How did you find out your woman's ring size for the engagement ring without her knowing what you were up to?
Mine doesn't wear rings so I can't steal one of those.
Right now the only option I can think of is try to get one of her friends to sneakily get the information out of her. (hell she might not even know since she doesn't wear rings).
You could always steal a ring she already has and do a tracing.
Do you think an experienced jeweler can make a good guess on someones ring size by knowing them, or at the very least looking at their hand?
You'd think that would be a skill an experienced jeweler would have right?
You're welcome.
Yes you can contact one of her friends of possibly equal size and get a good guesstimate.
You can always get rings re-sized after purchase. Better to be close than too big or too small.
2) err on the big size instead of the small size. Then she can wear it with an extension. If it's too small from the get go, can't wear it

Bingo! Beat me to it
Essentially you're recommending that he start a process to get into an argument.
Then rest easy in that if needed anywhere you get it will resize the ring.
I just popped the question this Christmas and nailed that shit. second knuckle on my pinkie matched her ring finger. Easy peasy.
Experienced jewelers will be almost always be spot on.
And as mentioned by others, go larger, get it sized later if necessary.
Hey! Get her a bowling ball, but have it personalized for you. This way, if she turns you down, you'll have something to remember her by.
If she doesn't ever wear rings that's tougher. As many suggested I would have a sister or close friend get the info out of her.
I said fuck it and asked her.
She doesn't expect anything coming anytime soon since I'm broke and going back to school, but I've been given a diamond that has been in the family for a while, was in a ring, then put in a necklace, now all I'd have to do was have it re-set in a ring, so my question of "hey i thought of something when we were looking at rings, do you even know your ring size you dont even wear rings?"
She gave me the size she thinks she wears, so I'll maybe go a touch larger and then have it re-sized down if needed.
Get one of her girlfriends to take her out and go shopping have them both try them on just for kicks. then have her friend tell you the size.
This! Best way to go.
I said fuck it and asked her.

Heh. You asked her within the hour and a half of starting the thread? Nice work.

haha i asked her for the size, not for her hand in marriage.
Luckily for me, the last lot - a 5 carat monster valued in the six figures - didn't fit her. The only real problem was that, once she told me the one she liked best - which fit perfectly and happened to be my favorite too - I pretty much had to buy it, no matter where the bids wound up.
She had it resized, it wasn't a terrible fit, but slightly big.
Advantages of this plan:
1) You have a ring to propose with for that "pop the question" moment
2) She has a ring to wear while you shop for/buy the actual ring
3) If the ring size is a bit off, no biggie
4) Ensures that the ring she gets is one she wants and suits her style
That way, she got what she liked (and I probably paid a bit more than if I had bought it before asking her). Of course if she has you pegged as a cheapskate or a poor provider, maybe you better show her the ring up front.
But honestly, the ring doesn't have to fit perfectly up front - most jewelers will offer you at least one free resizing.
I did a 3 stone ring with ovals (one larger in the middle, with two smaller ones on the sides) before everyone had this design. My wife loved having a design nobody else really had at the time, especially since ovals were not and still aren't as popular as a few others. Plus, it was far cheaper to do this through a dealer than getting the same weights and quality retail. The ring ended up being appraised at nearly double what I paid and the quality was excellent.
I can honestly say, and my wife doesn't even peek at BBI, that getting married was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I am blessed and thankful my wife said yes.
Agree with this, I've been married 15 years and have zero complaints, one of the best decisions I've made.
