going to his head. NY/NJ hasnt seen athlete of his like in quite some time so ya he probably has a little growing up to do. He is what 21? He'll learn.

Strahan is the biggest cocksucker you will ever meet. Don't let his nice act on TV fool you. I've met Strahan plenty of times and he has been a dick every single time. Bitched at me and told me he sees me everyday so he knows I'm selling them. No Mike I live in Florida and this is my first time at training camp.

Odell probably couldn't sign his catch photo, because he agreed to a deal with Steiner Sports for it. Eli has the contract, Cruz does and so did Shockey. They were not allowed to sign certain things.
A little adversity may change him
Jupiter : 12/22/2014 7:21 pm : link
Hold your breath and hope that a bit of minor adversity will be enough.

Coughlin and Manning have already commented on trying to keep his head from blowing up.

I was at the galleria for this signing. he signed my picture of the catch and took a picture with me and my fiancé. They blasted hip hop during the signing so you really couldn't hear anything anyway. He took pictures for everyone there.

He was definitely late as far as I could tell but the other stuff just isn't true at all. And he was coming from practice all the way up to the galleria in Poughkeepsie. It was not the greatest organization for one of these things but he was no worse than any other athlete I've ever seen at a signing.

Def could have been way cooler then. Sapp was very nice early in his career. Turned into a complete dick. I've met basically any athlete you can imagine. Jordan, Gretzky, Favre, Marino, Lemuiex, LeBron, Rice.

The top 5 biggest assholes I've ever met are Favre, Sapp, Strahan, Emmet Smith & Aaron Rodgers. Trust me I have saying it, because I loved Strahan on the field. This was in 2004 in Eli's first year. He literally yelled at me at training camp. I was 14 years old. Also met him at the Super Bowl in Tampa in 2001. Kerry Collins & Tiki both signed a hat and a card for me. Strahan ignored me like I didn't exist.

I've got a funny Strahan story. 2003 or so, the Giants signed my college roommate to a training camp deal. He was a defensive lineman on the UNLV football team, Ahmad Miller.

Anyhow, my parents and I went to training camp one weekend to surprise Ahmad and wish him luck with making the Giants. So at the end of practice, he is walking off the field and we're making noise trying to get a hold of Ahmad who is walking off the field next to Strahan. Strahan looks over at us and starts to come over, so my mom goes, "Not you, Strahan, we were looking for Ahmad." So I said, "Great, Mom, you've just dissed the best player on the defense, Ahmad here will probably be cut by the end of the day now." Everyone cracks up, Ahmad makes it until after the 3rd preseason game and gets cut.
You guys are believing this guy's

After SF won the NFC Championship two years ago, Strahan went to a restaurant where my father was and sat at a table nxt to him. My father said people were waving and cheering for him and he politely waved and smile at everyone. After my dad ate, he couldnt help resist to go his table to tell him how big of a Giants/Strahan fan he was and wished him good luck when it came to the HOF. Strahan shook his hand, smiled, and thanked him for the kinds words.

Eli is great, Tiki was extremely nice, LT is pretty good to his fans, Jacobs is too. If there is even a possibility I could say something good about them I will.

Met Shockey in 2003 in Tampa. He was a complete dick head. Met him a few years later at training camp and an event in Miami. Extremely nice both times.

bc4life : 12/22/2014 7:59 pm : link
Byron Hunt, Pepper Johnson, and the late Brad Van Pelt were all great when I met them. Stephen Baker was great.

Zeke Mowatt was a douche.

The 2nd coolest thing I ever saw from a pro was Jason Sehorn. That season he tore his hamstring. Couldn't practice. Tried to run near the end of practice and couldn't. He got so pissed he threw his hat off and left out of the other exit in the opposite direction of the rest of the team. You could tell he was super pissed. He starts storming off. A few kids see him and realize they have an opportunity for a handful of them to meet JS and get autographs. Well, I thought this is going to be interesting because he's had a bad day and he's pissed. Kids catch up to him, he spins around and you would have thought it was the best day of his life. He was so cool and friendly to those kids. Complete turnaround. Thought man, now that's a class act.
Please

This video is nothing more than the editing of a guy pissed because he didn't get the interview he was "promised." Whatever

Plenty of other people who were at the event (not heard it about it second hand from some unnamed source) said he was pleasant.

Yeah, he was late. But if anyone has been to any event with a celebrity they know these people are late 90% of the time and usually it's not their fault. It's their staff/handlers fault.

I'm with Tom Coughlin, anyone want to talk about football?

Met Strahan once ...
Stufftherun : 12/22/2014 8:09 pm : link
he was very cordial, signed a jersey and with that big gap tooth smile shook my hand. As a previous poster said, these guys are human and there are enormous demands on their time, they can't always be on.

Met Shockey and he too was very friendly. LT was not as friendly during his playing days as he was after. Perspectives change.

I will say this, Tiki was by far the most magnanimous player I've ever witnessed. After practice he stopped by the fences lining the players exit to the U of Albany athletic facility and signed every last ball, photo, jersey, etc., on both sides of the fence.

it shouldn't matter. We're just fans and there should always be a barrier of sorts between the players and the fans.

all he looked like to me was tired in that video & I did see smiles, but OBJ does not seem to be the smiley guy that say someone like Cruz is. He is still young & adjusting & he seems to be pretty intense.

I went to one of Eli's early signing gigs as a rookie & he did not look up once or talk nor were we allowed to take pictures, but you can tell it's simply because he was shy & uncomfortable.

These appearances is just a small glimpse of these players, look at Tiki, was outwardly an affable guy & well....

That being said, all I want from these players is to put out their best on the field every game

a pro athlete can do much more for charity...options that do not include the old fashioned 'show up and sign' events.

in fact, doing -events- at all may be really an option, not a must, since, like any wealthy people, they could donate money directly, or, as celebrities, lend voice or video appearances during the off season and so on.

the 'show and sign' seems like something from an earlier era.

I would not read too much into it.

A majority of celebrities you meet are likely to act in a manner a regular Joe finds off-putting or abrupt. It is what it is, these people are watched and approached and pestered constantly. Some react well to it, many do not. They're like a hot female, how many react well to being approached all day and night everyday?

I don't know why people think it's OK to bother these people. If Beckham made a mistake it was offering to go to this or any other event on his own time, because his reward for doing so was someone starting a thread calling him a dick.

These guys owe NOTHING to the "community". And the "community" certainly doesn't deserve the time they do donate.
Well, so and so was a dick to me...

Your anecdotal evidence is proof only that athletes are humans who sometimes have bad days. Maybe you were acting like a dick and just didn't realize it because you're just a dick.

this thread should be deleted

now you want him to be nice also. who cares??

first off, he signed stuff, and can't really be expected to take pics with each person, especially is 10x as many people show up than they probably planned for.

who said this was a charity event? this is a sporting goods store, not charity.

i have met strahan, he wasn't a prick to me. i have been to many training camps, and had tons of players sign for me.

OBJ is a beast, we should be happy he is a Giant, who cares if he was nice to people in a mall.

He was paid to show up to the event. He wasn't doing it solely out of the goodness of his heart.
I'm with Jay on this one

You're probably thinking about someone else. I've met a few through a buddy of mine in that industry, but nothing crazy.

Infamous means famous scumbag.
Like in FDRs speech about Pearl Harbor when he announced we were at war with Japan started "Yesterday, December 7th,a day that will live in Infamy"...

Infamy and infamous are not good things to be. Hitler is infamous.Think Jeffrey Dahmer.

I did wait tables down in DC and encountered a few well known people. Not Tom Gordon though. Must have been another BBIer.

signing at the steamtown mall in scranton, pa tonight and from what im reading it did not go very well. Showed up over 90 minutes late, left early, wouldn't take pictures, etc. I wasn't there so it's not 1st hand information, paying for someones autograph is not something that appeals to me and the promoters and organizers of these events really creep me out. I guess the guy running it was a real slime and was letting people cut the line if they paid more.

one of the things you notice is how big the ego is on pretty much every one of them. Even his grandma came off a little cocky.

Wouldn't shock me if he did have a bit of an ego on him, especially since his rise to fame has been so damn fast. Who was the last non-QB to become one of the most popular players in the game within the first 8 games of his career?

I mean I care a little bit if my favorite athlete is a good person or a dick. So I hope Beckham matures a little. But being a bit of a dick during autograph sessions doesn't really matter to me if keeps on playing like a star.

I think Eli is a great presence for him and will help make sure he stays on the right path.
I don't give a rat's arse how big his ego is or how much of a schmuck
BlueLou : 12/31/2014 2:42 am : link
he might be, so long as it doesn't keep him from working his ass off to be the best player he can be in every regard.

I don't want to see the kid start to rest on his laurels or his talent alone. Oh and blocking for his team mates when THEY have the ball is part of being "the best."
Biggest dick is Dan Marino.
