He did interview for the head coaching job with the Bills, I have not heard anything about that interview, but that is the guy I would want also. That defense was very good, and after watching what they did to the packers in green Bay, I am sold.

It's possible the new head coach will want to bring in another DC which would free Fangio from his contract.

None of those guys would really excite me aside from Fangio who likely isn't an option anyway.

I say give Pepper a shot. Maybe bringing in a former NYG LBer as DC would finally force the FO to, you know.. actually get some linebackers here.
Spags
bradshaw44 : 1/7/2015 4:55 pm : link
Then Shwartz.

Danny Kanell : 1/7/2015 4:57 pm : link
I think there would be a better chance they'd hire Rex before Schwartz. And we know they wouldn't hire Rex.

I believe Schwartz is still under contract with the bills, so unless they get a new head coach who decides to fire him. He is not really an option now because it's considered a lateral move.

No matter who they bring in...

60% of BBI will be up in arms. Pissed off beyond belief that they made this horrible selection

30% Will love the pick and this was ABSOLUTELY the guy they would have chosen

10% Will admit to not knowing a damn thing about the guy and his ability and will take a wait and see approach

These numbers can used for the coming up draft as well.
I suspect Coughlin is going to hire someone with a lot more experience
DanMetroMan : 1/7/2015 5:10 pm : link
as a DC but he Holcomb sounds good

Quote:
He made NFL connections in New York and got his opportunity with the pros by joining the New York Giants in 2009.

Four years later, then-Giants General Manager Dave Gettleman took the Panthers GM job.

Within a month of Gettleman’s January hiring, Rivera and the new GM invited Holcomb to interview for the open LB coach spot. It was Holcomb’s first time interviewing for a position coach spot, but he must have handled it well; Rivera called him the next morning and offered him the job.

Holcomb said his biggest concern about accepting the offer was pulling his 11-year-old son from school midway through the year and taking his family south. But his son adjusted quickly, finishing the school year in Charlotte.

“He’s made the transition really well,” Holcomb said. “He’s got a ton of a Panthers gear. Every time I go home he’s got a Panthers hat on, some kind of shirt, shorts, he’s got it all, so we’re on board. The whole family is on board.”

Holcomb also had to hit the books after taking the job. In the offseason, he spent six weeks in a hotel while meeting with the rest of the coaching staff to prepare for the upcoming season. Each night, Holcomb would return to his hotel room, open his playbook and start memorizing schemes and techniques.

Now, Holcomb is the teacher.

Linebacker Chase Blackburn commended Holcomb’s ability to describe and explain, and the mechanical pencil Holcomb keeps behind his ear until long after practice adds to his scholarly image.

Rivera has noticed how all the linebackers turn to Holcomb for advice.

“You see them asking questions of him and going to him directly,” Rivera said. “One thing you always worry about when you put a new face in the room is that guys will go to somebody else that they have more familiarity with, and that hasn’t happened.”

In addition to technical questions, several Panthers have asked Holcomb about the Super Bowl ring he earned with the Giants.

“I keep it at a safe place and I’m very proud of it, and every now and then I go in there and take a look at it,” Holcomb said. “I smile when I see it.”

think BBI is a little too Spags crazy but I suspect he's the pick. Coughlin is comfortable working with him, "proven" chemistry as coaches and probably doesn't feel like he has to look over his shoulder like he might with someone he doesn't "know" as well.

It only matters if it is a promotion to head coach. In the NFL's eyes, you are either a head coach or an assistant coach. Coordinator, position coach, it doesn't matter. They can block you for anything other than promotion to head coach.

100% agreed. Go watch Jacksonville's gameplan against Tom Brady and the Pats in 2007. What a shitshow that was. He gave up before the game started. The fact he got a head coaching gig after that game is mind blowing.

Why? TC brought Spags in. TC brought McAdoo in. TC got all of his jobs without prior connections.
I really don't know
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 1/7/2015 5:26 pm : link
much about Smith's tendencies at this point. He's definitely evolved over the years having spent so many years as the HC of Atlanta. But I do know he was brought up through the Ravens defensive ranks. He coached DL and LBs on the 99-02 Ravens. He played Linebacker when he was younger.

For a team that's biggest issues have been with the LB position and the front 7, having an ex-LB who coached one of the greatest front 7s ever in Baltimore can't be a bad thing. And when he went to Jacksonville to be the DC there, they were always good and sometimes great (led by the beastly Stroud/Henderson DT duo).
What's with the Mike Smith votes?

That's terrible and I'm sure he had lots of input on that defense, no thanks. they may as well have kept fewell if this is the new hire cause I don't see how that's an upgrade.

#1 Spags
#2 Schwartz
#3 Give an opportunity to a young innovative DC off a staff like Seattle, Panthers, Ravens that is consistently stout and aggressive.

That's the direction i would like to see the Giantys go.

Having input as HC is far from commanding a unit full time
Can someone please explain to me
Doomster : 1/7/2015 5:29 pm : link
why Spags would take the Giant job again?

He has set the bar for himself here, too high....with the present players on this roster, there is no way in hell he can replicate the defenses of '07 and '08......

I think any attempt to try and do that in his first year back, would put insane pressure on him......not to mention, the constant pressure from BBI!

I think Spag's has learned his lesson from his last two jobs.....don't take what just comes along, take what works best for him....
last year
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 1/7/2015 5:30 pm : link
I wanted "new blood" at the OC position. A young guy who was innovative and not a retread.

For the DC position, I'm leaning toward "retread". I'd prefer to hire someone with previous experience as a DC.
On that list, I would say Scwartz has the best credentials
mikeinbloomfield : 1/7/2015 5:33 pm : link
but I want an up-and-comer from a good defense coaching tree. Someone from the Detroit, Arizona, Ravens, etc. sideline that's ready to make the next step.

No way I would have fired Fewell to hire Jauron or Nolan
Think I'd go Jim Schwartz
Eric on Li : 1/7/2015 5:43 pm : link
4-3 coach who did a great job in BUF despite injuries, has a ton of experience, would bring some attitude to a unit that hasn't played with a lot of nastiness in recent years. Might even help with Suh as a bonus.

Spags has to be the most likely, and he's obviously pretty appealing as well. Fangio and Smith would both be solid hires as well. A lot of good options out there.
Jacksonville also had top 10 defenses
Geeman : 1/7/2015 5:45 pm : link
prior to his arrival. Those defenses may have played better due to Del Rio's influence and maybe Smith got too much credit. If that was his stamp then why didn't it follow him to Atlanta?
Falcons in 7 years have never been regarded as a top defense. He has a defensive background and would therefore handpick his DC that would run a scheme inline with his philosophies. That's his niche so he would have involvement especially for a unit that performed so poorly.
You think Belichek is hands off with his units, schemes and game plans?
This would not be a hire that would get me excited.
my brain says Schwartz is one of the best choices
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 1/7/2015 5:47 pm : link
but my heart says hell no, he's a douche.

Conflicted feelings on that for sure but I'd be excited if we got him.
Fangio won't be made available for a DC position...
Torrag : 1/7/2015 5:48 pm : link
so cross him off your list. I'd personally consider Wade Philllips IF the organization is willing to radically alter the scheme to primarily a 3-4 setup as imo that is where he thrives as a coach.

That said my first choice would be Spags. He brings an aggressive mindset that should be the philosophical core of EVERY NY Giants defense. Fuck trading yardage for potential turnovers. Making the opposing QB uncomfortable in the pocket and confusing his reads are the key in this passing rules friendly version of the NFL. Spags brings all of these elements to the table as a DC.

TC talked about the need for change and invigoration similar to comments made about the offense last year.

Last year he let go 2 older and long time positional coaches. This year so far one. Paving the way for a young inexperienced coordinator?

So guessing again it will be a young positional coach ready to move up. Indicated scheme change but not a huge one so would be a 4-3 guy. Guess will see.

But that would be "a set of stones".
What is the Love for Spags?
Arkbach : 1/7/2015 6:27 pm : link
I'll take him over PF, but people seem to think he's going to be the savior of the defense. His defense wansn't top rated when he was here and he sucked at STL and NO. He's only a secondary coach in BAL. Why do people think he'll be the messiah? What did he do in NY that warrants this love?

He was a guy who designed a dominant defense that led us to a superbowl win. dominant. creative. aggressive. all the things giant fans want to see from their defense in both style and result. that will never be forgotten, not now, not ever.

I have said before Spags is the guy
Reale01 : 1/7/2015 8:10 pm : link
TC knows Spags. Spags knows the coaches and that he can work together with them. No other firings needed. I would not be surprised if they had a deal in place earlier this week. Thus Fewell is gone (he may have been the backup plan) and I am wondering if maybe that is why Guinta was also let go. He was said to be a little bitter when Spags got the job over him.

Coughlin's comments seemed to say the defense needed an infusion of energy - Spags is your guy for that.

to Spag's.....first, have they asked permission to even approach him? Second, I don't think he would even talk about it until the Ravens were eliminated......can you imagine BBI if the Ravens make it to the SB?

What surprised me is, by letting Fewell go, and if a few weeks go by because the Ravens are still in it, what happens if he says no? Now the DC becomes the second , third ,fourth choice?
Doomster
Reale01 : 1/7/2015 8:47 pm : link
True. However - Reese and Ozzie have a tight relationship. We did them a solid in recommending Hill to them. It is very possible that we did ask and receive permission and that it was kept quiet.
I'd like Schwartz

call him an asshole or douchebag but the guy knows defense. Just look at what Buffalo did to the Broncos and Packers in back-to-back weeks. And as someone said maybe it lands Suh in FA.

Spags is an obvious yes. I'd like Wade Phillips, who would love to get back to coaching and although I don't think he'd be available, Vic Fangio.

A few other unknown names:

Rocky Seto from Seattle--mentioned him on a few other threads. He's been with Carroll since USC and was the DC in '09. Still under 40

Bill McGovern from the Eagles--has Boston College ties although he wasn't there the same time as Coughlin. Has DC experience, including when Herzlich and Kuechly were there and BC's defense was at it's best. Last time we took an LB coach from the Eagles it worked out. He's from Oradell as well.

Robert Saleh from Jacksonville--I admit this may be premature. He'll only be 36 this month but so was McAdoo when we hired him last year, it'll also be his 10th year in the NFL and he's learned under some good defensive minds. His first job in coaching was actually taking over for McAdoo as graduate assistant back in '02 at Michigan St. Interesting story as to how he got there too.

is an extended member of the Buddy Ryan tree via Jeff Fisher. Pass.

Would go Spags, Pepper then Smith reluctantly as I see Schwartz and Vic being no gos.
Spags, no question.

He's already got the jacket.

Reale, how could you possibly know Will Hill was recommended to The Ravens(I'm not trying to be a wiseass, it's an honest question)? Firstly, the entire league was aware of his on-field talent..Secondly, on what other basis, would a 3-4 time "offender" who could not be trusted, whose words meant squat, be recommended to ANYONE?
Preston Parker did worse stuff than Hill
oipolloi : 1/7/2015 9:38 pm : link
Yet, Giants took a chance on him.

There is this weird dynamic in the NFL where you can take a chance on a guy who messed up for other other teams but for disciplinary reasons, you have to cut guys who mess up while a member of your team.

If Hill had been a Raven in 2012-3, they very likely would have cut him this year just like the Giants did, and he could have wound up playing in New Jersey for Big Blue.

So, I think it is really timing rather than the Giants having a different standard than other teams, such as the Ravens. As far as the Ravens sticking with Ray Lewis, Giants did the same with LT. Some guys are too good to let go. Will Hill wasn't one of them.

Ozzie said that he asked Reese about Hill. Hill also said the Giants helped to get him a shot with the Ravens. IIRC it was mentioned in a couple articles that came out around that time. My larger point was that it was very possible that the Giants had asked and received permission to talk with Spags.
Ok, fair enough. Thanks

I would be very interested in Rocky Seto. I would at least like to see him interviewed before we get a retread. Offense has change drastically with agressive passing over the past couple years and Seattle has adjusted the best in covering with players in proper positions on the field while still being aggressive.

I liked the mcadoo hire and I think this would be a similar hire for the opposite side of the ball.

Let Coughlin head the operation with dicipline and class but let the gurus handle style of play for today's NFL

why Spags would take the Giant job again?

He has set the bar for himself here, too high....with the present players on this roster, there is no way in hell he can replicate the defenses of '07 and '08......

I think any attempt to try and do that in his first year back, would put insane pressure on him......not to mention, the constant pressure f

I think Spag's has learned his lesson from his last two jobs.....don't take what just comes along, take what works best for him....

Thank You...this is a freaking fantasy and a stooopid one at that!! I will pass on Spags!!

There is so much irony attached to someone talking about something being "stooopid" - learn to spell.

Also, Spags is coming back. He'll be in the office Monday morning. Said so himself.
I'd like to explore the Ron Rivera defensive staff...

Love McDermott but I think he's locked in. Would like to speak with either Eric Washington, their DL coach or Steve Wilks, their secondary coach...
I'd say Spags
chopperhatch : 1/9/2015 12:25 am : link
mostly because of the latest story coming out that he considers himself a DC and not really an HC. Would love some continuity there with Mac ready to take the reigns from Coughlin.

Second would be Pepper because I don't think we can get nor KEEP Fangio
Spags, Spags and Spags
Jolly_Blue_Giant : 1/9/2015 12:40 am : link
He just seems like the best fit right now for so many reasons. Hopefully the Ravens DC Pees (who is 65) isn't planning on retiring and they offer the DC job to Spags.
Fangio...
SanFranGiantsFan : 1/9/2015 6:35 am : link
Not that there's a shot in hell of him coming. I wouldn't mind a Spags reunion; Schwartz intrigues me. He seems like a prick, but he did a great job in Buffalo this past season.
