Football Insiders breaks down La'el Collins.

Klaatu : 1/26/2015 10:43 am

One of the top prospects in the 2015 NFL Draft who hopes to fill that scarcity of quality offensive tackles in the NFL is LSU offensive tackle La’el Collins who just won the coveted SEC Jacobs Blocking trophy for being the best offensive lineman in the SEC. Collins is a massive man as he is listed at 6-foot-5 and 321 pounds with what appears to be long arms...

Sy56 likes him alot too. He looks like a beast.

I like that he has a nasty streak too.
Like
AcidTest : 1/26/2015 11:07 am : link
him a lot. Massive mauler, who can also at least play RT. Would really help Beatty at LG. Lunges too much, and may not be able to play LT, but no player is perfect, even at #9. No problem with the pick, but I think he's gone before we choose, possibly to the Redskins.
How the heck do you pronounce his first name?

At that size, it's Mr. Collins unless he says otherwise :-)
A lot of experts are saying
Lionhart28 : 1/26/2015 11:31 am : link
that he is a RT/OG. #9 is really high for a guy like that unless you think he's a pro bowl caliber guy.
you dont
area junc : 1/26/2015 11:33 am : link
take a guy like Collins #9 overall. c'mon now

Why not?
because there's likely to be better players there
JonC : 1/26/2015 11:50 am : link
.
I think there will be so much movement
blueblood : 1/26/2015 11:55 am : link
over the next few weeks it wont even matter where guys are ranked right now.
This description fits pretty nicely with what the Giants might want
ij_reilly : 1/26/2015 11:55 am : link
From the article:
"Collins would best be served as a right tackle initially as he cleans up some of his flaws in year one; before he is moved over to the left tackle position in year two or three just like the Dallas Cowboys did with Tyron Smith."

So, Pugh goes to guard, per BBI's demand; Collins at RT. Then he replaces Beatty.

I dunno, is #9 too high a pick for a left tackle?

Are there? I don't know, but if the Giants believe that Collins has what it takes to play LT, then they'd be fools not to take him there if he's still on the board. Ditto for Peat or Scherff.
Another issue that we never seem to get as fans
blueblood : 1/26/2015 11:57 am : link
Its not where WE think people are or should be ranked.. Its where the GIANTS have people ranked.
The LT projection isn't consistent
JonC : 1/26/2015 11:58 am : link
Some think he can, some think there's no chance. It's part of the evaluation process. A LT at #9 of this draft is good value, I just don't think he's a LT in the NFL.
K
JonC : 1/26/2015 11:59 am : link
I'd pick Peat and run. I like Scherff better than Collins but he also looks like a RT to me.

Chances are NYG will value a DE or WR ahead of a RT, thus my comments.
It is not too high if your scouting department is convinced
Bob in Newburgh : 1/26/2015 12:00 pm : link
that he has the athletic ability to start at LT after starting elsewhere on the oline for his 1st 2 years.

If RT is his ceiling, year #9 is a bit high.

LT or WR for me in the 1st round.
DE is a need as well
blueblood : 1/26/2015 12:14 pm : link
they need to improve the pass rush..
I agree, blueblood.
Klaatu : 1/26/2015 12:21 pm : link
I'm just not crazy about any of the DE prospects at #9 not named Randy Gregory.
If they deem a LT or WR or DE worthy at #9
JonC : 1/26/2015 12:28 pm : link
I'm pretty confident in their choice.
unless it's a tweener DE
JonC : 1/26/2015 12:29 pm : link
that's the one identifier I would be wary of.

I'd say he's a very good rt/og who can initially back up lt and in a year or two move to lt. I'd be comfortable if we take him at 9.
Gregory really looks like 3-4 OLB to me
JonC : 1/26/2015 12:43 pm : link
and I really liked him as a prospect, he's just so slim, plays with no lead in his arse at POA, doesn't shed blocks well, etc.
All right, and now ...
ij_reilly : 1/26/2015 1:10 pm : link
Can someone tell me how the heck to pronounce that first name "La'el"??
With Maras comments
Coach Mason : 1/26/2015 1:36 pm : link
If Peat or Collins project well to LT , one will likely be the pick at 9.

It's like it's spelled as far as I understand it. LA EL
Not too high IF
Red Dog : 1/26/2015 2:09 pm : link
If he's going to hold down a starting spot on the line for a decade, be a team leader, and go to some pro bowls along the way, #9 isn't too high for a guy like him at RT or G.

I remember when the Raiders took a punter in the first round - something that everybody said was batshit crazy - and that worked out pretty well.
He will be in my top 3 OL overall
Sy'56 : 1/26/2015 2:34 pm : link
And has a good shot at finishing in the top 10 overall.

Collins does everything you want out of a RT and/or G, and I think he can play LT in a year or two as well. I think he can be a Pro Bowl type no matter where he plays. With the gray areas along the NYG OL, he would be a welcomed addition. There are couple things I would want to see cleaned up before putting him on the left side, but he can do it. Very confident in him.

agree 100% with Klaatu here.
from that review and Sy's post
giants#1 : 1/26/2015 2:41 pm : link
sounds like he'd almost be an ideal pick for the Giants (if no big time defensive playmakers are available).

He'd be a Day 1 starter at LG (or RT if they opt to move Pugh) and could take over for Beatty in 2016/2017.

Really Liking him and Peat. I think Collins has the higher overall upside of the two but I question his ability to play LT a little more.

mentioned so far in our draft discussions.I,ve been rooting for receivers the last couple of years, but this is the year for the OT. Collins sounds good.
