Spags expectations

ANGPASS : 1/18/2015 12:27 pm
Many Giants fans wanted spags as soon as the discussion of a new DC started. I am on the fence as far as excitement.

Reasons to worry:
-Best years were with us 7 years ago
-Better collections of pass rushers in 07-08 (yea i know we lost osi and stahan in 2008, but we also had the best run game in the league - notice how much that helped dallas this year)
-If beason is 100% for 16 games (huge IF) he would be the antonio pierce
-We need more than JPP. I like ayers and moore, but i think we need another big time pass rusher

Reasons to be excited:
-Better corners (can trust them on blitzes)
-we have good pass rushers but i think spags will be more creative on how to finish. (missed on a lot of opportunities that cost us last year)
-Kennard can play the role kiwi was suppose to better than kiwi (OLB/pass rusher)
-Spags is more of an aggressive DC than Fewell
- he knows how to the stop the spread offense

What are the expectations for him this year?
Top 3 in sacks?
under 300 points allowed?
top 5 in redzone D?
top 5 overall?
is top 5 asking too much?

Obviously there is some reason to worry and the be excited with everything. I just hope he can make it work for us again because everyone has him on such a high pedestal. If i missed anything let me know. i hope i missed on stuff to be excited about.
Playoffs

stats are not how he should be judged this year
robbieballs2003 : 1/18/2015 12:31 pm : link
'56 has the right idea. Does his unit give us a good chance to win, get stops when we need it and can they close out games? Things like this are much more meaningful than stats.

If Spags is such an desirable stone cold lock DC, then why didn't the Ravens promote him to DC? Or why didn't other teams pick him up as a DC?

I understand the giants organization puts "working with abd comfort with someone" as perhaps a high requirement, but it will be interesting to see if he can move the needle any when you get to the x and o's and state of talent. Sadly, I think we are just going down memory lane and really are not hitting the dependent variables that will turn this defense into a juggernaut whether it is talent, coaching or combination of both.
I'm pessimistic about the Giants these days
chris r : 1/18/2015 12:35 pm : link
but am hoping for the best, obviously.

While we have a much worse DL then he had in 07/08, we certainly have better CBs.
I want him to get more out of this group
fkap : 1/18/2015 12:36 pm : link
than Fewell did. That's what I want out of any coordinator. It's not whether he can equal his prior stats here. It's whether he can get the most out of any group of players he coaches. Evidence will be measured by Robbie's criterion, not a stat book.
The reality is if Spags loses 3 of his top 4 corners
BillT : 1/18/2015 12:37 pm : link
his MLB and his safeties are no better than last year, his defense won't look much different than Fewell's did.
playoffs is perfect expectation
dancing blue bear : 1/18/2015 12:40 pm : link
The offense should be improved by experience. I hope/ expect pugh, richberg to be stronger. Donell to improve, and cruz to come back.

If the D can play mediocre -or better- (10-15) with the ability to make plays at turning points and late in games, this team should compete for the playoffs.

This assumes a decent draft, FA, and normal (or average) injuries
All we have to do is fix the roster

The cubard is not bare
Prince- Webster
DRC-Madison
Thurman-McQuarters
Berhe-Butler
McLain- Pierce
JPP- Strahan
Moore -Osi
Hankins-Cofield
Bromley -Robbins
Kennard-Kiwi
If we get Rolle back -Wilson
Add in Wynn Ayers Holsey another guy playing in the wrong system and I see a lot of what Spags had to work with in 2007.
A lot of this is timing...
cdrusnret : 1/18/2015 1:29 pm : link
with those two bad draft results before these last two relatively good ones having a lot to do with this debate over whether or not Spags will turn this round. A third good draft in a row this year will have a great deal to do with Spags' results his first season as DC. Also, the second season of McAdoo's offense including the full recovery of Cruz, and Randle not reverting back to his lackluster performance earlier in the season, and continued top tier talent investment in that O-line will have a lot to do with whether Spags will immediately turn this around (Many more "pin their ears back and rush the passer" don't care about stopping the run scenarios in 2015 will make it look like Spags is turning it around). I see Spags being set up for success... now if Quinn can just do something special with his Specials, that doesn't include Beckham.

Lol, those are some really bad comparisons.
So please educate me

Radar? 123 Google.
Zebra, our current secondary is leaps and bounds better
David in LA : 1/18/2015 1:58 pm : link
we are featuring two first rounders in Prince and DRC. Madison was well past his peak, and Webster played very well later in the year, but he was never quite as good as either of our current starters.
Very high
TMS : 1/18/2015 2:00 pm : link
from my standpoint. Think he is what Coughlin has needed his whole time here. A stand alone inovative DC who is a student of the game and will adjust the personnel to the scheme. Noticed in the off season Spags was out visting college HCs like Urban Myer to learn about the new college offensive schemes. We looked very lost on defense too many times in the past. TC has the offense covered we needed a defensive guy. Now if we continue to draft smart maybe we can back with GB and NE where we belong.
How does a fan know?
Pink Ranger : 1/18/2015 2:05 pm : link
Which DC 'adjusts' and which DC doesn't?
I think you left off
geemanfan : 1/18/2015 2:05 pm : link
One of the most important reasons to be excited and that is on the fly and second half adjustments . Spags is very good at it and Perry was very bad.

I'd say at CB you're certainly right, but Safety right how is a huge hole, and one might argue their biggest need. If only Will Hill was right in the head... I don't know how JR will do it, but Spags deserves a huge Safety upgrade.
I would rather live and die
larryflower37 : 1/18/2015 2:07 pm : link
With pressure and spags brings that.
Take it to the offense. Sick of this defense playing safe.
As rolle says we need to bring that dog mentality and spags has in the past
Can't wait to see Spags set the edge
Zebra3 : 1/18/2015 2:11 pm : link
With Moore on one side and Kennard on the other
Blitzing either one behind JPP.
Talent vs coaching is about to be played out on Defense
First thing he needs to do is explain to the defensive ends....
Crispino : 1/18/2015 2:33 pm : link
what outside contain means. Never saw defensive ends crash down and fail to contain as much as our ends did this season. Teams got outside for long gains almost at will.
Lets see
old man : 1/18/2015 2:41 pm : link
what JR gives him to work with, AND, if the injured D players can be there day 1.
I am very optimistic on possibilities going in to FA and the draft.

Somebody needs to contain when the DEs go all out, that's for sure. JPP drove me nuts a few times... if he's gonna do that, and I'm not saying he shouldn't, there's got to be somebody who has his back on contain. Watching mobile QBs run outside unchallenged for first downs ought to be something Spags stops right away.
I agree with the bring
St. Jimmy : 1/18/2015 2:48 pm : link
pressure crowd. Give up a touchdown quick or force a punt. Don't give me what we saw in the second Dallas game. A game killing drive ending in a TD. Give me a quick stop or the ball back in Eli's hands with time left on the clock.
Expectations?

SUPER BOWL OR BUST BABY!!!!
Expectations are simple
Torrag : 1/18/2015 3:10 pm : link
An aggressive scheme. Better communication. Opposing QB's less comfortable in the pocket and with their reads. Better results.

The FO aka Reese/Ross/Sternfeld need to supply him with some personnel upgrades. There are holes to fill and decisions to make.

This. We cannot compare Spags defense now with his defense then, considering there are no players remaining from that defense.

If the defense can make key stops late in game at least half of the time and have even a modest rise in rankings (top 20), that would be a significant improvement.

Getting mkdest improvement in rankings is about all we could reasonably expect stats-wise, anyway. The guy can only coach, not play. Expectations also cannot be set, yet until we see how free agency and draft play out. We don't even know who will play either safety position or if JPP will be here.
we have shit
BigBlueCane : 1/18/2015 4:27 pm : link
at Safety which are far more important then CB's nowadays. So the secondary is probably worse.

Hopefully there will be fewer communication issues, that'd be nice.
My expectations of Spags?
Milton : 1/18/2015 6:06 pm : link
He will be competent. Given a defense like the one Fewell was supposed to start the 2014 season with, he will do a fine job. Given the defense that Fewell wound up playing the 2014 season with (i.e, 3 of his top 4 cbs on IR, his best LB on IR, and no running game from the offense) he will do no better than Fewell. He is not a defensive genius who can make the whole greater than the sum of the parts, but if the sum of the parts is large enough, the defense won't be what keeps the Giants out of the playoffs.

My expectations of the Giants? Super Bowl! But it will be because of the offense, not the defense.
As Zebra posted below talent is not far off

Add in Wynn Ayers Holsey another guy playing in the wrong system and I see a lot of what Spags had to work with in 2007.

And let's not forget in 2008, no Stray or Osi and still a top 5 finish. This current team also with the guys Reese has been stocking (with FA bargains) the last few years has a chance to have better depth. Good systems allow players to play up to their talent level.

I love Spags D because he is aggressive
ciggy : 1/18/2015 8:11 pm : link
But can we stop comparing our 2015 personnel to 2007 personnel please. First of all it is way too early to even speculate about our 2015 personnel. Second, the league is different and I'm sure Spags is different. Just one example is the read option. No one ran it in 2007. But that was one of our defenses biggest problems last year and you can bet your ass it will be a major emphasis for Spags going into this year. That may require completely different personnel, packages and philosophy from 2007.

Ps to Jolly Blue. 5 of the last six comparisons in your list between the two teams would favor the 2007 roster in a landslide. Just saying.
not much, but best he can do

The defense should be improved
fatboy : 1/18/2015 10:01 pm : link
and we're heading in the right direction. I'm not expecting the 85 Bears next year, but at least we have something to look forward to. Let's hope Eli can get number 3 within the next 3,4 years.
Doesn't need to be top 5, or even top 10
Scyber : 1/18/2015 10:05 pm : link
Just a top 15 defense would give the team a good shot at the postseason.
One thing that will help
Ira : 1/19/2015 6:50 am : link
is that Spags is much better at timing blitzes than Fewell.
