Ron Parker? yup, Ron Parker. He should be one of the guys at the very top of the Giants FA list.
I’m a big fan of NFL safeties with CB coverage skills/experience. When Rolle hit the free agency market I thought he should be priority #1 for the Giants. Right now, safety is a massive need for the Giants. Not only do we need 2 starters at safety but we also need depth because Q. Demps should be tossed.
I’d like to see the Giants work out a deal with Rolle. He can still play for a couple of years. What I also want to see on the 2015 Giants team is a younger version of Rolle at the other S position. I want to see another CB/S type with coverage/range/speed.
This year this type of player will be out there in free agency and he will be available at a great price.
A lot of people have mentioned Devin McCourty. What’s not to like from this Rutgers kid? He certainly would fit what the team needs but he’s going to cost big money. With all of our holes the Giants probably can’t afford that type of investment. The 2015 free agency plan should be about finding a rising young safety that isn’t as established (and costly) as McCourty. The Chiefs Ron Parker could be the guy.
The Chiefs secondary played outstanding ball in 2014. No QB went over 300 yards against them this year. They were #2 in pass D and #2 in points allowed. The most versatile player on that unit was an unknown player named Ron Parker. He played all over the place and was extremely effective.
Parker is a CB/S with elite range/speed. He just finished his best NFL season that included games where KC asked him to man up on the other teams best WRs. I saw him in the BUF game where the Chiefs were comfortable with him matching up with Watkins. The guy handled it and had a fantastic game. I was wondering where he came from and how can the Giants find one.
He was a small school player from Newberry College who despite absolutely sick measurable did not get drafted. He bounced around a couple of teams before landing in KC. Started out mostly playing CB in the NFL. In KC, he played outside CB (a lot of man coverage in KC), nickel, but also stepped in and did a great job at S after Berry went down this season. Like Rolle, he can play several positions.
''He's done so many different things for us,'' Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. ''We've asked him to play safety. We've asked him to play corner, nickel, we've had him everywhere…'' |
Parker can really run and cover(4.35 40 and 6.7 3 cone). He gives you a 3rd CB on the field when you have him at S. He can step up and mirror any NFL WR. Isn’t this what the NYG need right now?
Parker is a rising player and one of the real gems of this free agent class. He’s a young player who can help at multiple positions including one of Giants biggest needs at safety. Offers a lot of upside. He will also give his next team great value because he does not have a lot of experience at S. He will not command an enormous contract. A smart team will scoop him up at a tremendous value. The Giants should be that team.

But the contract? Very tough call. But also could be a steal if the Giants reach out early and put a nice chunk of guaranteed money on the table.
The guy I saw this year will be a quality NFL starter for the next several years.
Here's OTC's Safety contract page... where he fit in, not sure

If we retain Rolle I'm actually hoping he is the third safety. I think his best years may be behind him.
If Rolle is retained he'll want to start but lets hope a youngster comes on and challenges and overtakes him. We need some young players to really come on if we want to take a big leap in 2015.
If they are hard pressed and have key players up to go FA they may have to let him go, especially if someone is waiting in the wings.
Will take their JHouston by default.
S Chung: signed a three year contract worth $7.2 million with the New England Patriots on January 8, 2015. $2.4 million bonus.
S Delmas: signed a one year $2.25 million contract with the Miami Dolphins on March 10, 2014. Delmas has $1 million of his 2014 base salary fully guaranteed. The contract contains $1.25 million in LTBE incentives.
Both around same age as Parker. Both had a lot more NFL exp and playing time. The difference may be Parker is coming off a strong year where the other 2 were not.
For Parker? How about 4 years, 8 million, 4-5 guaranteed.
BTW, Delmas wouldn't be a bad guy to sign. Dolphins should have signed him for longer. Same mistake we made with TE Bennett.
Parker would be just what the doctor ordered.
Searcy from Buffalo is another of those under-the-radar guys who is a pretty good player. If they could get him for reasonable money, he'd be a good choice, too. But he more duplicates the Berhe skill set as a SS where Parker is more of a FS, and they really need one of the latter. So if they think Berhe can be a starter, Parker makes more sense if it has to be just one FA Safety.
Seattle can play 8 in the box because of Earl Thomas, despite his gaffe on the 2pt conversion, Ha-Ha Dix had a HUGE impact on GB's defense. McCourty holds the NE secondary together and allows Browner and Revis to man up a lot more. Deone Buccanon had an enormous impact on the Cardinals defensive secondary, and was used the same way we used Terrell Thomas last year at times and Rolle throughout his time here. A sideline to sideline hybrid CB/S who you can deploy in run support or deep patrol is almost a must now and we absolutely have to find one soon.
They asked him to a do a lot of different things and he delivered. On an NFL field he showed the AA is there. The guy has outstanding closing speed which is exactly what the Giants need more of at S.
Here he is running with Watkins:
Another nice play here:
Loved the other "nice play."
Makes me sad for Kenny Phillips. He was so football fast when his knees weren't acting up.
