NFT: Windows 8.1 Security

UConn4523 : 1/21/2015 9:57 am
I finally got a new computer, settled on the Lenovo Yoga Pro 2. Its been a while since I had to reconfigure a PC to my liking, and I have almost no experience on Windows 8 or 8.1

My question is what security settings do you guys use? It came with 3 months of McAfee which I want to uninstall. I'd like something lightweight that won't bog down the PC. AVG is what I used for windows XP back in the day but I have no idea if its still good.

Any other watchouts are set up preferences would be appreciated as well.
i love webroot

because its lightweight and not a resource hog. I couple that with malwarebytes.

Also, how do u like the 8.1? My girlfriend needs a new PC for her apartment and I'm going to build her one...She seems intrigued by 8.1 but im not sure itd make sense if you aren't going to have a touch-display machine to pair with it.
I like 8.1 a lot

still need to get acquainted with the ins and outs, but its very user friendly. I wanted a touch PC because its a feature I would use and will allow me to upgrade software 2 years down the line without having to buy another PC.

It takes getting used to like anything else, but its incredibly functional so far.

which is antivirus and antiadware. Before downloading something 3rd party I would stick with that for a while and see how you like it.
I absolutely abhor what Microsoft did with Windows 8

coupled with Malwarebytes.

What I specifically don't like about Windows 8.1 is that in order to use any of the tiled programs, you need to sign in with a Microsoft login. I have a Hotmail account that I don't use as a result of grad school switching over at some point. But, I don't want to use that as my credentials for the entire computer or the individual programs. So, I don't use any of the tiled programs and have to download any programs directly, causing duplicates of the same app/program on the machine.

How would you determine if you like a particular security package?

"Well, gee: someone just swiped my identity and wiped my hard drive. I'm going to mark this one in the "Don't Like" category."
