CFL O-Lineman Of The Year to workout for Giants

cd0511 : 12/23/2014 10:00 am
Brett Jones from the Grey Cup champion Calgary Stampeders worked out for the Buccaneers and has a workout scheduled with the Giants. He was Offensive Lineman of the year this past season and Rookie Of The Year last year. May be a bit undersized for an NFL lineman but has great technique and is very smart. As many as 9 NFL teams have expressed interest but for now these are the only 2 workouts he has scheduled.

6'2" 318 is all that undersized. He's a C. Options for the Giants
Can't have too much interior line depth.

He'd be a project, but it's not as though J.D. Walton and John Jerry figure in the team's long-term plans.

Practice squad, guys who might well contribute next year, I see a dearth of talent at OL above all. Bring them in!
He's got a connection to the G-Men as well

His head coach in Calgary is former Giants OC John Hufnagel

It's receivers and DBs who make the jump from CFL to NFL.

One thing for sure; he'll know pass blocking.

Good point. Maybe Hufnagel recommend him to the Giants. Definitely bring him in for a work out. We need all the help we can get on the OL.
Good player...Calgary had the CFL's

best running game and he was a big part of it. Saw him twice this season...he can play but is he strong enough for the NFL. CFL the D-line is a yard off the ball.
Wow

trying to think of how good you'd have to be to win ROY as a center. You can also assume he's smart enough to make line calls -- he fell in the draft because he was considering medical school.
Why not

Went up against Akiem Hicks, now of the Saints, in college.

the CFL. sometimes they don't work out in the pros, but cameron wake was a huge coup for the dolphins.

from the CFL? There are defintely decent players there. Kudos to the Giants for bringing in the kid for a tryout and for scouting everywhere they can.
Anyone know of other

former CFL OL who have been successful in the NFL? Hope the kid makes it.
Isn't his size comparible to that of Chris Snee?

I don't believe Snee was any taller?
I think Canada is better known for producing OL busts.

Tony Mandarich and Danny Watkins come to mind. It's a big country, though.
Here's some video of him.

This may be neither here nor there, but I've stopped automatically assuming doctors are smart a long time ago.

he immediately looks to block the next guy once he's derailed his man. Has a quick punch and seems to be a smart player. It seamless and beautiful.

IIRC before he was in the CFL, he was on the Giants practice squad. The ones you let get away ...
