Pat Traina on why Quinn was spared

Of all the mysteries surrounding the New York Giants since their disappointing 2014 season ended, perhaps the biggest and still as of yet unsolved one is why the team retained special teams coordinator Tom Quinn.

It’s a legitimate question.... Let’s try to sort through the facts as Coughlin might have done in his evaluation.

Why NY Giants Special Teams Coach Tom Quinn Was Spared - ( New Window )
Clearly he has a lot more pictures than we thought

Have they officially announced he's coming back?
Jolly_Blue_Giant : 1/18/2015 10:32 pm : link
Quinn's specials have been perhaps a step BELOW Fewell's D...and that's quite a statement.

We need to 're-invigorate' specials too!
I think it's safe to assume that the coaching evaluations are done
BlackLight : 1/18/2015 10:54 pm : link
So if Quinn were going somewhere, we'd know about it by now.
Injuries helped him

But not poor Perry. Sorry Perry.
Tom must have another daughter...

You can put together an argument for any side of a subject
Blackbeard : 1/18/2015 11:43 pm : link
but when we see all sides of the subject we can reject the argument put forward.
BBI has for several seasons complained about the poor performance of Special Teams, and with damned good reason.
They have stunk up the stadium on a regular basis.
Quinn should have been canned long before the end of the 2014 season. Sorry, Pat, but you have soiled your copybook on this argument.
its easy

Tc thinks all his staff is good
and Mara forces OC last year
and DC this year. ST and other
positions are acceptable to
Mara but we will find that
the other position are important.
Wr..te...coaches...qb. coach

feet. Oline and dline werent
great. ..ect..As long as TC is
here dont expect change.
Just hope tc doesnt get
extension.

Ugggh. Will you please spout your idiocy elsewhere? Good lord. You're one of the worst posters in the history of this board and you clearly know next to nothing about football. It's beyond the sublime at this point.

Why do you continue posting? Seriously. I'm not being an asshole. Why? Its a complete mystery.
If you didn't see the facts as presented
BlueLou : 1/19/2015 1:09 am : link
In the article coming out, you re extremely naiive re TC's ability and thoroughness as an HC. Personally I was wondering when Zak DeOssie's slide from the best long snapper & punt cover guy at his position was gonna be noted by someone, even only by lack of support. At this point I'd guess he's overpaid relative to production. Maybe significantly so.
what. the. fuck?
B in ALB : 1/19/2015 1:34 am : link
Zack DeOssie? There is someone complaining about Zack DeOssie? Good lord.

Will it ever end? Will the stupidity ever end?
Stupidity?
BlueLou : 1/19/2015 6:24 am : link
Or maybe he wasn't very good this year? Guys decline, ya know? Nitwit.
I've never seen a punt return team call for more fair catches than
Blue21 : 1/19/2015 6:44 am : link
the Giants. Tough to return when you put your hand in the air first.
There's been a dramatic decline.
Peter in Atl : 1/19/2015 6:46 am : link
DeOssie went from being in on 10.9% of the tackles on punt coverage in 2013 down to 10.0% of the tackles in 2014.
What a waste of time
jeff57 : 1/19/2015 7:37 am : link
Quinn was never in any danger and won't be as long as Coughlin is here. Pictures, "the Irish mafia," or just plain friendship is all that matters. Quinn should have been fired four years ago.

Tom's putting his own neck in the noose...
silverfox : 1/19/2015 8:00 am : link
...with his loyalty going into next season. He's in self preservation mode, so he's willing to go down with the boat rather than rocking it. Its obvious his OC and DC changes in recent history were "suggested" to him.

I say, its about time he was put in a sink or swim situation. The franchise can't move forward in past glory, and maybe, just maybe that time has finally come. As Mara said himself...missing several years of playoffs, and two back to back years of a losing record gets most coaches fired. Sounds like the trophy case is getting a out too dusty resting on past laurels.
Am I missing..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/19/2015 8:10 am : link
these plays where DeOssie is clearly at fault?

Aren't the main complaints about return blocking and tackling? Are there a bunch of bad snaps I'm missing, especially the ones that caused all of those horrendous misses by Brown?
LOL
ZogZerg : 1/19/2015 8:16 am : link
Folks blaming Zack now?
BBI at its best.
What was the excuse for the last 4 years?
Zack had a decent year this year. Maybe it his best, but he made a number of plays.
I don't get the argument
fkap : 1/19/2015 8:32 am : link
of 'with his feet to the fire, TC is going with his handpicked assistant'. That's just a roundabout way of saying TC has faith in Quinn. The argument is whether that faith is misplaced. In his best years, Quinn is mediocre. Why would TC, being on the hotseat, put his future partially in the hands of mediocrity? That TC has faith is the end result of the argument, not the argument itself.

IMO, part of the 'will TC be retained after next year?' answer should be based on whether TC makes the right choices with his staff. IF Quinn shits the bed next year, that's a poor reflection on TC's decision making process. OTOH, Quinn could pull one of his 'good' (aka somewhat above average) years.
I recall DeOssie was criticized for a poor snap on
SwirlingEddie : 1/19/2015 9:06 am : link
the Weatherford block.

However, the question remains about Quinn and I can only conclude that Coughlin kept him for stability purposes - that having two new coordinators in a season where his ass is on the line would be too risky from a managment perspective.
Quinn still has the stink all over him
Glover : 1/19/2015 9:41 am : link
from the Meadowlands Meltdown. He should have been fired after 08. Keeping him has nothing to do with performance, all it has to do with is TC's blind loyalty. Its a joke. The guy has done a below average job with the Giants and he has nothing else on his resume, yet he keeps his job for 8 years, 5 of which they didnt make the playoffs. Special teams are something the Giants do not maximize. Its a joke. No urgency. Like they are not part of the competitive nature that is the NFL.

DeOssie was paid $975k in 2014. A long snapper with similar years of service, Clark Harris of the Bengals, was paid $990k. And DeOssie still gets downfield better than virtually all the LS's in the league. Therefore I doubt he's overpaid relative to production, and CLEARLY not significantly overpaid.

Didn't cvic say that Mara got Fewell, and TC got to keep Quinn? Wasn't that the compromise?
How is Beckham a positive?
Matt M. : 1/19/2015 11:54 am : link
I don't think he was bad, by any stretch. But, averaging 8.1 yards per punt return is not evidence of anything working well on that unit.

Ah, ok - that would make sense as there was some disconnect between the two reports.

But when specials are mostly made of what fills your roster and a large portion of your primary players aren't very good it doesn't bode well in the trickle down
Might as well keep Quinn at this point because

He is easily worth 10-15 fairly humorous threads per season.
