Random guy you've never seen before goes house to house offering discount work because "they're in the area". Because driving around is clearly one of the major expenses in this biz.
Obviously some people do think it's a good idea to hand out thousands of dollars for serious work on your home the same way you'd buy Girl Scout Cookies.

Also, anyone need some Girl Scout Cookies?
Do you offer special discounted rates on Thin Mints?
...we had a guy going from door to door in the neighborhood offering surgery at reduced prices (including a two-for-one special on a hip replacement) because he claimed he had leftover parts from working the graveyard shift at the Compton E.R.
Milton - I think you should report him to your local authorities, you don't want a loose cannon like that hanging out in your 'hood--your spare limbs could be next
Gary - interesting: I've been thinking of contacting locals about ours; winter is slow for paving contractors and oil prices are low
Beat me to the punch, yes it's a scam and they're more than likely travelers, they work under three to four names. if you're looking to have your driveway done look into Stasi Bros. they're reasonable and stand by their work.
Oh if the travelers come back you could always call a cop to taze them! ;-)
I have guys knocking on my door all of the time about the driveway. Usually, they are doing one in the area and then send one of the guys around knocking on door. Typically claim that they can give you a decent deal since they are already there.
To give you an answer as to whether $6k is a good price is impossible. would need to know how many square feet your driveway is. In addition, would they be going over your existing or ripping out the old one? How many inches of material would they be laying down? All factors in the final price.
So, you could be getting a good deal or getting ripped off.
hopefully not for black asphalt type sealant. That would be quite the scam. If you need the driveway tar just buy the highest quality sealant at Lowes/Home Depot get a driveway rake and reserve a couple of hours of your time on a hot day. Lay it down really thick, but not too much that it becomes sloppy looking. You can also patch broken stuff with other materials at Lowes.
If 6000 is justified you have a massive driveway that can land a small plane?
Is it odd that people didn't get that this was a joke?
I mean...the guy did show up at my door this morning, trying to convince me to hand over six large to do my driveway. Except, I have concrete driveway, which I like and is pretty decent shape and I wouldn't let these yoyos work on my house for free.
I just thought it was funny. And he totally sounded like the pikeys from Snatch. So I thought I'd share.

Almost all of them were interrupted by various new neighbors of mine asking them for quotes and other information for service at their own houses.

So they're definitely legit.
