Giants 17 - Washington 0 in the NFC Championship Game.

This was the Giants most significant victory since defeating the Bears in the 1956 NFL Championship Game. Most people felt going in this was a meeting between the league's two best teams and the winner would take Super Bowl XXI almost as an afterthought. The Giants defense was at their best, as they held George Rogers to 15 rushing yards on 9 attempts and Gary Clark had 0 receptions (although he dropped a couple of deep balls that could've altered the complexion of the game.)

Schroeder collapsed after the game. Giants defense chased him all game long. And one of Pat Summerall's great quotes....

"So much for the wind".....
You can't talk about this game without talking about Sean Landeta

the confetti flying all over the stadium from the wind and practically the whole crowd with their hands around the next person's shoulders as if they were at the end of a Billy Joel concert when he sings Piano Man. It was the greatest sports experience I have ever been at. I have been much more exciting games, championships, etc. But, nothing will ever top that moment for me as a Giant fan. Seeing grown men openly cry at their team going to a Super Bowl was an eye opening experience for a young child like myself. As I said, it still remains the best game I have ever attended.
This game changed everything

This was the end of the decades of futility.
Had the special feeling all week long, and I knew in my heart we would not lose to Elway and the Broncos.
Waited a long time for this. Unfortunately for me I didn't get my tix till 1987 so I did not attend this great game, wish I had, probably would have wept myself.
Thanks, Jints

I never did get to see that game in real time. Unfortunately had to fly home during the game but had a change over at (then) RFK a few minutes after the game ended. Didn't take long to figure out who won. My dad overnighted a tape of the game. Wore that thing out years ago :)

Agreed..it is a memory I will never forget..being there with my Dad and brothers, everybody on their feet screaming for 30 minutes at least after game ended..how was it possible the Giants were going to the SB..?

We rented an RV that day...afterwards we partied in that thing with it rocking back and forth in the wind till past midnight..watched the AFC championship to see who we were playing..next thing I know we looked out and were last vehicle in parking lot..so grateful could experience with my Dad who I lost in 2004..
Holy crap - learned something new!

Started watching this on the iPad and discovered I could switch it to my TV screen. Smart Tvs rock. Anyway the pregnant is a treat in itself. The interview with Frank Gifford was terrific, talking about the '56 team.

Man, that was a long time ago. I Forgot what some of these people looked like "young" especially Gifford. No wonder he was getting some on the side - women must have been throwing themselves at him well into his 50s. Seeing The late Pat Summerall in his heyday is cool and the updates from the Cleveland Denver game brings you back
I was there on that windy day.

Great coaching by Parcells. In the days before cell phones, I was able to make my Super Bowl arrangements at half time.
I've been to 3 Super Bowls but

I was 12 and had the best day with my Dad. We had season tix in Section 137. He gave me the option of the 9ers or the Championship game to go to. I didn't hesitate as I knew the Gmen were destined.
It was amazing to watch the experience on the field and in the stadium. I'll never forget it.
There is a clip in the "America's Game" episode on this team

Of a guy in the crowd holding a big sign that says "Dad, our dream has come true"

Chokes me up every time. I feel like a lot of Fathers and Sons felt that way, including me and my Dad.
Football seemed more wholesome back then...

Everything in today's game is treated like you're driving through a school zone...

In a way, 28 years ago two stars were born - Parcells and Belichick.

while surrounded by Cowboy and Steeler frontrunners were vindicated that day. I think the only article of clothing that wasn't Giants related on my body that Monday at school was my sneakers, couldn't wait to go in and let them have it.
My favorite game...

by my favorite Giants team. Watched from my seat in Sec. 331. The wind blowing the confetti (or whatever it was.) The force of will...not to be denied that day. Redemption Day. A party. Great, great memories.

I knew the guy who had that sign. His name is David Stromaier and his dad had passed away.
I was at the Washington game and I recall had cold and windy it was.I remember buy two knishes and putting them in my coat pockets and I used them as hand warmers. The only other game at the Meadowlands I recall colder then the championship game was against the Eagles in the late 80's. It was freezing and it was the game when Cunningham punted the ball over Megget's head and we lost. I went home numb and depressed.
Wow...almost half a lifetime ago for me...

Went with my Dad too; it was the last game we attended together more due to circumstance than anything.

The game was bitter cold and I realized afterwards for the first time that Dad wasn't a young man anymore. I am so blessed he gave me this gift of being a Giants fan. We saw our first game together in '73 in Yankees stadium, and watched them lose for over most of the next decade, so it was sweet to finally make it to the SB.

I got his season tickets when he died in '03. What was section 320 Row 13 seats 20-24 is now Section 324 Row 16 seats 10-14. For the privilege of helping finance the new stadium they moved me back a few rows!

I wasn't sure I would acquire his tix as they were in someone else's name at that time, but the ticket office worked me through it. Still have the form letter from Wellington Mara announcing the new coach in '04 framed....it brought tears to my eyes when I read the first line "Dear Giants Seasons Ticket Holder".

Thanks for reminding me!

Congrats fort hill mike..when are you due?

I remember talking to my dad about the game later in the week
oipolloi : 1/11/2015 12:45 pm : link
By then, he was a severe alcoholic. But we were able to bond over the Giants. I hated him when I was a kid but learned to understand him more once I became an adult. Eventually we were able to re-establish a good father-son bond.

He died shortly before the 1990 SB and I remember thinking afterwards that at least he got to see the Giants win it in 86. He loved LT and Simms. He would always say a lion could be charging Simms and he wouldn't flinch.

Then I remember coming on BBI a couple of hours after the Giants beat the Patriots to end the perfect season on the night of Feb 3, 2008. There was a thread titled "Happy but also a little sad." I clicked on, and it was a post about how winning was great but the OP was also sad because it made him think of his dad and how happy his dad would have been to see the Giants win if he had still been alive. Somebody asked him when his dad had died. The OP responded, "1978." It was almost thirty years later and the thing he thought about when the Giants won was his dad.

It really is a gift to have shared the love of the Giants with your father.
Damn.

Great post oi. The first thing I thought of when seeing this thread was memories of watching with my Dad, who's not with us any more either.

I also remember several of my Dads friends calling him to congratulate him after we beat the Broncos, bc they knew he'd been a loyal Giants fan since the 40s

on every single play the Giants pass rush is DOMINANT.
That score was misleading.

As much of a total beatdown that game was, the score might've well have been 50-0.

you could tell that enthusiasm for the Giants was just growing as the season went along. This was the game that capped it. IMO the Giants still could have won the Super Bowl but to be so strong going into it put everyone in the mindset that the Giants were going to win. A lot of kids were able to join the bandwagon before the Giants beat Denver and some of those kids who barely watched the Giants before this game are some of the biggest fans I know to this day.
I remember very well how touched my dad was by the game
Greg from LI : 1/12/2015 9:41 am : link
As a youngster in 1986, the Giants had been a solid playoff team for most of my few years of watching them. It wasn't until I was older that I understood their history, and why my dad practically teared up while watching the final minutes of that NFC title game.
