are even close to as-bad as crap like snowmaggedon or snowpocalypse or any of that garbage when DC gets hit with a snow storm.

you're sick of stock snow storm images (like salt trucks, LOL) which are going nowhere for this or any storm.

Why do so many people need to buy them every year? It is not a consumable item and can be used for more than one season... What am I missing here?

I spent a semester in DC when I was in college (Spring 2000). They shut down the federal government with less than 1/8" on the ground in a "storm" that ended up dumping less than 1/4" in the city. The last remaining superpower was hobbled by an amount of snow that wouldnt have kept us inside during lunch/recess growing up in NYC.

Well...I will say that the "snowmaggedon" of 2010 was pretty bad even by NY'ers' standards.
