Walter Football Mock Draft (1/23 update)

Chris in Philly : 1/21/2015 11:26 am
Round 1:

Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami
The Giants will consider taking a left tackle with this selection. There's no telling how much longer William Beatty will be around, given his contract status (due about $19 million over the next three years). In the meantime, Ereck Flowers can start at right tackle, which would allow Justin Pugh to move inside to upgrade one of the guard spots. Flowers would then ultimate move into the blind-side spot once Beatty moves on. Check out the NFL Draft Rumor Mill, where Charlie reported a month that Flowers has received top-20 grades.

Round 2:

Tevin Coleman, RB, Indiana
I don't think the Giants will go out of their way to take a running back, but Tevin Coleman is too good to pass up. He could complement Andre Williams well, as the oft-injured Rashad Jennings can't be trusted.

Round 3:

Carl Davis, DT, Iowa
Here's some defensive line help for the Giants, who could use some long-term options in the interior to go along with Johnathan Hankins.

Round 4:

Wayne Lyons, CB, Stanford
The Giants have a couple of cornerbacks who will be heading toward free agency, so they'll need to find some depth behind Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Prince Amukamara.

Unaware of the names yet,
Big Blue '56 : 1/21/2015 11:28 am : link
but I don't recall Flowers' name mentioned all that much at #9
I like the philosophy, especially a monster OT in Rd 1.
Victor in CT : 1/21/2015 11:32 am : link
I'd be surprised if they took an RB in Rd 2 though, but the logic makes sense. I don't trust Jennings to stay healthy either. He's never appeared in all 16 games in any of his 6 years, playing in 15, 13, 0, 10, 15, 11.
Although
adcliff : 1/21/2015 11:33 am : link
Jerry Reese prefers play makers in round one, it's starting to look more likely that an offensive linesman will be selected, with Brandon Scherrf another popular pick in the mocks.
I think if the Giants are determined to go OL in the first round it may be better to trade down and get a later round one pick and a high second.
In this draft..
Chris in Philly : 1/21/2015 11:35 am : link
both Scherff and Peat were still available. Cooper was gone at 6 and the QB's went 1-2.
Pick Peat

.
I wouldn't mind that at all

Doubt Carl Davis falls to Round 3
Mike in NY : 1/21/2015 11:40 am : link
If he does I would take him in a heartbeat
Peat may be the best of the bunch
Coach Mason : 1/21/2015 11:42 am : link
When factoring polish and talent .Peat was pretty much beastly in college with a bit of an underwhelming final year. Giants from what I've noticed , tend to evaluate the whole body of work not over-emphasizing the what have you done for me lately.

I think he can eventually be a top 10 LT in the NFL cutting his teeth at RT next year which makes him worthy of 9. Collins is a little more unpolished but also has a huge upside. Clemmings may have the best AA of the bunch and amazing feet but is more raw than all of them. Flowers is interesting as well but the ceiling may not be as high as Peat and Clemmings.
My only problem with Peat
Phil in LA : 1/21/2015 11:43 am : link
is that he ends up on the ground so often.

^This. I would take Davis in round two, assuming we go OL in round one. Collins and Shelton are the two I think are most likely, but I could see the Giants taking Clemmings. He's raw, but so was JPP, and for better or worse (Robinson), Reese is a "measureables" guy. Clemmings to RT and Pugh to G.

I'd be stunned if we took Coleman in round two. Really hard to believe the Giants would think he was the BPA at that point in the draft.
If they pick a left tackle at #9
JonC : 1/21/2015 11:48 am : link
I'm good with the choice as long as it's not an OT that can't unseat Beatty ... you get a top 10 pick so rarely you must make it count, and a career RT isn't good enough. Imo.

Not bad
jeff57 : 1/21/2015 11:50 am : link

A tackle I'm warming to quickly is OT Donovan Smith from Penn State
sjnyfan : 1/21/2015 11:56 am : link
No one expected him to come out so there's very little info on him. It reminds me of the Greg Robinson situation last year but I don't think he'll go that high. However, what I've seen of him so far 9 seems less and less of a stretch. He's a RS Junior but has 31 starts at LT. He has size, length and is as strong as an ox. I've seen very little of him so far but I will be catching up. What I've seen so far I like though. He's at the Senior Bowl and I will be paying close attention.

I also don't see any way Carl Davis lasts to rd 3. Don't be surprised if by April he's in rd 1. Very underrated player right now.

Josh Shaw does this week ,he played well in the east west shirt game last Saturday and could rise up to a day 2 pick .They were saying that he may play safety in the nfl but i think all his reps have been at corner so far

I have to disagree with you on Donovan Smith. I've seen every game he has played and he's a talented kid, but extremely lazy. A lot of scouts are projecting him to kick inside at the next level as well due to body type. A good athlete but played 30 lbs overweight. Word on the street is that his act wore thin with O'Brien as well as the new coaching staff in Staste College, which is why he left early. He just doesn't seem like a Coughlin guy to me. I'd be surprised if he was drafted before the 3rd round, but could be a steal for somebody if he gets his head right.

Second this. Doesn't seem to be a Giant type especially at 9.
Collins, please.

Love his demeanor and drive to get better.
If it's goig to be an OT in round 1
Emil : 1/21/2015 12:57 pm : link
And Pete is still on the board (as he is in this draft) then you take Pete. I know Flowers has a lot of upside and a nasty streak, but much of the writers point to him being a 2nd round pick because of technique inconsistency.

That being said if Flowers develops he could be a nasty player, with a very mean and consistent run blocking ability. However, you can make the same claim about Pete as Pete's athleticism is expected to be off the charts at the combine for an OT. (I believe he was also recruited to paly power forward) He also has great feet, which you just can't coach. There may not be a "blue goose" LT in this draft, but there are a handfull of intriguing prospects with big upside. Pete and Flowers are two of them.

I like the idea of a RB in round 2-4, but I know absolutely nothing about this kid from Indiana. Anyone have insight?

Thanks, good insight. That settles it for me then. You don't draft RTs at #9. I also think that means Flowers will be there in round 2.
Carl Davis, DT, Iowa
rasbutant : 1/21/2015 1:03 pm : link
I think he goes late 1st early 2nd. this week at senior bowl will be big for him.

Has great measurable that the Giants will love.
Thanks for the heads up Lionhart
sjnyfan : 1/21/2015 1:03 pm : link
It seems like all of the physical attributes are there. He's built like a truck. I'm hoping in this case that playing under three different HC's and with a young line affected things but that he's ready to mature. One promising thing is that since the Senior Bowl started to allow RS Juniors a couple of years ago, they have a clear criteria: the player had to have a clean background, be with the same program 4 years, have their degree (Smith got his in Dec. I read) and have the blessing of the coaching staff. For Franklin to allow that sounds like a step in the right direction.

Also, even though he graduated HS in MD I believe he grew up on Long Island. That should allow the Giants to still get a free look and interview during workouts in March/April.
I think Flowers is a guy whose stock is going to rise
David in LA : 1/21/2015 1:05 pm : link

Why do you feel that way?
Really hate the idea of taking 2 offensive players in first two rounds
Tesla : 1/21/2015 1:19 pm : link
Our offense was clearly the stronger of the two units by the end of last season....our defense needs resources much more than the offense does at this point. I realize BPA, etc. but if things are close I much prefer us going defense at the top of this draft.

And if we take a RB in round 2 we better hit a home run with him.

One could argue that because the offense is stronger, that you invest to make it stronger still. One dominant side of the ball..
I don't understand the "We need to focus on D &
drkenneth : 1/21/2015 1:31 pm : link
the O is fine" crowd.

A lot has been invested in the defense (DRC, Thurmond, JPP, Hankins, Bromley, Moore), and the unit has been poorly coached. This is not to say we don't need to invest.

This offense was bottom of the barrel in 2013, and came back to life with ODB, but the OL still is average at best, and needs at least another playmaker.

It's amazing what a difference a year makes. People now think the O is set. The D is in much better shape than the O.
We really had trouble sustaining drives to give the defense
David in LA : 1/21/2015 1:36 pm : link
a proper breather. I think it's safe to say we have needs on both sides of the ball to fill.
Plenty of deficiencies remain on offense
JonC : 1/21/2015 1:39 pm : link
OL, WR, TE, RB could all use upgrades. Draft into the inherent strengths of the draft, no reaching.

Also, I think they'll spend some UFA dollars on defense, realizing needs at S, LB, and DL (and CB if they skip re-signing Thurmond, et al).

dr.k
Coach Mason : 1/21/2015 1:40 pm : link
I would tend to agree with you. Let's see what a better system can do on D with a couple FA additions. The OL can no longer be ignored.
Yup....I think it's fair to say that
drkenneth : 1/21/2015 1:42 pm : link
if this D made a couple of stops last year, we could have won a couple more games. Again: I am all for adding to the D, but you wouldn't hear me complain if the top 2 picks were both offense.

I just think this defense has enough talent currently to be at the very least competent.
No OT at #9
JerseyCityJoe : 1/21/2015 1:46 pm : link
Unless the Giants think one those guys is the next J. Ogden we must go defense. The have to give Spags some help.
SJ
Lionhart28 : 1/21/2015 1:53 pm : link
I'd take a flier on Smith if he is there in say the 6th round, because he is definitely talented. My problem is that he has gotten progressively worse each year as a starter. However, if anyone can light a fire under his ass, it's Coughlin. I'd be shocked if he was a day 1 or 2 pick though unless he shows up at the combine in incredible shape.
drk
Coach Mason : 1/21/2015 1:53 pm : link
While I was leaning towards Schwartz or Fangio, I am excited to see if Spags can recapture what he did with us a few years back. That team had an aggressive attacking demeanor and his D seemed to get better as the game went on, not worse.

This is what I am talking about: Is the defense completely void of talent?

JPP (He will be back in 2015 one way or other)
Hankins (2nd round pick, After letting LJ go)
Bromley (who you spend a 3rd on)
Moore (who made things happen when he got on field)
Kennard
DRC/Prince (Top corner duo)

Safety is a need if Rolle is let go. But to act like Spags has nothing to work with is wrong.

Again- IF there is a stud pass rusher at 9, I'm all for it.

I'd sign up for that. This is a deep WR class. Not quite last year but damn good. Dorial Green-Beckham,Rashad Green,Sammie Coates,Ty Montgomery, Lockett, Jalean Strong, Maxx Williams(TE) one of these guys will be available at 40 (while an LT would not).
LT and WR in the first two rounds of this draft?
JonC : 1/21/2015 2:25 pm : link
Sign me up.
Wouldn't be mad about Flowers
illmatic : 1/21/2015 2:29 pm : link
but I don't know if I like the idea of a RB in round 2. I just feel like the team has too many holes for that and I think Jennings/Williams can be good enough behind a better o-line. If they take a RB that high, they better be damn sure he's going to be amazing.
I think we re-sign Rolle.
drkenneth : 1/21/2015 2:31 pm : link
Try to re-sign Thurmond as well. Sign an OL & S in FA.

Go OT, WR/TE/RB (Just get Eli another weapon) first 2 rounds. Defense can have the rest of draft.

If memory serves, Reese has taken an RB before round 4 just once. And that was Wilson who he envisioned as an electric all purpose back and game-changer ala Tiki Barber. Don't see it w/Rashad and Andre on the roster already.
Coleman is the weapon....
Reb8thVA : 1/21/2015 3:01 pm : link
the Giants need in the backfield. We need to fix the running game. That means not just the OL but the RB corps as well. Jennings is a really nice RB who can't stay healthy. IMHO Williams is a very nice complimentary back but not a featured back. Coleman is the home run hitter this team needs. Maybe I'm in the minority but I take an RB over a WR there. This offense needs weapons but I think it will hum more when we have the threat of an effective running game.
Green-Beckham is so impressive on the field
Osix_ : 1/21/2015 3:10 pm : link
With his size he reminds me so much of a slightly more athletic Plax.

Cooper is just such a stud with the route running/agility, White is prob the best overall athlete with his Julio Jones-lite skillset, Parker's ball skills are sick even if his speed isn't (he kinda reminds me of Randle with better ball skills)...

But I'm starting to think that DGB has the highest ceiling of the WR group. His size advantage on DBs is a joke. And the way he moves at that size is amazing to see. He won't be a guy who makes plays everywhere on the field like ODB, he he'll be a monster downfield and redzone threat. An Alshon Jeffery/Plax type of bully at the WR position, but a better pure athlete than both those guys so he has a higher ceiling.

Wouldn't touch him at #9 considering the off the field stuff. But if he's there in the 2nd round I'd take him despite the risks(unless we went WR rd 1).

I'd also take Jalen Strong in the 2nd, I could also see him end up the best WR from this group as well. WR in rd2 seems much more appealing to me right now than WR in rd1 again.
I'd lose my shit if we had those options in 2
Andy in Halifax : 1/21/2015 3:11 pm : link

McKinney, Odighizuwa, Strong or Perryman would great picks there.
