Rumor: Beason and Kiwanuka to be cut

Vin_Cuccs : 1/24/2015 2:40 pm
Just a rumor, do not shoot the messenger.

From a source I have a good relationship with. He has been right in the past, and he has also been wrong in the past.

Recently, he nailed the Spagnuolo hire and Snee retirement.

He said the team will cut Beason and Kiwanuka to save cap space.

Again, this is just a rumor. If this has been posted, I will gladly delete.

really surprised if true and it makes sense.

made reference to the old guys on defense who need to be replaced. Those were the first two who came to my mind. Maybe Antrel, too, but we're so thin at that position we may try to retain him.
Wow

They gave beason a lot if $$$ for a couple games

Thought theyd give him 1 more chance w/mcclain as insurance.....couldve been an antonio pierce-like field general for spags. We will need a big time MLB now and i expect us to land one. Hoping for perryman

shooting allowed, even if it turns out to be wrong. Thanks for the information. Not surprising either. One is done. One can't stay healthy.
cutting

Beason is a no brainer to me. Find a MLB fix for this year and the future. He is average when he plays and he never plays. I dont even want him back on a pay cut, hit the road jack
Perryman
blapre74 : 1/24/2015 2:48 pm : link
the lb from Miami? his stock is rising, may not be available in rd 2. With all the O linemen in a bunch, the smart move would be to trade down for an exta couple of choices, since they have so many needs. Pats do it almost every year. :)
Hmmmm...
Milton : 1/24/2015 2:49 pm : link
Nobody expects them to keep Kiwanuka and Beason under their current deals, but I think it's possible that either or both are asked to accept an incentive-based paycut. Beason's could be based on games active and Kiwi's could be based on sacks and/or snaps.
not surprised

couldn't they just resign Beason

Benardrick McKinney, anyone?

These moves are no brainers, especially considering the cap relief provided.

Why even bother? It's time to move on from these often injured guys, dont even waste a roster spot on them. And he's so overrated it's not even funny. The Panthers traded him for next to nothing for a reason.
They gave him $6m
area junc : 1/24/2015 2:57 pm : link
Guaranteed. Youd think that alone would force them to give him another chance. Bad business

Possibly Beason but imo, no way Kiwi is back. Reese has been upfront about his desire to see more playing time out of Moore and he is smart enough to know Coughlin will be too loyal to Kiwi.
Don't we get a huge cap hit

Kiwanuka is all but gone
Anakim : 1/24/2015 2:59 pm : link
Beason would be a bit of a shock. I would think they would try to restructure his deal.
The
AcidTest : 1/24/2015 3:03 pm : link
problem with Beason wasn't the trade. I was opposed to it, but that was silly. It was only a seventh. The problem was with the subsequent contract.
If the Gmen are redoing Eli's contract to free up space
jvm52106 : 1/24/2015 3:04 pm : link
then it makes sense to eat up some dead money elsewhere this year and free the team of long term bad investments. Beason is a good player but will never be healthy the rest of his career. Even when he plays it isn't at 100% and the injuries he has faced all have an effect on the one part of his game that made him different (for an average to below average sized LB'er) and that is his legs and his speed.
overthecap.com
AcidTest : 1/24/2015 3:05 pm : link
says $900,000 of Beason's salary is guaranteed, and that there is $3.8M in dead money to cut him, and $3.5M in cap savings by doing so.
Depending on his health
spike : 1/24/2015 3:09 pm : link
i'd be ok with keeping beason.
They can always re-sign him after they cut him.

I know that's the general belief, but wasn't Zak DeOssie, on paper at least, a linebacker in 07 and 08? He wasn't just a long snapper from day 1.

It's 50/50. The Giants will save $3 million in space and have $3 million in dead money.

*****Interesting though - all NFL teams MUST spend 89% of their cap dollar will real money rather than "Air or dead money" which makes this offseason very interesting league wide.
I would try
pjcas18 : 1/24/2015 3:28 pm : link
and make both post-June 1 cuts.

limits the dead space (this year) to $5M combined (vs $6.4M) and cap savings of $9.8M as opposed to pre June 1 cut cap savings of $8.3M

subject to optimus confirmation..
If Kiwi doesn't get cut
Big Rick in FL : 1/24/2015 3:30 pm : link
I'd be shocked. He makes a lot of money and he sucks now.

If Beason gets cut I would be very surprised. LB would be immediately become one of if not our biggest need. Jacquian is a free agent. Herzlich and Payson Germany are ok at best. Kennard has definitely flashed, but he was hurt a lot. Who knows if we can trust him?
Kiwanuka is owed $7mil i believe
NYG4246 : 1/24/2015 3:40 pm : link
hes definately getting cut. I'm a huge Kiwi fan. Team player through and through...switched positions how many times, and never heard a word from him about it. Real force on that line when he was in his prime. 9 years playing a significant role on a D that won 2 SB's is a true accomplishment. I hope they bring him back at the vet min. If not Thank you Mathias Kiwanuka. 1st Rd pick well spent.
Kiwi cut
old man : 1/24/2015 3:42 pm : link
obvious; JB cut only if he won't redo, or as mentioned be a post June 1 cut.
We will need a DEs and LBs with or without these guys gone.

pjcas18 : 1/24/2015 3:43 pm : link
missed XLII with a broken leg, just an FYI...I don't think you said differently necessarily.

Kennard in the middle ?
Red Dog : 1/24/2015 3:51 pm : link
I note that on the Finding GIANTS tv show, one of the scouts mentioned that he felt Kennard's future was in the middle. We've also heard some other whispers to that effect along the way.

If that is the case, Beason is definitely expendible, and they won't be drafting Perryman or any other ILB in early rounds. They'll be looking for outside LBs.

And that would allow them to spend an early pick, say a 2 or a 3, on a Safety if there's one there that they like.

Yeah, he missed the latter half of 2007, but he was healthy for all of 2008, so he was with Spags at the beginning and the end of his first tenure with the Giants.

Phlegm-- I considered DeOssie, but figured since he's no longer part of the defense, he's irrelevant as far as the return of Spags is concerned.

2 points for you!

That is a very interesting proposition. I don't know if the Giants are ready to hand the defense over to Kennard, and you could argue that they might lose out on his pass rush ability; however, he has the athleticism to play sideline to sideline, and it means McClain can stay outside.

Starting trio next year...
ROLB - McClain
MLB - Kennard
LOLB - Herzlich (don't laugh, he only plays the base and is a much better LOLB than MLB. Position still needs an upgrade though.)

Yes, no disagreement, I was just mentioning the SB miss in response to the poster who said Kiwi was a part of the defense that won 2 SB's.
On second thought
Emil : 1/24/2015 4:07 pm : link
If Beason is cut and Kennard is the new MLB I could see Victor Butler making this team. Wasn't Spags the D coordinator who presided over the move of Kiwi to LOLB? If his approach is similar, I could see him wanting a pass rush specialist at LOLB to play near the line of scrimmage, stuff the run and get after the QB. Butler could be the guy.
There are obvious and necessary moves
Coach Mason : 1/24/2015 4:09 pm : link
We need to start purging the extremely injury prone from the roster. Beason just can't stay healthy and his cap hit is big. Love his fit and impact for our D but if you can't get on the field it doesn't do much for the team.

As for Kiwi he has quite a bit of wear and tear at this point and doesn't seem to be an impactfull pass rusher anymore.

These moves along with extending Eli will give us the necessary cap space for JPP and a few more decent imports from FA.

Depending on FA, I could see a round 2-4 LB brought in if the value is there: Perryman, Stephone Anthony, Paul Dawson as examples.

I just don't see how we go Her zilch again.
Emil Keep in mind
pjcas18 : 1/24/2015 4:16 pm : link
Kiwi struggled in 2007 when he played LB. Torbor was far better - once Kiwi was injured.

and in 2008 when he came back he was a DE and stayed there until JPP was drafted and then he played "the joker" splitting time between LB and DE.

He was always a liability in coverage and I would not call it a successful experiment. I think it was done more out of necessity do to holes at LB and "to get the best players on the field".

I hope they don't start out as plan A with putting a player in an unfamiliar position and hoping it works.

Fellas, there's one certainty, so accept it:
Big Blue '56 : 1/24/2015 4:19 pm : link
Herz will be here as long as TC is here, mostly for his ST's play and as depth at LB..He actually was rather decent for us at LB as the season wound down, imo

If Herzlich stays, it means Giants have done a thing in FA or the draft to improve the LB corps. Would be a crime. The guy is terrible, an average back up at best.

Maybe it was wishful thinking, but I saw a lot of positive from Herzlich the 2nd half of the season in his limited snaps.

He made some plays in the run game.

I have no issue with him on the roster, as long as he's the last guy active on game day kind of player, not in the top 22 or rotational backup guy.

If pressed into action for a run play or 2, I don't think you're exposed, but when he is forced into extended action, teams can take advantage of him - especially in coverage.

I think he's done, and dunking Reese in the Ice Bucket Challenge probably made his year.He can now retire peacefully.

Beason I'm a little surprised at,1 and done after signing a new contract is ruthless, but that's not it.Surprised because of the money and the other options on the team. There are none, and I don't think Reese can be relied upon to find a linebacker.

june 1 cuts
Chip : 1/24/2015 4:35 pm : link
You can only do one june 1 cut and Kiwi has the bigger contract and the greater the savings in year one and 1/2 would be used as dead money in 2016. Since we are close to 100 million under the cap in 2016 might as well use it. I hope they are working on Eli or is Jerry going to let him test free agency.
Good moves
TMS : 1/24/2015 4:36 pm : link
especially with Beason. Now somebody explain how he got such a big contract in the first place with all these injury problems. Was it a charity hire or what ? Another GM f//k up in my mind. We should have kept Joseph not this guy.

I read this the same way. According to Over the Cap, it won't matter if Kiwi is a pre- or post- June 1 cut, the savings will be the same.

You are right and might as well use both with the 2016 season in limbo.
Williams, Herzlich, and Paysinger are all UFAs.
Klaatu : 1/24/2015 4:58 pm : link
I'd try and re-sign Williams if the price is right.

I would not re-sign Herzlich, and instead make an offer to Andrew Gachkar (SD). He can do everything Herzlich can - core special-teamer, spot starter - but a little bit better, and he's two years younger. Akeem Dent (HOU) would be my second choice.

I wouldn't re-sign Paysinger, either. I'd make an offer to Chris White (NE) or Larry Dean (BUF).

As for the draft, I still don't see the Giants using a premium pick on a linebacker. I figure they'll do what they usually do and look for LBs in the mid-to-late rounds.
