Because Spags is known all around the league for being a genius who can make filet mignon out of chicken scraps. Just look what he accomplished in New Orleans! He took a rag tag defense and turned it into a record breaking defense.

Compare dead to gibril Wilson Butler and Johnson? Who he made serviceable in his first stint here as DC.
Don't forget about Cooper Taylor in your projections. He has been hurt each of his first 2 seasons but I think he has a lot of promise. Rolle and Demps both need to join the alumni club.
Unless you know something that the draftniks don't, I'm gonna say "hell no" to taking Hackett in the 2nd round. I checked three websites and none of them had him listed any better than the 4th round. Cody Prewitt from Ole Miss is another story, he's considered a 2nd round prospect by all, although I'd rather see the Giants address the safety position via free agency than via a premium draft pick.

Fuck the draftniks. I don't know what they see, but I see a fantastic prospect in Hackett. I go by my own analysis on him and I think Hackett is arguably the top S prospect in the Draft (yes, that includes Landon Collins). Good size, 7 picks, All-Big 12 this past season and unlike Gerod Holliman, the guy can actually tackle. I like both him and Paul Dawson A LOT. I hope we take one or even both, but I think both go in the second round as of now and I give the edge to Hackett. He's definitely better than Sam Carter and Kevin White Jr. He's my guy and my choice for our second round pick.
but so are DE, OT and Guard. I think Devin McCourty is a good safety, who might sign for low money. He's making 4 mil now. Well coached by the Pats, and he's a lot better than a rookie. Don't really see a safety in the first three rounds.
but maybe they'll draft someone in round 2 or 3... I kind of doubt it happens in 2 though. I just don't think they'll go all out on this position this year. Too many other holes to fill with both sides of the line, TE, linebacker. I think all of those are more prime candidates for free agency and high draft pick replacements. I think Rolle comes back though.
plan....but it's not going to happen in one season....some positions just will not be filled with high quality players....
And what is the plan? Fix the offense or the defense first? There is this illusion that we have all this cap money.....that we can create more by extending people like Eli...but as we have seen in the past, it only creates future problems, when you have a live for today and die for tomorrow philosophy....
As I said before, at this moment in time, we only have 3 legitimate starters on defeense, DRC, Prince, and Hankins...Beason is a ? Kennard is a project...no safeties....counting on an old Jenkins? From this draft position, we may get possibly two starters from the draft....there is not that much money for free agents....
But safety is a huge hole....it amazes me that Berhe's name comes up so often, that he is just going to step into the lineup......no experience.....recovering from a knee injury....and he couldn't get out there with the likes of
S. Brown and Demps back there....and then Taylor.....I'm amazed when this guy walks out of the shower and doesn't get hurt...how do you possibly look at these guys as starters? Or even backups?
This is another situation where Reese has to make a decision....Rolle is still better than both, but not the player he once was, and he never was worth 7 M to begin with...but who is out there that Reese can afford? and Rolle knows this....But will Reese fall into the Beatty, Baas, Beason trap, where he needs to fill a position at all cost, or has he learned his lesson? You make a decent two year offer, and hold the line....There might be a team like the Raydahs that thinks an aging vet has one or two more good years left, and overpays....Reese has to start getting more bang for his buck.....
plan....but it's not going to happen in one season....some positions just will not be filled with high quality players....
But this is year two of that plan. Remember the FAs and draft choices from last year? Do they not count somehow? Aren't DRC and Richberg and Beckham ad Schwartz and Bromley, etc, still here?
Rolle isn't worth the money he will want. I'd bring him back for one year at vet minimum or a little more but that's it. Demps is worthless and should be allowed to walk. I'd re-sign Stevie Brown for one year at vet min for some veteran presence over both of them. Or let him walk if Rolle re-signs.
Cooper Taylor is a good player but very injury prone, so they simply cannot rely on him. If they get lucky for a change, they might have him for a whole season. If not, which is likely, they have to have a replacement ready.
That leaves Berhe, who didn't play much Safety as a rookie, and Thomas Gordon who was re-signed despite the fact that he didn't even make the Practice Squad last season.
So they need at least two more Safeties, probably one in free agency and one in the draft, for this coming season. And I think this is probably their biggest draft need after linemen on both sides of the ball.
Spend FA money on a safety with range and ball skills
Let rolle walk and make up for his loss by signing a good but cheper option at LB that can play the run. McLain backs up and spells Beason at the mike. then add more beef at DT. Defense will be a lot better. Sign a guard that also comes a little cheaper in FA and away we go. Draft best beast available, more or less...
I suspect (and I said this several times last year) that the Giants will do for Safeties in 2015 what they did for CBs in 2014 - invest heavily in free agents.
As for the draft, I don't see them using a premium pick on a Safety. Instead, I think they'll do what they've done in recent years and tap a decent prospect on Day 3. Personally, I hope they keep the Syracuse connection alive and draft Durrell Eskridge in the 4th Round.
not to mention the idea that safety is a position where either vet savvy and or instincts (or field vision, an intrinsic / innate human quality that cannot be taught but which is real and provable) may be easier to spot in the veterans.
as for OT vs DE....if the value is at DT...you gain plenty from a serious DT..in terms of rush...either directly or indirectly on that line.
the real choice will be if good value is = at OT -and- DL....in round 1.
I would throw in my two cents, although I have advocated for both over the years...a great DT might actually deliver more wins next year...with the OL project still a high priority, albeit in that instance not in 1.
having said that, a great OT in 1...I certainly would not complain. even great OG...fine.

Well, I'm a firm believer in taking the BPA. In this case, a safety like Chris Hackett could very well be the BPA in my view because I think he belongs in the first round and we'd be getting him in the second. Like I don't think we need to take a WR at #9 but if Amari Cooper, Kevin White or Devante Parker are available, they could very well be the BPA.
safeties that Spags knows well who are set be UFAs in Jeromy Miles and Darian Stewart. Neither are perfect but both are solid players. It will be interesting to see what Baltimore does at safety. Stewart was basically one starter all season but they also have Hill and recent first round pick Matt Elam who's been terrible but it's hard to give up on a first rounder after just two seasons. I think they probably let these two guys walk.
p.s.-- I spent the summer of 1980 working as a busboy at the Sahara Tahoe. Good times.

If they trade down in the draft, Collins is a possibility.
Isn't it obvious. Milton is very skeptical, and obviously forgot how Spags led our defense to a SB win.
- there are typically safeties to be had in rounds 3-4.
why not do some research and post your findings rather than just doing the old round one debates and dichotomies.
