Bleacher Report

Opinions are all over the place here. Feels like a Giants pick to me. (And I am not saying I would/he will be).

Is he in the mix at #9? - ( New Window )
I like him a lot
Giants2012 : 1/25/2015 6:39 pm : link
Reminds me of DJ Flunker. Of course, Flunker went later in the first.
For the Giants, he can start at left guard immediately
Ira : 1/25/2015 6:40 pm : link
and move to tackle as needed like Dave Diehl did.
As it stands right now for me...

If we can assume Gregory and Ray are gone, the guys I like the most are Scherff and La'El Collins. And since there is good chance that Scherff is also gone by the time the Giants are on the clock, Collins is my choice among the likely available. But that could easily change between now and May, because it's not as if I'm crazy about him.

As far as the OL go, Clemmings and Peat are the more athletic prospects with higher ceilings, but Scherff and Collins are the safer choices, and not just safer, but more physical. And physicality is something our OL needs to improve upon.

It's Fluker, not Flunker, and he didn't go all that much later at pick #11.
Boylhart had this to say....

La'el is an aggressive, athletic offensive lineman who can play more than one position at a high level on your offensive line. He shows on film solid lateral agility to mirror his opponent and has the quick feet to go out to the second level to make his blocks. He also has the athleticism to get out in front for sweeps and screen plays. He is a dominant pulling offensive lineman and plays with the pride and leadership needed to be a starting player the day after you draft him.
the #1 trait

our OL has been lacking is toughness. Even at our very best with the '08 OL, we won with agility and timing rather than straight up power. I want a big bad mofo on the OL who can overpower DLinemen in the run game.

I like Peat more than Collins just because he fits the "Blue Goose" description better. Peat seems like a better pure OT prospect.

But Peat doesn't seem to have that "nasty" to him and it's making me like him less and less as a prospect the more time goes on. Collins isn't some 330lb mammoth, but he definitely brings the nasty in the run game. It's making me reconsider how I've ranked the top OL prospects.
No

problem at all with Collins at 9. Our run game was horrible last year. He mauls people, and could probably play right, and maybe left tackle. We won a SB with Diehl at LT. Collins is at least as good, and would be a big boon to Beatty at LT. Peat is more agile to be sure, but Collins is more of a power player.

Out of all the 1st round OL possibilities, Peat by far intrigues me the most.

Thanks for the correction yet no opinion on the content. Keep up the great work :)

Sorry, I thought it was already clear by my earlier comment that I agreed with you.
Like him and Scherff
jeff57 : 1/25/2015 7:49 pm : link
Scherff is a little better run blocker, Collins a little better pass blocker. Most seem to like Scherff better.
Interest point in the article
jeff57 : 1/25/2015 7:53 pm : link
That OL are among the safest picks and quick to start.

Ok,my bad. I apologize :)
I'd be happy with him at #9.

Let him start at guard, and if he can eventually make the move to LT, great! If not, I'm willing to settle for a dominating guard. It'll be a better return than the Giants have gotten on some high picks. And I remember fondly what Ron Stone used to mean to the running game.
I really don't want to take a guy who projects to guard
chris r : 1/25/2015 8:30 pm : link
at 9. It's a risky pick at non-premium position. Sounds like lose lose to me.

Hopefully the Giants will have picked up a starting RT or guard in FA so OL won't be a need pick.
I see Collins more at LT and Scherff @ guard
#10* : 1/25/2015 9:12 pm : link
but I wouldn't bet #9 on that. I think a trade down would be best to select either him or Flowers. But looking at clips he was my favorite to watch. Just wish I could get more Peat footage.
I'm not a big fan of Collins, at least for our system. I think he's
yatqb : 1/25/2015 9:17 pm : link
too slow-footed for LT and too clumsy moving in space for the type of pulling and trapping that we do. He seems like more of a zone-blocking fit, which we do at times but not primarily, at least from my observation.
I would be very happy IF Collins
Jay on the Island : 1/26/2015 10:49 am : link
were the pick at #9. He is exactly the type of player the OL desperately needs. As Eric has said numerous times the OL has become too finesse. We need a guy who plays with a mean streak.
I agree with Mayock
JonC : 1/26/2015 10:52 am : link
he looks like a RT to me, and #9 is too early for him.

They might not have been "nasty" like Suh, but Snee/McKenzie had plenty of power in their primes.
