So I heard this from someone I trust, but as always with internet gossip, take it or leave it.
OBJ visited the Poughkeepsie Galleria last week for a St. Jude's charity fund raising autograph signing session. Apparently OBJ signed the contract back in the summer before he became the star he is now so it wasn't a lot of money.
So he showed up to the signing an hour and a half late and wasn't happy being there. He apparently charges a hell of a lot more now that he's a star. He wouldn't talk to anyone, only signed autographs. He wouldn't take pictures as he said his appearance fee didn't cover that and he wanted more money. He also wouldn't sign pictures of his infamous catch -- he wanted more money for that as well. He took a picture with a pop warner team that he'd previously agreed to, but didn't even make an effort to smile during the photo. He was just plain unpleasant.
I love what OBJ does on the field and am glad he's a giant. But it looks like character wise, he's kind of a prick. He's no Victor Cruz, Michael Strahan, Eli, etc.
Odell probably couldn't sign his catch photo, because he agreed to a deal with Steiner Sports for it. Eli has the contract, Cruz does and so did Shockey. They were not allowed to sign certain things.
Coughlin and Manning have already commented on trying to keep his head from blowing up.

He was definitely late as far as I could tell but the other stuff just isn't true at all. And he was coming from practice all the way up to the galleria in Poughkeepsie. It was not the greatest organization for one of these things but he was no worse than any other athlete I've ever seen at a signing.
Well glad somebody was there and can put the BS to bed.

Someone that was there >>>> My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Beckham being kind of a dick.
The top 5 biggest assholes I've ever met are Favre, Sapp, Strahan, Emmet Smith & Aaron Rodgers. Trust me I have saying it, because I loved Strahan on the field. This was in 2004 in Eli's first year. He literally yelled at me at training camp. I was 14 years old. Also met him at the Super Bowl in Tampa in 2001. Kerry Collins & Tiki both signed a hat and a card for me. Strahan ignored me like I didn't exist.

I've got a funny Strahan story. 2003 or so, the Giants signed my college roommate to a training camp deal. He was a defensive lineman on the UNLV football team, Ahmad Miller.
Anyhow, my parents and I went to training camp one weekend to surprise Ahmad and wish him luck with making the Giants. So at the end of practice, he is walking off the field and we're making noise trying to get a hold of Ahmad who is walking off the field next to Strahan. Strahan looks over at us and starts to come over, so my mom goes, "Not you, Strahan, we were looking for Ahmad." So I said, "Great, Mom, you've just dissed the best player on the defense, Ahmad here will probably be cut by the end of the day now." Everyone cracks up, Ahmad makes it until after the 3rd preseason game and gets cut.
could be worse.

After SF won the NFC Championship two years ago, Strahan went to a restaurant where my father was and sat at a table nxt to him. My father said people were waving and cheering for him and he politely waved and smile at everyone. After my dad ate, he couldnt help resist to go his table to tell him how big of a Giants/Strahan fan he was and wished him good luck when it came to the HOF. Strahan shook his hand, smiled, and thanked him for the kinds words.
Doesnt seem like a dick to me.
Eli is great, Tiki was extremely nice, LT is pretty good to his fans, Jacobs is too. If there is even a possibility I could say something good about them I will.
Met Shockey in 2003 in Tampa. He was a complete dick head. Met him a few years later at training camp and an event in Miami. Extremely nice both times.

LT was at my dads work this past summer to sign autographs. My father said he was by far and away the nicest/funniest athlete he ever met.
Zeke Mowatt was a douche.
The 2nd coolest thing I ever saw from a pro was Jason Sehorn. That season he tore his hamstring. Couldn't practice. Tried to run near the end of practice and couldn't. He got so pissed he threw his hat off and left out of the other exit in the opposite direction of the rest of the team. You could tell he was super pissed. He starts storming off. A few kids see him and realize they have an opportunity for a handful of them to meet JS and get autographs. Well, I thought this is going to be interesting because he's had a bad day and he's pissed. Kids catch up to him, he spins around and you would have thought it was the best day of his life. He was so cool and friendly to those kids. Complete turnaround. Thought man, now that's a class act.
Plenty of other people who were at the event (not heard it about it second hand from some unnamed source) said he was pleasant.
Yeah, he was late. But if anyone has been to any event with a celebrity they know these people are late 90% of the time and usually it's not their fault. It's their staff/handlers fault.
I'm with Tom Coughlin, anyone want to talk about football?
LOL, well said
The first time in Tampa in 2001 I was an 11 year old. Completely ignored me. In 2004 I was 14 and he screamed at me that I'm selling the picture I wanted signed, because he sees me everyday. First time ever at training camp.
He probably will. Too much money to pass up for a guy on his rookie contract. Extremely easy money.
Met Shockey and he too was very friendly. LT was not as friendly during his playing days as he was after. Perspectives change.
I will say this, Tiki was by far the most magnanimous player I've ever witnessed. After practice he stopped by the fences lining the players exit to the U of Albany athletic facility and signed every last ball, photo, jersey, etc., on both sides of the fence.
just sayin :)
Yes Odell was signing pictures of his phenomenal catch in that video.
On a rainy training camp day, after the team "scrimmage " (remember those?); Sehorn was the only player to come over to the rope by the bleachers to sign for the kids. NY State Trooper had to pick up my son's football card after he fumbled it just before Jason signed it.
That was also the only time I ever saw LT in person when he wasn't playing football. Even with a long sleeve t-short he was a sight to behold. What a physical specimen he was.

Thank you.. stop expecting more out of athletes than you do out of regular people..
Exactly.
I've heard people say Shockey was a dick in public. I met him in a bar once on a Saturday afternoon, and he couldn't have been nicer
The nicest athlete I ever met was Kirby Puckett, when I was a kid, signed autographs forever and chatted nicely with everyone. And we all know what kind of guy he turned out to be
Could have been a long day with a ton of travel and meetings and he was just tired
I once had dinner at a pretty nice NYC restaurant and the waiter and I were talking about the Giants. He said that lots of players come to the restaurant all the time, and that Eli specifically was extremely private and didn't want any extra attention from other customers because he was so recognizable
That's probably about the nicest thing Meggett ever did in his life...
Just don't mention fantasy football to Jacobs. I hear he's not a fan. Probably something to do with he and his family being threatened if he didn't produce enough. That tends to put a damper on the whole thing.
Big Rick, Aaron Rodgers? Really?

I second that. I spotted him eating lunch with Rosenhaus in South Beach in 2012. He could have told me to piss off, and I wouldn't have held it against him. But he was super nice and he took a pic with me
I went to one of Eli's early signing gigs as a rookie & he did not look up once or talk nor were we allowed to take pictures, but you can tell it's simply because he was shy & uncomfortable.
These appearances is just a small glimpse of these players, look at Tiki, was outwardly an affable guy & well....
That being said, all I want from these players is to put out their best on the field every game
in fact, doing -events- at all may be really an option, not a must, since, like any wealthy people, they could donate money directly, or, as celebrities, lend voice or video appearances during the off season and so on.
the 'show and sign' seems like something from an earlier era.
I would not read too much into it.
At least he wasn't a no-show. If he becomes an ass, you will certainly know it as sure as everyone knew Shockey was a douchebag.
Surprised to hear Strahan was a dick because of his TV persona. Believable though, based on what a MLB player said to me when I was 12.
These guys owe NOTHING to the "community". And the "community" certainly doesn't deserve the time they do donate.
first off, he signed stuff, and can't really be expected to take pics with each person, especially is 10x as many people show up than they probably planned for.
who said this was a charity event? this is a sporting goods store, not charity.
i have met strahan, he wasn't a prick to me. i have been to many training camps, and had tons of players sign for me.
OBJ is a beast, we should be happy he is a Giant, who cares if he was nice to people in a mall.

Terps, was it you who had some good stories about some athletes that you ran into?

He was paid to show up to the event. He wasn't doing it solely out of the goodness of his heart.

I don't know why people think it's OK to bother these people. If Beckham made a mistake it was offering to go to this or any other event on his own time, because his reward for doing so was someone starting a thread calling him a dick.

You're probably thinking about someone else. I've met a few through a buddy of mine in that industry, but nothing crazy.

Like in FDRs speech about Pearl Harbor when he announced we were at war with Japan started "Yesterday, December 7th,a day that will live in Infamy"...
Infamy and infamous are not good things to be. Hitler is infamous.Think Jeffrey Dahmer.
I did wait tables down in DC and encountered a few well known people. Not Tom Gordon though. Must have been another BBIer.

Didn't you wait tables and get stiffed by cheap shitheads like Tom Gordon?

lol glad I wasn't the only one who thought that!
Wouldn't shock me if he did have a bit of an ego on him, especially since his rise to fame has been so damn fast. Who was the last non-QB to become one of the most popular players in the game within the first 8 games of his career?
I mean I care a little bit if my favorite athlete is a good person or a dick. So I hope Beckham matures a little. But being a bit of a dick during autograph sessions doesn't really matter to me if keeps on playing like a star.
I think Eli is a great presence for him and will help make sure he stays on the right path.
I don't want to see the kid start to rest on his laurels or his talent alone. Oh and blocking for his team mates when THEY have the ball is part of being "the best."
