NFT: I learned a new word today

River Mike : 1/22/2015 10:51 am
apophenia — the human tendency to see connections and patterns that are not really there. — gives rise to conspiracy theories.

We see this so often in real life and certainly here on BBI. TC or Reese, or Mara will utter some innocuous sentence and BBI is off on all sorts of interpretations, explanations and conjecture, some of which is inevitably pretty far fetched. NTTAWWT.

Its cool to know there's actually a word for it! I love this word. Definitely going to be using it ... there are so many opportunities.

Their smugness gives the other 31 teams and fans apoplexy.

also applies to visual stimuli (DaVinci and creative apophenia, for example) where the mind attempts to relate the unknown to the known, so people translate aerial phenomenon into alien spaceships....

Exactly.

Pretty much applies to everything- visual especially. It's how our brains work- we're fantastic at finding patterns.

Nah, iPhone users are just too dim to be able to figure out a more sophisticated OS.
The brand I bought is better than yours!

the mind attempts to make patterns out of information. people attempt to make sense of that information, decide to communicate a message in a certain way. the audience consumes and reacts. rinse and repeat.

but why specifically do you have aliens on the brain?
I don't care what you say,
