I'm very cautious about expectations for next year.

yatqb : 12/26/2014 12:04 am
Paul Schwartz does a good job in the Post of noting that we haven't beaten a playoff-bound team all year.

As we all know, many wins last season were against backup QBs, and this year wasn't much different -- Hill, Cousins, RG III, Mettenberger, Fitzpatrick -- either kids or crappy vets. We beat two teams that some might respect; Atlanta (cough) and the Texans. Every really solid team we've played beat us, and many humiliated us.

In my opinion, we need to beef up both lines and our LB corps so as to become a physical team once again if we're going to have a chance against physical teams like the Eagles and the rebuilt Dallas team. We can do it with one more strong FA class and a draft focusing on those areas, but we cannot assume that we are a playoff caliber team if we win Sunday, because we just aren't.
Schwartz piece - ( New Window )
In my mind, next year is also a rebuildign next year

2016 is the year we can hope to once again be big players on the League's stage IF the right moves continue to be made.
We have the most ridiculous list of players on IR I have ever seen.

Many of whom were important cogs or more.

Health more than any other single thing derailed this team yet again.

each year, as we've seen here

There'going to be a rash of injuries. The depth build up of this team is more so vital than most other team here. Its going take a few off seasons and right aquisitions to get it up to par.
Not beat a playoff team Except

Possibly the Falcons, but that may not count.

I remember when we finished '98 with a 4 game winning streak. I was convinced that was going to carry over to '99. It didn't. We finished 7-9 and actually took a step back from '98's 8-8 record.

Point is, every season is unique. I think things are on the upswing, but you never know how things will shake out.
Even with a presumption

of complete health, the team would be short at safety, as well as the lines. Still, they're not that far away. They could have beaten the Cardinals. Neither Cowboy game was out of reach. They stayed with the Seahawks for 3 quarters. They were completely outclassed in three games. Eagles, Colts & Lions. I think the coordinators were as much at fault in those games, as the players. Of course Coughlin bears ultimate responsibility as HC, but the way the team was unprepared for crowd noise against the Lions & Eagles, and the mystifying game plans on defense against Detroit and Philadelphia made those losses worse than they should have been. However, Parcells & Belichick had games like that. Rams, Robert Delpino.

They were thin to begin with. Plus, maybe 12 more IRed plsyers than the league average, some of whom were key players, added up to a losing season.
I had no illusions
oldmanTom : 12/26/2014 7:59 am : link
about this team beginning this year. I viewed this season as the first of an extensive rebuilding process and projected 6 or 7 wins. But I think the last several games have been significant. TC has proven he can still motivate his team as well as any coach. Also we have seen the emergence of several young players who will be the core of the team moving forward. With adding a few good OL's and some health I think we are fine on the offensive side.

Defense is where next year's focus must be: DL, linebackers, and safeties. A good year repairing this side of the ball and we should be good to go for 2016.

Texans can still make the playoffs with help as well.

Agree with OP and Optimus. This team is still a ways away
Victor in CT : 12/26/2014 8:10 am : link
2016 is more likely the time when they become true contenders. Injuries aren't an excuse, they were a 6-10 team going in. Aside from Cruz and maybe Schwartz, there isn't on established impact player on that injured list.
If the defensive coaches all come back
arnief : 12/26/2014 8:10 am : link
they'll have another losing record next year. Unless the owners take the defensive scheme away from the head coach like they did the offensive scheme this year it will be another losing season.
I agree that we need help on the OL and DL come next
lester : 12/26/2014 8:22 am : link
year but this team HAS to get healthy....the injuries over the last few years is appalling. We have a lot of talent if healthy but it will be interesting to see what Reese does with JPP and Prince. My priority would be to sign Prince before JPP.
Unless I'm mistaken
oldmanTom : 12/26/2014 8:32 am : link
Prince is signed through 2015
forgot about Prince.

miss playoffs again and BBI assures me TC isnt going anywhere for 2016.
The injury to Schwartz hurt this team mightily.
yatqb : 12/26/2014 9:02 am : link
In the 5 quarters during which he played the team could suddenly run the ball. If he gets/stays healthy and we add one more starting offensive lineman we'll have the OL solidified. We'd then ideally need another true #2 receiver opposite OBJ, Jennings to stay healthy, and to add a smurf 3rd down RB and the offense would be complete.

On defense, however, we need to develop a pass rush once more. We Bromley to become a player (and if not we need at least one more DT) we need to re-sign JPP AND bring in another stud DE, we need a difference-maker at LB, we need Beason to come back healthy, we need at least one if not two safeties, and we need to bring back Thurmond, Bowman and the other depth CBs we started this year with.

That's likely a two year proposition, as Optimum said. But Reese loves his offensive playmakers, and if he emphasizes that we're not gonna match up well in our own Division unless we get a lot more lucky with 4th round OLs than we've been in recent times.
Only games that were total blowouts were eagles and colts
mattlawson : 12/26/2014 9:06 am : link
Inexcusable yes. But this team me are watching now is not the same team. In a year the Giants could very well have all their issues ironed out and the emergence of young players like Beecham, Kennard, Wynn, Moore, Williams, Richburg -- it's huge for the confidence of this team going forward. One more OL draft pick and some healthy wrs, corners and LBs for depth and we've got a decent shot.
imho its two years
Bill2 : 12/26/2014 9:10 am : link
Id focus on OL/WR in FA/top of draft. Try to win more shootouts and trust in ELi (I think Cruz is a season away if that as an over the middle/slot impact player).

I think we have huge needs at safety...as in we need 2-3 of them. I think we have one LB and holes on the DL. More than a draft/FA can do.

I think many good teams beat us easily this year and next...that's a different metric than improving our odds of getting into the playoffs

I agree that injuries to others or a better than recent average injury year can get us into the 201 playoffs and then we hope to get hot...but on a planful more reliable playoff wining team basis... I think we are 2 years away.

There is a possibility right now of a disaster on defense with 4 below average safeties and 5 of 6 below average LBs and a JPP less collection of below league average DL.

This team goes into 2015 with three players able to compete against any team (Eli, Beckham and JPP against the run) and tons only able to compete against the bottom half teams.

as it stands now. Possible yes. Likely...more holes than one off season

imho...which thankfully does not count for much.

Agree with BlueLou
deadkurtrulz : 12/26/2014 9:21 am : link
The Giants IR is hard to believe. Twenty names and Ten starters not counting Jennings who has been hobbled more often then not. For comparison the Jests have eight on IR and only two starters. Hard to evaluate where this team is at when half the roster is on IR.

That said, any team with a solid QB and coach is not far from contending. I think Giants have that. The addition of a superstar play maker makes Giants a threat to beat any team. Giants needs are OL/DL, and LB.Need to rebuild the core. I like Moore and Wynn and believe the DB's will be solid next year. The glaring need is a new DC.

I believe Giants can contend next year. I don't see next year as a rebuilding year. Manning to Beckham elevates the entire team.
This team as it's currently constructed
mrvax : 12/26/2014 9:24 am : link
is basically meaningless, meaning I can't take anything from the results. We are playing with guys that are just filling in for a bucket load of injured players.

I'm very confident in next year (assuming a normal number of injuries). A piece or 2 in FA (good mauling guard) followed by another solid draft and there's no reason to think we cannot compete for the division title.
But

In the 5 quarters during which he played the team could suddenly run the ball.

He showed nothing in preseason....and having him play LG instead of RG was puzzling....hope we have not signed another Baas....

The roster has holes, and the roster is still lacking talent both among starters and depth under contract. E.g, the OL, TE, RB, DT, and S.

Each season IS unique.
old man : 12/26/2014 9:47 am : link
You can play 'follow the bouncing seasons' record' with many teams in the NFL, for all the reasons mentioned, plus the scheduling.
The possibility of HC, and/or DC, and FO changes may make a big impact going forward.
The FA signings this offseason will give an early indication of what to look forward to, then the draft as well.
As mentioned we need a season where we don't break our own IR record.
And for all you who are into 'signs', the Giants won SB 21, and also SB 42; if you go by the doubling factor, we also won SB 25, so..... Additionally, a thread within the past 2 days mentioned we win one every 4 years, so....
i thnk the TE position
GMANinDC : 12/26/2014 10:07 am : link
can stay as it is..It's an outlet and I think Donel and Fells are just fine., No need to get Pro Bowlers at every positon. Just guys who want to play and play hard.

I think we have 2 good LB's in Kennard and McClain..Antyhng form Beason or Williams will be a plus..we need to upgrade at depth there..

Rolle is serviceable but that salary can't be maintained..Stevie borwn is iabilty at many times..I htink the CB position with DRC, Prince, McBride, and if we keep Thurmond is pretty solid..

The OL s what is is..it needs a makeover altogether..

I like what Jenkins and Hankins can do up front. Bromley needs some more snaps to see what he canb do..not sure about Kuhn..It needs maybe a FA or draft pick to bolster..

DE is going to be the issue. I think they are too young..The NYG always had a veteran presence on the ends like a Osi, Tuck, Strahan, to teachthe younger guys..They have a stable of young guys with no one realk experience. They need to find one in the FA market, maybe a Hardy if he is priced right..

Expectations are zero as long

as Perry Fewell is still here. Can't win consistently if you give up 30 points every time you play a decent QB.

We bottomed out from Hurricane Sandy through the 0-6 start. Since then, we've played .500 ball for a season and a half. Next step is back in playoff contention.

I would keep Pugh, Westburg and Schwarz, I'm not sold on Beatty and he is not worth that contract..If you want to keep Pugh at RT then you need to get another guard Iupati or Bulaga..or even Joe Barksdale from the Rams..

I wold dump Walton, Snyder and all the other journeyman they signed during the offseason..I wish they would have signed Will Montgomery instead of Walton..
Well,
Doomster : 12/26/2014 11:19 am : link
obviously there is no depth to the OL, because if just one more guy went down, there really is no one.....

As it stands, what does this OL really have?

Beatty is serviceable....he is a mistake waiting to happen.....a quick DE makes him look bad....teams attack the weakest part of the line...right now, he is not the weakest link.....next year?

Richburg will probably be a center next year, but how good will he be? Will it be a learning process? Will he get strong in the offseason? He certainly is not a road grader at guard....

Will Pugh be the RT or be moved to guard? Was it an injury that diminished his play this year?

Then Schwartz.....another possible Baas situation....if he can stay healthy, is he the RG or LG? We really don't know how good he is.....

That means we need a FA/Draft Pick, for the final position, whether it is RT or guard is the question......and then there is the question of depth.....

Donnell and Fells are BOTH free agents....we need a blocking TE.....

Playing musical chairs with the OL in the offseason, will lose whatever cohesion it had, and will once again be a work in progress again next year....
The Giants will have a 69 year old HC and a 34 year old QB next season
Riggies : 12/26/2014 12:07 pm : link
I actually agree that 2016 is the likely best case for being competitive again, but if that's true, then the franchise is pretty much setting themselves up for a what? Two year window, if things go close to perfectly well? How is that smart football decision making to basically strive for that limited time, with how much time will have already been both wasted and spent on a rebuild?

They have no one to blame for it but themselves and the mistakes they've collectively made the last five or so years, but the franchise is in an extremely tenuous situation right now.

What are the odds that the Giants finish with the worst injury wise 3 years in a row?

NO WAY !!!! Giants bounce back in a big way!
