Is Trent Richardson a lost cause?

DanMetroMan : 1/19/2015 6:23 pm

Colts coach Chuck Pagano says Trent Richardson was inactive for the AFC Championship Game because of "personal reasons."
It appears Pagano is either buying into or going along with T-Rich's story that he missed Saturday's walk-through because of a family emergency. Either way, Sunday was Richardson's second straight healthy scratch. His time in Indy is likely at an end. Richardson's first order of business as he seeks a second chance will be shedding some weight.

Would you bring him in for a super cheap price? He looks like an uber bust but I remember many believed Mark Ingram Jr. was a total bust (granted looked better than Richardson) but this year is a pro-bowler.
1st round trade for him is

a fire able offense
Dan, you and I both know how much a pro-bowler designation means,

but point taken..Not sure he could be had super cheaply
total bust, pass

Jim Brown called it right from the moment Cleveland drafted him, that they got a first from IND for him was highway robbery.

Agreed on the pro bowl stuff BUT if in a hypothetical world the Giants signed Richardson for cheap and he were "Ingram" next year people would be mighty happy.
He failed

Seems like a maturity issue.
Let him go to NE.
Didn't his mother die?

Assuming that report was accurate it seems like a decent reason to miss a little time.
Can he still do this?

It was only 4 years ago when he juked my Rebels out of their jocks. Sick run.
Trent Richardson- Bama v. Ole Miss- 2011 run - ( New Window )
I thought he was the perfect combination
pjcas18 : 1/19/2015 6:45 pm : link
of size and speed to succeed in the NFL, he's looked terrible, bulky and slow, plodding RB who isn't even good in short yardage.

if he loses some weight and proves to be dedicated to the game I don't see harm in short-term incentive-laden deal, but he wouldn't be my plan A or anything (even plan A for a backup)
I personally thought he would be a STUD
JoeyBigBlue : 1/19/2015 7:04 pm : link
Coming out of Alabama. He looked so big, strong, fast, and elusive at Alabama. Plus he had good hands out of the backfield. He has looked anything but in the pros. Seems to be a work ethic isssue more than anything with him. I would give him a look on a non guaranteed contract.
I started a thread on this last week...

Toth029 : 1/19/2015 7:28 pm : link
He stinks. Can't break tackles. Not enough breakaway speed. Poor vision (worse than Andre Williams).
Indy's GM would have been fired long ago

if he hadn't stumbled into the 1st overall pick when Luck was coming out.

Life is so much easier in the NFL if you win the QB lottery.

would not be productive with out oline. Someone out there can probably fix Richardson and make him productive, unfortunately not us.

His rookie year he ran for 950 yards and 11 TDs.

He's already shown he can play. I think the issue with him is that he isn't putting in the work. Physically, he can do it.

I think he will at some point revive his career, similar to how Cedric Benson and Thomas Jones did. He just needs to want it.

and even he is screwing that up royally.

The only reason they even made the playoffs last 2 years is because they got to play the texans, jaguars, and titans two times each.
Ben Tate also

Barry Sanders ran behind worse O-lines than ours.

As a rookie, he did run for 950 yards and 11 tds, but he only had 3.6 yards per attempt and that was his best year.
Ron Dayne II
mrvax : 1/19/2015 8:36 pm : link
Huge bust at 3rd pick in the 2012 draft. Career average of 3.3ypc. Ran behind a great line in college like Dayne and was productive there. Meet the NFL. Meet terrible running back.

Bradshaw ran behind the same o-line as Richardson this year; check Bradshaw's numbers. Richardson was hot garbage this year, although I suppose there's still time to turn it around. Someone gave the Mark Ingram example, and I also remember Cedric Benson being complete trash before having a good year or two.
Consider the running backs used
SirYesSir : 1/19/2015 9:00 pm : link
by the other top 3 teams this year...

Blount, Lynch, and Lacy are all big strong backs, not especially fast but hard instinctive runners.

Richardson should fit right into that mold, but for whatever reason it hasn't worked and the Colts had to take him off the field.

Anything's possible, but at this point i think he's done.
He's never shown he can be anything but a backup
PatersonPlank : 1/19/2015 10:30 pm : link
He lost out in Cleveland to Tate, and in Indy to Herron. Those are not exactly Adrian Peterson type backs.
He was traded
pjcas18 : 1/19/2015 10:37 pm : link
by Cleveland before Tate even got there.

It's worse, he lost his job in Cleveland to Willis McGahee and Chris Ogbayana.
Let's be real
blueblood'11 : 1/20/2015 7:06 am : link
Some guys are great college players but aren't meant to be NFLplayers. He appears to be one of them.
His big problem is lack of AA
JonC : 1/20/2015 8:38 am : link
He frequently can't get to and through a hole, simply doesn't have the burst to get through the first level of the defense consistently.

Maturity does seem to be a question as well.
I'd sign Ingram
JonC : 1/20/2015 8:38 am : link
if his price is right.
I'd give up the 7th rounder we got from Denver for him

theres gotta b an off-the-field issue w/trent because hes got the skillset to be a great runner. just go back and look at the game his rookie year vs. the giants (where bradshaw rushed for 200 yards). t-rich was excellent. not sure whats going on w/him

Well he was also a rookie so its fair to take into consideration there might be a learning curve to adjust to. He may very well turn into a bust, but I believe its entirely up to him whether that becomes the case.
I think it's safe to say after 3 years
YAJ2112 : 1/20/2015 9:16 am : link
that he is a bust. Is it possible that he turns it around ala Benson/Jones? Sure, but that would be the surprise at this point and not him continuing to suck.
Coming out I thought he was amazing...
Amtoft : 1/20/2015 4:24 pm : link
Then being the focal point in Cleveland I thought he did very well as a rookie. Then the next year he came in way over weight. He looks so slow now it's crazy. He needs to drop 30 lbs to be affective. The question is will he put in work. He needs a big OL though to be affective also. I could see him dropping weight to get down to 220 lbs and being very good in say SF
