Are the giants going to move Richburg to center?

scott in albany : 1/10/2015 12:54 pm
We all think the giants will make that move but i haven't heard the giants say that. I believe walton is signed through 2016.

The giants have a lot of questions to answer about the offensive line.

Is richburg moving to center? Is Pugh staying at RT?
I think we all collectively ...
Mike in Raleigh : 1/10/2015 12:58 pm : link
expect some changes along the OL this off-season! ;)
I would
BigBlueinDE : 1/10/2015 1:04 pm : link
think so. Walton was mediocre last year and probably isn't going to get better.

As for Pugh, I would say that he stays at RT.

OL is a major issue and I expect a starting caliber left guard and competent backups to be signed.

Beatty, ?, Richburg, Schwartz and Pugh.
Will the Giants move Richburg to center?
illmatic : 1/10/2015 1:04 pm : link
Will they finally add some quality linebackers? Will they get a good TE? Will they get rid of Quinn?

Most likely
Phil in LA : 1/10/2015 1:14 pm : link
Walton was terrible.
Yup. They have to.
MOOPS : 1/10/2015 1:15 pm : link
I think Walton is back only if he takes a drastic cut in salary to near vet minimum. Otherwise he's cut. And if he comes back, he's a sub.
He was pretty bad last year.
I'm sure no word would come out about this
robbieballs2003 : 1/10/2015 1:17 pm : link
until either after FA or the draft. If we are able to obtain a quality guard then I think you would hear it just like we didn't hear Kiwi moving to LB until after the draft when everybody thought we were going to draft a LB.
if not him who then?
sundayatone : 1/10/2015 1:19 pm : link
let it be said, let it be done
Question is,
Doomster : 1/10/2015 1:21 pm : link
is Walton worth 3.125 M?

If they plan on Richburg at C, Walton could be cut, and a backup could be signed at vet min....or maybe they decide to keep Walton for insurance, but it will be costly....

I think we have Beatty-FA-Walton-Schwartz-Pugh or Beatty-Pugh-Richburg-Schwartz-FA.....
Based on the fact Walton
pjcas18 : 1/10/2015 1:22 pm : link
was awful and Richburg struggled at guard I expect this to happen, but like Robbie said, won't know for sure until after FA and the draft.

If I had to guess I'd say yes, otherwise it's kind of a waste of a 2nd round pick unless Richburg can improve dramatically at guard (and to be fair he was a rookie playing a new position so improvement is certainly possible)
He better be
Dave in PA : 1/10/2015 1:23 pm : link
why the hell else did they draft him? A really good center is generally more valuable than a league average guard
when we hear it from
sundayatone : 1/10/2015 1:30 pm : link
da sports pope then thats the seal of approval
I expect a competition
kmed : 1/10/2015 1:31 pm : link
between Walton and Richburg for the starting spot.
I doubt it's a competition
pjcas18 : 1/10/2015 1:35 pm : link
cutting Walton saves 2.5M on the cap, even with a higher than expected cap, that's too much to just wait until the end of camp, and then possibly cut Walton.

I think they'll make up their mind before camp, possibly even early in free agency.
In my mock last year
scott in albany : 1/10/2015 1:39 pm : link
I had the giants taking richburg in the 2nd rd. I was shocked when he did not start at center from day 1.
that would seem to be the plan
oipolloi : 1/10/2015 1:45 pm : link
but the line appeared to gel at the end, so they could always go with Walton at Center and Richburg at Guard for another season. Probably does not happen but it is a nice option to have.

Completely agree. At this point, Walton is insurance in case they can't sign or draft a starting guard and are forced to keep Richburg there.
They could draft AJ Cann in the 2nd
njm : 1/10/2015 1:59 pm : link
The line could then could be

Beatty Cann Richburg Schwartz Pugh
It's a good question - IF
GERRY7 : 1/10/2015 1:59 pm : link
they can get a high quality center in the draft. It would eliminate the need for Walton.
Or, much to BBI's chagrin, Walton
Big Blue '56 : 1/10/2015 2:06 pm : link
gets another year at C with the staff POSSIBLY feeling he shook off the two year rust and should be good to go next season..Not saying that's what will happen because I don't know WHAT they're thinking or how JW graded out with THEIR system of doing so..

I suppose FA and the draft will determine things, but "knowing" the tendencies of this staff, JW does indeed get 2015 with Richburg manning the G position
Both Richburg and Pugh will always be disadvantaged
Bob in Newburgh : 1/10/2015 2:07 pm : link
by being small for the position if they stay where they are. Athletically, they are not so well-endowed as to compensate for major physical disadvantages.

Heck give them the best opportunity to succeed. We might actually win some games.

There is no reason to consider Pugh locked at RT. He may be adequate, but he has certainly not been a revelation. He would have a superior skill set for LG however. And it is not like we do not have a major hole at that position.

Hopefully it is a joke that Walton may block Richburg's path to starting C.

Richburg
Dragon : 1/10/2015 2:34 pm : link
Is listed at 298, he will need to add 10-12 lbs to win the battle inside at OC. If he is moved to center then it's just like his rookie year all over again but I think most believe he is a center not an OG.
Pugh
Dragon : 1/10/2015 2:37 pm : link
Needs to get very close to 318 or more even if they still want him at RT. He just looks much more like a pulling guard than a road grader RT.
I Thought I Read Recently
Aloha Alan : 1/10/2015 2:47 pm : link
that Richburg himself has said he can get bigger.....or did I just have a flashback from substances ingested in college??

If he can put on 15+ pounds of muscle I think he could handle it and this level.

Like others have said, kept Walton as the backup.
You would think so.
TMS : 1/10/2015 2:52 pm : link
Thats what he was drafted for. Walton can be the backup C and guard as well. The sooner we get Richburg into that spot working with rest of the Ol and ELi the better. He is a middle of the road G but might an an all pro C.
I've said on several occasions that Pugh is too small to play RT
GeofromNJ : 1/10/2015 2:56 pm : link
but agile enough to play LG and pull on running plays. I also don't think Richburg is too small to play center, but it's possible that the coaching staff disagrees. If so, he should be moved to RG. To make the running game go, the Giants need to add a RT in the mold of McKenzie in addition to a TE who can block.
I would Be Satisfied With
Aloha Alan : 1/10/2015 2:56 pm : link
being 50% better at C than Walton in just the first year. Then better each year.
Since it is his
St. Jimmy : 1/10/2015 3:12 pm : link
natural position no. He may try linebacker next season.
They better
BlueHurricane : 1/10/2015 3:32 pm : link
Walton was terrible although his play improved somewhat at the end of the year. He needs to be a depth player at this point.
If they wanted a Guard they should have drafted one
#10* : 1/10/2015 4:12 pm : link
Richburg belongs at C.
Richburg is a C.
drkenneth : 1/10/2015 4:25 pm : link
I think Pugh to LG and a high pick at RT.
They should move him to center..that' why he was drafted....
Rick in Dallas : 1/10/2015 5:34 pm : link
Walton was awful this year
They better

.
I'm sure they will
Phil in LA : 1/10/2015 5:41 pm : link
and I think he would have been the C had Snee not retired. Like all rookies, his offseason weight program should really help.
Beatty Pugh Richberg Schwartz Peat /Sheriff
Zebra3 : 1/10/2015 5:46 pm : link
That's a good line if Schwartz isn't made out of sugar.
Walton
Paulie Walnuts : 1/10/2015 5:50 pm : link
stinks
If they draft Scherff
jeff57 : 1/10/2015 5:51 pm : link
My bet is they play him at LG
Hmmm
Phil in LA : 1/10/2015 5:51 pm : link
Schreff or Stanley/Bolling/Richburg/Schwartz/Pugh.
What would they do with Beatty?
pjcas18 : 1/10/2015 5:53 pm : link
he's not cuttable next year and I'd be surprised if he's a backup with his salary.

I think he's the LT next year barring injury
I'm hoping they can
Phil in LA : 1/10/2015 6:09 pm : link
trade him.
Would be
pjcas18 : 1/10/2015 6:11 pm : link
nice.
Based on Walton's performance in 2014
nicky43 : 1/10/2015 6:37 pm : link
The Giants would be making mistake not to uless they draft or sign in FA and better C than Walton.
Also
Phil in LA : 1/10/2015 7:28 pm : link
if they just cut Beatty, can't they designate him a June 1 and split the unamortized money over two years?

Yeah they can cut him as a post June 1 cut and it would be better. And of course I don't know this, but I think the Giants feel like Beatty is "good enough" and probably aren't looking to get a LT in FA or 1st round. I could be wrong.

I think the Giants knew Snee was retiring. He signed a million dollar contract in return for not getting an injury settlement, which actually would have cost the Ginats more.

It was a nice move by Snee, sacrificing a few dollars to help the team. But I think all parties knew he was very likely not going to be healthy enough. Chris probably just wanted to give it one more shot so he would not be left with any "what ifs"

But I don't think Snee at G was ever the plan.

That's exactly what I would do if I were the GM. He is good enough to back up, no more.
Richburg
Doomster : 1/10/2015 10:06 pm : link
does not have to be an all pro at center....he just has to stay healthy and not be a swinging gate like Walton...
honest question
cjd2404 : 1/10/2015 11:28 pm : link
Did the giants try richburg at center... Was he perhaps just not as good at center over Walton?
Can't speak for the practices
Phil in LA : 1/10/2015 11:43 pm : link
but he looked better at C than Walton in the preseason games.
